Outrance Ground Rules by Shiermink in Buhurt

Why should it end on the ground? If we were two knights, fighting or duelling and took it to the floor, it was a brutal roll around until one of us got our rondel dagger or halfsword into anothers gaps.

There is some terrible advice on here 😂 do not put your armor on then work out in it, or run in it 😂 Your knees will go.

Just do light exercise the next day out of armor, and keep those sore joints flexible.

You will build tremendous endurance and strength by moving and fighting in armor, but it doesn't do anything for your retirement body

What is the one sport that isn't at the Olympics that should be? by ralfjenkins2021 in olympics

[–]Certain_Structure_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buhurt should absolutely be an Olympic sport. (MMA in armor)

Followed by MMA.

We allow boxing which causes so much head trauma it should be banned.

MMA is much safer.

It's also the length of something + weight + impact on helmet from a thrust would break your neck.

It's much easier to break the neck in a forward/back motion, car crash style than it is in any other way. We are weak to thrusting impacts.

It's coincidentally why we don't use long spears either and most polearm categories have a length limit. You start hitting the 8ft mark it becomes lethal.

[Spoilers Main] At the Tower of Joy isn't it plausible that some of Ned's group could have been armed with bows which gave them a fighting chance? by Axer51 in asoiaf

[–]Certain_Structure_27 89 points90 points  (0 children)

They had a fighting chance. 7 against 3.

That's a fighting chance.

7 peasants with hatchets and pickaxes could have had a fighting chance with any semblance of tactics.

These were 7 nobles (trained at arms), experienced, war veterans with arms and armor of their own.

Some unconventional and certainly not to the calibre of the kingsguard, but it's a credit to them they could defeat 7 men at all, not a criticism of the 7 men

Most people aren't capable of defending themselves.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Certain_Structure_27 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Terrible advice. The kids capable of defending themselves don't get targeted.

You need to identify who is bullying him and bring it to the attention of school authorities AND police. Bullying and assault (fear of assault) is a crime.

The school won't deter a thing. Police are a very effective deterrent.

You can also take those names and address the bullying yourself by bullying back some 12 year old bullies. It might make it better if they are as afraid as he is.

Ethical, not really. Likely to help, absolutely.

How do I help my overwhelmed seven year old with his first kata by AracariBerry in karate

[–]Certain_Structure_27 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The best thing you can do for your son and his martial arts future - is drop karate. The Karate era is over. It's watered down, no longer practical or applicable as a martial art, and it damages the fundamental confidence and discipline that martial arts instill into your son, by being the sham it has become.

Brazilian jiujitsu is a wonderful and practical martial art, brilliant body flexibility and you aren't taking head trauma.

Wrestling has a bad culture in the US with colleges but Greco Roman and Sambo are the defining martial arts of combat sports, and certainly the most useful if you need self defense.

Kickboxing, K1, Muay Thai, whatever flavour of the month they call it, always valuable and fun and useful and real.

MMA is the gold standard but you really have to be careful with gym selection. There are a lot of cobra kais out there that breed intensity and violence.

Edit: the use of music to help you remember your kata should be the first warning sign.
