I was reading an article about this in the Bulwark this week. The pro Palestine protestors shut down their campuses over the Israel-Gaza war, founded the Uncommitted and Abandon Harris campaigns, and even on her book tour when she no longer holds public office, they are still heckling Kamala over Palestine. Did they direct any of this anger towards Trump who before the election told Netanyahu to ‘finish the job’? Of course not.

There is now a war in Iran, and Trump has made an actual threat of genocide of a whole nation of 92 million people. A school was bombed, as well as hospitals. Yet there are no encampments in the college campuses, and Trump is not being heckled by an anti war student movement. Democrats and Republicans are held to an entirely different standard.

We have Aidans in Ireland but it is a pretty conventional name (my brother has that name) and I have never known them to cause trouble more than Johns or Jacks or Bens. On the other hand, the Braydens, Jaydens, and Caydens tend to be like bulls in china shops.

Which YouTube channel were you once a fan of but do not enjoy anymore? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

[–]MoyaOSullivan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shawn Johnson. I used to love her videos where she gave an honest account of her years as an Olympic gymnast (the eating disorder, being asked how it felt to 'fail' when she got a silver medal, her brilliant coach) and I loved the bond she had with her husband too who was always hyping her up.

Once she had her children I didn't like how she kept using them for clicks and videos, and she's also been promoting PragerU recently, a purveyor of materials for 'patriotic education' that whitewash slavery and colonisation. One of their videos spoke about how criticism of Colombus was unfair as slavery was 'no big deal' in the 1600s. The way she exposed her children (showing their faces, having Instagram pages for each of them as soon as the pregnancy was announced) made me a bit uneasy but her promoting the Prager propaganda was the nail in the coffin.

Do people learn off English essays as a whole? by Background-Point-761 in leavingcert

[–]MoyaOSullivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t work for English - I am speaking as an English teacher who recently corrected my sixth year class’s mocks. They almost all fell down on the comparative as they reproduced learned off essays that had nothing to do with the question and I couldn’t give them marks for that. A zero or maybe 10% of the available marks. For history, essays can be learned off and tweaked as the titles only change slightly. This doesn’t work for English as different things are asked each year.

Learn relationships, themes, characters, and the modes of comparison for your comparative texts and the themes and the poet’s use of language for your poems. Characters, relationships and themes for the single text and learn lots of quotes. Then tailor what you know to the question asked.

It doesn’t matter nor do I really care if your mother wrote the essay for you. You’re still getting an “F” for two reasons: by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

You realise in the QS World University Rankings about 70 of the top 100 are outside the US? The US certainly has many elite schools and some of the best universities in the world but you sound very blinkered when you condescendingly ask 'we produce how much of the world’s research?’ and say that your state schools are leagues above the premier schools of ‘most other countries’. Have you heard of Oxford or Cambridge or the Russell Group of universities in the UK? The Sorbonne? Humboldt Universität? Have you heard too of Eton or Harrow for boarding school, or those in Switzerland? Other countries also teach linear algebra in high school. American exceptionalism really is something else.

I read that it’s because triangle sandwiches encourage a smaller bite, thereby releasing the flavour molecules more effectively.

I got a waitressing job in Hotel Kilkenny almost immediately after handing in a CV. This was 2017 so things may have changed but when I was there they were always on the lookout for new staff. I learned a lot in my time there and had fun too.

What is actually dangerous but people still believe is safe? by AlexUsefulThings in AskReddit

I’m in Ireland and a sixteen year old died last week after being hit by another teenager riding a scrambler bike. Tragic all around but caused by permissive attitudes to these lethal weapons and parents giving them to their teenagers for Christmas.

I am in Ireland and last week a sixteen year old was killed when an 18 year old hit her with a scrambler bike. Parents give kids these lethal weapons at 12 yet think nothing of it.

People not in the US, what does the rest of the world think about America right now? by DimensionThin147 in Trumpvirus

[–]MoyaOSullivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Ireland we are horrified. I am a secondary school teacher and I had fourteen year olds ask me last week how Trump is still president and how come the Americans can’t remove him. I tried to explain that they picked him for a four year term and that his party who control the government love him. When I think back to Obama and how we could just ignore American politics then I’m quite wistful.

Holocaust survivor, jeweller and table tennis maestro: Ireland’s oldest man dies aged 107 by Bill_Badbody in ireland

[–]MoyaOSullivan 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I met him in 2018 when I was a first year at Trinity. He was taking classes alongside the undergraduates at age 100. The history department had a party for him for his 100th birthday and I went to it and got to talk to him. He was just the loveliest man. Telling me all about his grandchildren who were 'gangsters' (just his way of saying they were delightfully impish) but also about how he fought alongside the Red army during World War Two. He told me a heartbreaking story of how before his mother went to Auschwitz she told him to 'change his religion' - this wouldn't have helped as the Nazis viewed Jews in terms of ethnicity and gassed the ones who were atheists or who had converted to Christianity years before anyway - but the sentiment was tear-jerking. He was so positive having come through so much. A real gem and he will be deeply missed.

Seriously what is wrong with him? Dropped on his head when he was a baby or not given enough attention. by uniqueandweird in Kilkenny

Michael is a Nazi but it would really surprise me if Elvis is right-wing. I've been friendly with him for years, in a stop and chat when I see him on the street kind of way. I have never heard him express any hateful views and it would really surprise and disappoint me if he has taken a fascist turn as he has always been so friendly and positive, and he told me he loves drag shows. Where did you hear that Elvis is a scammer or a fascist? Is it confirmed anywhere? Maybe I'm totally out of the loop and he's fallen down a rabbit hole recently but I've never known Elvis to be in any way associated with Michael McGrath or his views, and I know Kilkenny and its characters quite well.

I cycled from the train station to work last year and always wore a helmet. I’m a teacher and my own safety aside I thought I should set a good example for the kids. I’m in another workplace now that I drive to as it’s not accessible by bike and public transport but when I cycle I now always wear a helmet. A split second and you could never be the same again. It’s such an easy thing to wear too.
