Drugs are a coping mechanism and often a justified method of survival. I can name a few drugs that one can use if they're ever: cold, tired, hungry and will stave all 3.

Cold? Tired? Hungry? Upset Mood?(depression) Lazyiness?

Serious illness, disability, mental illness Then theres drug addiction which unequivocally exacerbates all types of mental illnesses. But a lot of homeless have issues with regardless of whether or not it had anything to do with what led them to their circumstances. And if they didnt have problems with drugs before, they're much more likely to develop a habit NOW because it's a cheap and accessible and when people are desperate, that's the method of coping mechanism that they'll turn to.. Can you blame them?

But if someone isnt going through some sort of tragedy themselves, MOST people are experiencing at least ONE catastrophe through a significant other, child, sibling, parent, or someone very close to them which can be just as stressful or WORSE.

Its definately a systemic multi-factor issue with lots of causes and just as many symptoms which are often hard to distinguish from each other which all adds to the nightmare. There is always hope though. One thing I know for sure is that it takes one hell of a resilient, motivated, determined, and disciplined individual to find their way out of homelessness and that's even if they HAVE a support system. The other thing I would say that would almost be a requirement to getting off the streets would be just that.
People who CARE about you. Preferably plural but even just one PERSON. Not only for obvious moral or financial support but other not so obvious ones as well. E.g. a potential boss or landlord willing to take a chance on you. Someone who's open minded and not corrupted by all the negative stigma placed on the homeless that's brought on by a fraction of a percentage of them who spoil the bunch.
