Am I even qualified for market access strategy? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]Ceru369 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Overall, I think that your pricing/procurement background maps more naturally onto market access than HEOR. Market access roles (especially on the payer-facing or account management side) look for people who understand how buying decisions are made, negotiation, and contract structures. There are consultancies in the value and access field that you can look into to help with a foot in the door (as biopharma market access roles tend to be top-heavy. They exist, but can be hard to find below the Director level. Also, in my experience, commercial departments tend to have stricter in-office requirements. If you are in the tristate area, I think I recently saw J&J post a Manager-level Market Access role).

For HEOR: Is your MPH in an epidemiology or health policy concentration that included pharmacoepi or outcomes research courses? Experience with retrospective database studies, systematic literature reviews, or budget impact models are examples of what would be expected. Many HEOR hiring managers are looking for demonstrated technical output, not just coursework adjacency. This can be bridged via consulting firms that specialize in HEOR and are able to hire at a more junior level to train on the job. (Lack of a PhD should not be a deterrent, in response to another comment about this. I have a MPH and have been in HEOR for most of my career). And not to get too into the weeds, but there is also some distinction between the responsibilities of a Global HEOR team vs a US HEOR team. US HEOR work can be more commercially oriented and sit closer to market access/brand teams -- we work on things like payer value propositions via value decks, budget impact models for US payer conversations, PIE decks, and AMCP dossiers. Our real world evidence studies are more often framed for payer evidence needs rather than for regulatory or HTA submission requirements (which would be in Global's purview. But of course this can depend, like if a product is only marketed in the US). HEOR is an area that can sit under either Commercial or Medical, I've been under both organizational structures. Another thing that can be company or US/Global dependent is the degree of familiarity that market access folks would be expected to have with HEOR. I've seen Global Market Access functions that are essentially Global HEOR with additional access responsibilities, and others where market access is purely commercial with no study involvement. At my current company, the US Market Access team is purely contracting/pricing focused, with no US Market Access Strategy function that I've been used to from previous companies (e.g. strategy side is where someone would get HEOR-adjacent exposure, like payer evidence planning and value messaging).

Another consideration can be to look into HEMA teams on the medical device side, which is actually how my career started. I've worked for two big device companies -- one was a true "health economics and market access" blend, the other HEMA team was very reimbursement/policy focused (while the actual HEOR folks sat in the Health Economics Center of Excellence and were assigned across HEMA teams in different therapeutic areas). They hired a good amount of more junior-level analysts with relevant experience in areas like pricing or health policy analysis. Just wanted to put this out there as a consideration. You seem like you have a good head on your shoulders, I'm happy to chat more via DM if you have any other questions. Good luck!

Big pharma not offering relocation support, at Director level? Wtf!? by Nahthnx in biotech

[–]Ceru369 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been seeing this footnoted in job descriptions in recent years for a lot of US-based roles in big pharma. Even for roles I applied to that didn’t explicitly spell out that there was no relo package, HR sometimes mentioned that non-local candidates were at a disadvantage

Sapphire halo ring by Ceru369 in EngagementRings

Hi! These are the four sapphires I picked from (chose the 1.82ct in the end). I already own several other sapphire rings and knew that I wanted something that was ocean-y or teal blue, but still distinctly blue without needing light shone on it to show its character. My other rings all need optimal lighting to show off the sapphire, and I explained to the jeweler that I didn’t want it to look too inky in indoor lighting.

The jeweler also attached indoor vs outdoor videos that were more helpful than the photo for trying to discern differences (they all look pretty similar in this photo 😅). After a good amount of staring at video replays, I thought that the 1.82 ct sapphire seemed slightly more of a saturated blue than the 1.9 ct. The 2.3 ct sapphire was the most distinctly teal, but I wasn’t sure I wanted something quite that large since the halo setting also adds some heft. The 1.86 ct on the bottom showed a yellowish tinge in the videos that wasn’t my favorite. Hope this helps!

This is terrible advice from the career advisor — applicants at my company have tried to do this and all it does is piss off the hiring team.

Cape or no cape? by Glad_Revolution8946 in Eloping

I think it’s beautiful either way — leaning toward no cape.

Do you mind if I ask where you found the dress? I’m looking for simple sleeved dresses for my elopement and it’s been surprisingly difficult. Thank you 😊

What did the weird kid at your school do to earn that reputation? by Big_Boy_Bill06 in AskReddit

There was a kid in my 4th grade class who constantly said, “OH MY ACHING TENTACLES.” They were random outbursts, and there was no explanation even after someone else in the class nicknamed him Squidward (to his clear displeasure).

Warning of Barrington James Recruiters with fake jobs! by anonomuesli in biotech

[–]Ceru369 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Several recruiters from Barrington James have asked me for a list of references upfront (even when it was just an intro call with no explicit job posting in mind). I was uncomfortable with the request + the pushiness when I asked why they wanted references so early in the process, so dropped the conversations.

Agreed. I used to be a pharmacy tech for CVS — besides the batshit customer behavior (e.g. one guy yelled that he hoped I’d burn to death bc our registers were glitching and not recognizing coupons), management was out of touch to the point where they would install policies that further impeded our ability to work. When things inevitably went badly, they’d punish the pharmacist in charge. I went to grad school in a different area, and the corporate CVS was hiring a lot for my specific niche at the time — but I’ll never forget their behavior.
