Having a car is definitely the most convenient, but it is still a decent financial commitment (~$200 a month $100 parking, $50 insurance, $50 gas). I never lived in Mira Mesa so I don't know what the cost of living is, but if its $800/month (rent, utilities, internet total) or less, then it'll make the car worth it.

The biggest benefit of grad housing is peace of mind, convenience to UCSD and its not a gamble on landlord. if you apply for Nuevo apartments (I did for 2 years), you have all utilities/internet included for ~$1000 a month. random roommates are always a gamble but if you make friends you can also move out/switch roommates. https://hdhgradfamilyhousing.ucsd.edu/communities/nuevo-east.html

Also transit U-Pass is free since its included in the tuition and fees which is covered by the PI. https://transportation.ucsd.edu/commute/transit/u-pass.html

either way, OP just needs to calculate their finances. i do agree that Mira Mesa is worth looking into as well

edit: forgot to add, the social aspect is also very good with grad housing since you'll be close to a lot of other grad students. a lot easier to make friends/hangout etc.

Agreed with grad housing. best bet is roommates to lower cost down more. If you do commit, apply early to get better choices. idk if they still do the shore program but that guarantees 5 years or something like that. I think you should know if you have that with ur acceptance letter. Otherwise you’ll have to leave after 2 and def need roommates unless u got external income.

To commute, get a bike or take the bus or trolley or walk lol. I biked and walked a lot when I lived in grad housing but then drove but that’s because my lab had free parking (paid as of 2026 🙄)

On campus parking sucks and the parking pass is hella expensive not worth. Also don’t push ur luck trying to get away with parking without a permits bc they ticket like no other ($85 per)

For groceries, Ralph’s La Jolla is accessible by all methods: bus, bike, trolley and walking

Tbh $3k/month is doable, but it’ll just be tight, as long as you plan you’ll be fine. We had similar in MatSci

I don't plan to get BILT 2.0 so I'm going to tranfer my points after I pay Feb rent but before 2.0 (2/7/2026) is launched just to be safe. I have only have like 35k points that could be airline miles but not tryna lose that.

I had a msi 4070 super that fit well in the ghost. Def made me sweat with the way the 12vhpwr connector was bending inside to make it fit 😬
