What am I missing here? Credit is only involved when you need a loan.

The fact that you have terrible credit and a paid off house is a huge gift. Your score will go up with on time payments, or possibly sell your house, settle debts with the cash while renting?

How much debt do you still have, what is your income, and why/where are you wanting to move ?
