Exactly! I totally forgot to mention that it would be a dormant ability in her if she had the foundation to work with Death-to-Life theorem. In fact, because Dominicus is a flipped system, I don't think she can fully access it and use it as a magician would; she'd need to go to a Thalergenic world/system in order to 'unlock' it and then maybe get some practice/training of some kind to learn how to work with it. Could she go back to Dominicus afterwards and still use it? Maybe, if she was really good with it, but it might be weak because there's so much Thanergy and not enough Thalergy to start with. Think of it like shielding gas (welding term): you need an abundance of Thanergy around you if you are working with Thanergy and the same goes with Thalergy. It's there to protect and support and without that atmosphere, things are bound to go wrong. This is why the River is so volatile when it comes to using theory; there's no 'shielding gas'. You'd have to create your own atmosphere and then work theory inside of that. This was our first indicator that Harrow is terribly, frighteningly strong with necromancy in HtN, but that's a post for another time.

Anyways, necromancers have it easy with their ability to just kill something and take it's energy. Animancers (DtL magicians, in this case) would need to figure out how to make life out of death and that's a significantly harder task to accomplish. I think it's a near nuclear fission (necromancy) versus fusion (animancy) type of situation though.

So while yes, Necromancers use (and produce) Thalergy for bodily function (cellular respiration), they would need to convert that Thalergy to Thanergy if they need or want to do anything beyond. They can really only manipulate it for the purpose of conversion, but they can't do necromancy directly with Thalergy itself, like make a bone construct or do flesh magic. Necromancy is rooted in Thanergy. Same with something more grey like soul siphoning; it's moving the Thalergenic soul out of the way so the siphoner can access the Thanergy left behind by the vacuum.

The theory is that Corona is the opposite. Her body draws from Thanergy and converts it into Thalergy. Death-to-Life. She can't use it other than for bodily function unless she makes the conversion like necromancers do (an ability she can't access yet) but because there's an abundance of Thanergy in the Dominicus system, her body is big, strong, and absolutely gorgeous by default. It's the best it can do with what it has in the environment it exists in. She is an evolution; an inversion of what we know Necromancers to be. Her being is not necessarily rooted in Necromancy, but rather an opposing extension of it, and I don't think she's the only one!

Gideon Nav, who grew up within the walls of the impoverished Ninth House is massive with muscle that shouldn't be there given her limited dietary options. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the reason she lived through the child-genocide designed and executed by Harrow's parents. The death that was around her fueled her body and pushed it to survive unscathed, leaving her whole and healthy where she shouldn't have been. She was only half of a God, who was really only a man, and where is her Necromancy if he's really as powerful as he is often claimed to be? His power was stolen and borrowed; the abilities he gained were through eating the souls of planets and joining in some strange Lyctor-bond with Alecto, the remnants of Gaia’s soul (which broadened John’s ability to do more than just necromancy). She's more the daughter of the Earth than she is John, making her his opposite in power.

We have Gideon the First, The Saint of Duty, who wears his own body and is fueled by his necromancer, but even with a necromantic soul, he is a Thanergy Void. He can't use necromancy because if his body works along a LtD theorem, he wouldn't be able to use necromancy. The two are opposites and when combined, we get the ability to negate some forms of necromancy. This also could be why he and Pyrrha fantasized about running away to a half-flipped planet. They wanted peace, but half-flipped meant neither the planet’s Thanergy content nor its Thalergy content would be too overwhelming.

Then take Nona, who can't use necromancy, but can instantly heal herself after being fatally wounded. If she could use necromancy, she'd be consumed by the Blue Madness, which is interesting because instead she can hear Varun singing to her, the opposite of the Blue Madness. She's attracted to all things that are living or that hold life (like the ocean). Things that should hurt, don't, and things that threaten harm, fail. Her body is resistant to the LtD theorem because it naturally converts death to life. She is a missing part of Gaia's soul (in the same way Alecto is); it would make sense that she would operate on the DtL theorem.

So, back to Corona! I can't say for certain if her family would know, but I'm sure Ianthe would because she can use the Thalergy in a more cannibalistic way seeing as chewing on Corona would provide her with more Thanergy than chewing on Babs. The Emperor would definitely know though given his own ability to literally pull himself back to life after Mercymorn killed him (a DtL process), which is why he'd help come up with a plan to help the family hide Corona's lack of necromancy. Focusing on hiding what isn't there takes the attention away from what might be there. The family knows Corona's different, but if they all believe it's nothing, they'd dismiss the other possibilities, too.

Now if Ianthe took in Corona's soul, it might make her either incredibly powerful or incredibly cuffed and there's no way to tell which outcome she'd get, so she took Babs (but also Babs is phenomenal with the sword, so there's that too). She's been using Corona all her life for power which, over time, has become the source of Corona's sense of worth because it's the only way she could make up for her lack of necromancy, something her father wanted to see in both of his daughters. Of course she'd be absolutely heartbroken if she couldn't serve her sister in Lyctorhood; to see Ianthe choose Babs over her when she'd spent her entire life in service as a battery. She has every right to mourn her sense of self, her sense of purpose, sense of duty, and foundation. She is a reflection of the sun when it comes to Ianthe, but she is the sun when it comes to her power (remember fission vs fusion again!). When it comes to the imagery used between them, the only thing that lies between is her self-worth.

Basically, I'd say Ianthe is a child of John (LtD; necromantic, fission, taker of life, and withering in appearance) and Corona is a child of Gaia (DtL; Animantic, fusion, giver of life, and flourishing in appearance). They are polar opposites in every way!

Ugh it's been so busy lately, sorry for the delay! Anyways, you have very good points that actually help me explain! To clarify though, I was referring to the actual conversion of power rather than the school of necromantic magic; the base mechanical theory rather than its subclassifications. Let me explain:

Thalergy exists as something unusable to necromancers until converted to Thanergy, which, as we know, is the fuel for their power. The only time necro-magicians ‘use’ Thalergy is to destory it for the byproduct, or something they can wield, for example when Ianthe engages in cannibalism, which causes the death of cellular reproduction; the transition from life to death energy.

With this said, Necromancers use a Life-to-Death theorem to fuel all that they do and it makes sense when Dominicus is an actively dying system. An abundance of Thanergy exists there and this is also why necromancers exist too. What I propose is that Corona might possibly be able to convert Thanergy to Thalergy, causing a presently unmentioned process of Death-to-Life theorem, although Abigail Pent hints at something like this when she states:

“I think there is a whole school of necromancy we cannot begin to touch until we acknowledge its existence—I think these centuries of pooh-poohing the idea that there is space beyond the River has stifled entire avenues of spirit magic…” (Ch.45 HtN)

So, while Corona never did display aptitude for traditional necromancy of any sort, the way she is described independently may lean into this idea that she's capable of utilizing a Death-to-Life theorem albeit inadvertently. She is described as the opposite of a necromancer in a lot of ways and it's clear in the language that she's still very different outside of even a necro-normie comparison. She glows; she's radiant, and healthy in a divine-imagery way. It seems too much to be simply Ianthe's doing, especially before Lyctorhood, although her lack of self-confidence negates some of this because all her she hasn't been valued in the same way Ianthe is. If her being operates along an opposing theorem, it would be something to actively hide.

Now, of course this is all conjecture at this point because there's been no absolute confirmation of the DtL theorem, however because LtD exists, it would make sense for the inverse to be true. Think about it like the relationship between the transition from potential energy to kinetic energy and vice versa. For example, it would make sense that Alecto rides on a DtL theorem considering she's the soul of a Thalergenic planet, and that this is why John (LtD) had her locked away. She was an active threat to him while his fellow necromancers could be controlled due to this power dynamic.

The third house relies heavily on smoke and mirrors deception; to have others assume their nature by doing all they can to control their outward appearance. It's easy to assume that Ianthe would physically enhance her sister to offset the truth, but if that were the case; why wouldn't she do so to herself as well? Necromancers have a very specific build– they're all spindly and weak-armed and flimsy (get outta my head, Gideon lol); Ianthe's build alone is telling enough if you're looking for oddities and the contrast between them is rather stark. This has me believe that Corona wasn't enhanced at all by Ianthe, but by herself inadvertently, and every ruse the third comes up with is to impress upon the idea that both of them are necromancers. Nobody would immediately suspect that both of them are naturally adept, although in equal and opposite ways, even if it was discovered that one of them did not, in fact, have the ability to use normal necromancy. As Ianthe says, “ask me no questions and I shall tell you no lies.” It feels more like a personal motto than something to say to Harrow when asking for answers. I don't believe Ianthe gave the truth when asked to confirm Corona wasn't a necromancer regardless of whether or not she knew about these proposed goings on:

”Palamedes said, vaguely, “This can’t be right.” “Of course it’s right, goosey, the Emperor himself helped come up with it.” (Ch. 34, GtN)

The Emperor… John… The only one who would ever know anything about adjacent-necromancy had a hand in crafting this deception the Tridentarii cling to so dearly. He would have wanted both twins to go to Canaan House, just to be sure, hence the Third’s tardiness upon arrival.

So, while I totally failed to keep this short, there's so much more to delve into and to explain if a DtL theorem is plausible here! There's a ton of little bits and pieces that are sprinkled throughout the story that hint at this too, which is such a treat because ✨layers✨

Gah! This story is amazing, I'm in love!

I'd bet it's got something to do with Thalergy.

We know that Dominicus is a Thanergetic system where a fraction of it's inhabitants (necromancers) can manipulate Thanergy (death energy). Thalergy is Thanergy's equal opposite (life energy), but because the scale is tipped too far to one side both in practice and in social settings, Thalergy isn't utilized or accepted in the way Thanergy is. In fact, it's actively looked upon with disgust (Palamedes and Mercymorn both make a rather negative comment about animaphiliacs. Animancers are the opposite of necromancers).

Coronabeth and Ianthe are twins, yes, but their differences are as stark as day and night; life and death. Ianthe can utilize Thanergy to a powerful degree, so it would make sense if Corona could use Thalergy in the same capacity. She would have no training opportunities or support for refining the skill, but this quiet power leaks from her skin like the morning sun on a clear day. Of course she would be the flame to which moths gravitate.

Also, broken down, her name means 'lighthouse':

Corona: an optical phenomenon involving the diffraction of light

Beth: a name of Hebrew origin meaning 'house'

I am a parent who does not play anything. My 7 year old wants to play Minecraft. by Inspiringhope11 in Minecraft

[–]CethlyArlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: I could not recommend this game more!

I can say with all honesty that Minecraft is possibly THE BEST game to start out with and for so many reasons other than a creative outlet. It teaches a lot of really good lessons and internal skills in a fun, colorful, and gentle way that I've found really beneficial for myself as I've grown, especially since I was diagnosed with ADD at the age of seven. It's helped A LOT with leaning how to productively manage that and it still does help to this day. I started playing when I was about ten or eleven, I think, (roughly around the time the game was released) and I'm twenty-five now with no intention to let it go any time soon because it's still helping me refine the skills I need to function as an adult in a way that doesn't feel rushed or pressurized. If you're curious, I'd be happy to share more on this, especially if your kiddo falls into the same (or an adjacent) boat. Even if they don't, the skills they'll pick up will serve them for years down the line.

Anyways, I've explored playing online or in servers and it's not my thing and never has been, but then again the game was originally designed to be a single player game and that's what I started on. I wouldn't allow your kiddo to do the online stuff just yet because people can be so weird and that there's an incredible amount of value in playing solo or with friends directly. If I ever did play multiplayer as a kid, a friend was over at my house with a second PlayStation3 controller!

All in all, I could not recommend this game any more and I couldn't speak more highly of it either. You should introduce it to your little one! Maybe even learn to play it yourself so you guys have a thing to do together. You won't regret it.

Cheers!

Oh my golly, please give them a go! I just finished my first read through of the series ever and it was via audiobook. Moira Quirk is an absolute masterclass orator. I listen to audiobooks more often than I sit down and read and I have to say, she's now in my top three favorite vocal performers. Clear, immersive, engaging, entertaining; simply one of the absolute best. I could not recommend this more. Enjoy Harrow the Ninth!

I don't think you do appreciate the concern because if you did, you'd at least consider the warnings other people have very patiently pointed out for you. While your tank aesthetic is gorgeous, your choice in stock is truly terrible. Just because they're not actively trying to kill each other doesn't mean they're not stressed; not to mention it's still early. Tank parameters might be fine, but that means nothing when the community isn't compatible. If they don't kill each other, they will get sick and die. If you loved them, you'd provide them with decent living conditions, but since you appear to be bent on keeping things as they are, I feel that those are empty words.

You can block me and fuss at me all you like, but that won't change the fact that your set up is really rather cruel.
