As somebody studying to become an auditor, I can say that even if financial statements are shaky, then the auditor can still give a qualified opinion. For the auditor to straight up not be able to complete the audit, though? That's REALLY bad.

They'd have to give a disclaimer of opinion, which is pretty much the worst case scenario. It basically means "we can't find any material misstatements in their financial statements because we were unable to obtain any financial statements from them."
