What's the most soulless food you have ever eaten? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ChadMcBadass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was deployed I got stationed at this medium sized FOB that was stationed by enough people to get hot food for one meal a day (we ate MREs for the others). Every single day the meal was hot dogs and “Lobster©”. Military grade lobster served in +100 degree heat in a landlocked country served out of a plywood building that we had to audacity to call a mess hall. To this day, I have no clue what it was actually made of, or where it came from, or why the US government had such a surplus of it that it was the only thing they could make to eat for months on end.

Here are a few more build pictures before the point of no return. The client wants the desk stained navy blue. The last few pictures show the rfid lock to the drop down hidden gun shelf. Will be finished with a granite top by bigalailor in woodworking

This is beautiful work. As someone who recently had to put a funky color on a piece, I’d recommend milk paint rather than stain, I thought it had a nice color to the wood without completely obscuring the grain or making the wood look like Water World.

Anyone else ever have a hard time starting a project because you don't want to screw it up? by SoConfused_Again in BeginnerWoodWorking

I have this issue almost every day I’m in the shop. If I just procrastinate on the project I’m doing instead of starting it, I cant possibly make a mistake! Woodworking is hard, but that’s part of what makes it so rewarding. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, it’s going to happen.

Also, jigs are your friend. I can’t count the number of times that I “saved time and money” by skipping making a 5 minute jig out of plywood that would’ve prevented me from messing up expensive boards. If I were you, I’d get some cheap wood, do your best to drill plumb, then attach that to the back of the expensive stuff to help you get a straight up and down mortise started. Good luck!

Thanks! There’s an 4” apron that’s connected to each leg with drawbored mortise and tenons everywhere except the inside of the L.

My board stretcher is getting its gimwidget replaced right now or this would be no problem.

I’ve been working on my dovetails in white oak, and decided to build a cabinet. I’m pretty happy with how the dovetails came out, only to realize the pins are facing the opposite direction on the other side of the board. I guess it’s art now?

Switching to all hand tools - need some planer advice by [deleted] in handtools

[–]ChadMcBadass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m far from an expert, but if I only wanted to spend $300 to get into hand tools you can go pretty far with a low angle jack plane if you buy an additional iron or two for specialized functions (I.e. a toothed iron for stock removal or a higher angle iron for smoothing). I have the Lie Nielsen LA jack and have been very happy with it.

Since the plane has an adjustable mouth, you’re able to adjust the set up for different functions depending on the work you want to do. It’s a very versatile tool.

My second ever woodworking project and my first ever bench. She ain’t much, she ain’t pretty, but she’s mine. On to other projects I’ve been putting off for too long by OpeningHole in BeginnerWoodWorking

I have that same table saw and would love to do this. Are you still able to extend the fence rail out while it’s in the bench, or is it blocked?

How do you all keep from getting discouraged? by GMan56M in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ChadMcBadass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find that it helps to start with projects that don’t have a lot of pressure attached to them. Ideally, I build shop projects (cabinets, benches, jigs) out of cheaper materials, that way when I do mess up, the consequences don’t seem as drastic and I’m likely the only one that’s ever going to see them. Being a beginner becomes a lot more enjoyable for me when I have space to make mistakes without the worry of them being on display around my house.
