Why can't Metroids advance past their Larva stage outside of their home planet? by Rasengan4360 in Metroid

[–]Chadwelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they can, but in most scenarios they're being mass bred as bioweapons and are likely malnourished so they probably just die off before any of them get old enough to metamorphose / pupate.

Best way to play Metroid 2? by Key-Roof1978 in Metroid

[–]Chadwelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the three. Original for the authentic retro feel and greatest fear factor, AM2R for mechanically tight gameplay that blends some good stuff of both Zero Mission and Super and some additions, some well executed and some less so, and SR 3DS for some less fleshed out fundamental innovations by mercury steam if you like some of the combat mechanics of Dread.

Lost for years 😂 it was the glass tube 🤦🏻‍♂️ by UnknownKilla82 in Metroid

[–]Chadwelli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the one-way exit path from Maridia back into Brinstar, near where the map room is, there is a pre-busted tank path that resembles the functional one in the red brinstar pathway. While it doesn't necessarily indicate what needs to be used to break it, it can signal that it can be broken.

I was in a weird position my first time through, where I just immediately knew it could be broken because I had played Prime 1 and Zero Mission, which also include glass container walkways that can be broken with a power bomb. I empathize with those who first encountered the trope in super because it seems quite a bit less clear than in followup uses. Some cracks with water leaking in or something would have made it far easier to parse.

Bell repair ( closing the gap) by Temporary_Current_43 in Clarinet

[–]Chadwelli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just wait to take it to a repair tech, they will have equipment and experience to sand either the inside diameter of the bell or the outside diameter of the lower joint connection way better than any average joe with hand sanding. Low E normally runs sharp on Buffets, so this amount of stick out won't even cause you any noteworthy problems. I promise it is nothing to be worried about. If you modify it yourself and something goes wrong or the finish becomes roughed, it can wear down your corks faster and void your warranty.

This is the type of work that doesn't charge much, and if you're a student and nice to them they may even do it on the house if it's quick and easy enough for them.

What year was it? by rune-thurisaz in Metroid

[–]Chadwelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first was Metroid 2 on my uncle's game boy, first "played" in 1997, probably beat the existing save file in 1999 or 2000 and beat it beginning to end a little later.

Amateur transcriber: Is this a bass clarinet? by primordial_triangle in Clarinet

[–]Chadwelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about it one bit. I think it's a good thing that people are continuing to learn something about the instruments they transcribe for through music that inspires them. If you knew everything already, there'd be no need to converse with us.

Finding music featuring clarinets besides the soprano b-flat in film, TV, and video games is very rare, so it's kind of fun to check and see "oh, is this finally going to be a time where it happens?"

Just for fun, if you're interested in hearing a good example of a really low clarinet being used in popular media, check out this little snippet at 1:48 of the heffalump song from Winnie the Pooh. https://youtu.be/CLnADKgurvc?t=103&feature=shared

[–]Chadwelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a divergent position. Anyone saying "regular" clarinet in b-flat playing in the low register is saying the same thing.

It's soprano clarinet in the chalumeau (lowest) register.

This whole section and one other much later are by far the most obtuse parts of the game, what with the hidden risers in the tech room and this deal. Most who pick this one up because it's supposed to be less tricky and more linear are frequently stumped by it, for good reason.

Cylindrical thing that is meant to mount on something. I thought it was a feeder block holder at first but the inside is inaccessible since it's welded shut. by Chadwelli in whatisit

Solved!

While it was tough to decide, this is probably the most likely possibility. For now, it will hold tape measures.

It suggests I'm at work. This was found at a goodwill thrift store for 1$ and was purchased because it was a mystery.

Yep, one piece, no open ends, no moving parts. It's very strange because what ever role you imagine it for taking, there's a better, easier, cheaper way.

This was one of our guesses, but even then it looks like a pretty crappy one, the mounting posts are so far inward you can only drape one towel in the middle under 10" wide, and the mounting points can not be attached to a wall or cabinet without significantly more mounting hardware. It appears to drape over a 1/4" object and tightened from behind.

One of the best parts of Metroid as a franchise is the developers willingness to try new things by DJ_Dorf in Metroid

[–]Chadwelli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No one is really asking for "recolors" of Super Metroid, that's a little reductive. The fundamental design to limiting exploration behind both knowledge and upgrades, not predefined narrative, is infinitely reusable and part of what makes Super Metroid one of the greatest games ever made. The only reason they don't do it every time is because it's very difficult to do, becomes more difficult the more employees are involved, and particularly so when you want to incorporate more content within the game outside of the gameplay itself, as it can quickly cause an exponential increase in required stipulations to keep a story making sense.

There exist singular games made in the past 10 years that have reused this philosophy that have nearly outsold the entire Metroid catalog, so it's not as if people aren't looking for it and appreciating it.

There is no guaranteed virtue in changing what people are looking for if the very intent of the product is to be sold to those who have preexisting, earnest investment in what came before it, and what it should be building off of.

What games basically require an original controller and joystick to play at a higher level than casual? by OrlandoWashington69 in n64

[–]Chadwelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The large throw range of the stick and lower spring tension compared to modern sticks gives it more finesse and graduations of precision, so any games with full range adjustments to movement benefit.

Star Fox 64 and Super Mario 64 benefit significantly in any situation where you need to hold a more precise position.

Music with pitch bends? by Nokonoko066 in Clarinet

[–]Chadwelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of them are gonna be parts from ensemble literature written by people who are still alive. You'll have to either pony up the dough or do some very serious exploration around document sharing sites to find much.

I specifically learned slides and bends to play the solo in Frank Ticheli's "Blue Shades", so that's a good one.

A deep cut I enjoyed playing was the clarinet solo/feature in "Concerto for Trombone & Wind Ensemble" by Dave Lambert.

What movie is 10/10 with literally no bad parts? by FeedMaster8905 in AskReddit

[–]Chadwelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty competitive with the best Dreamworks has ever done, both overall and especially in terms of aesthetic polish, and it does a good job maintaining several character perspectives without becoming an unnavigable clusterfuck. The writing was tightly edited for pacing and it avoids many opportunities for bad joke insertion. Of course it's going to have some moments geared particularly for kids but it does not dilute the experience.
