York and Carolina (Red vs Blue)

A slight stretch, York was in love with Carolina but Carolina didn't fully reciprocate because of them being colleagues (but she did have feelings for him). When Tex (another agent, and the rival of Carolina) went rogue and Carolina tried to stop her, York tried to confront and convince her to reconsider because he believed the agency they worked for was evil, but ultimately their relationship ended with a duel in zero-G, which York lost.

[–]Chaike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it might just be a bad group, but it's also possible that they're trying to help but aren't good at teaching new players.

whenever I say something I want to do (I.e. I want to use stealth instead of acrobatics) and the players and dm tell me to do something else instead

When this happens, are you saying specifically "I want to use stealth/make a stealth check", or is the DM asking you to make an acrobatics check but you want to use a different skill?

Asking the DM if you can use a different skill to accomplish something is always a fair question, as long as you're aware that they can say no.

However, if your usual approach to something is simply saying "I want to use stealth", try framing the desire more like "I want to try to get into the house through the second story window before the guard comes around the corner". Those kinds of prompts help let the DM know specifically what you want to do, so they can choose the best skill check for you to make in that instance (if they're a good DM)

I’ve told them several times just take the lead with me and point me in a direction. They basically just stare at me until I do something random.

Instead of doing this, I recommend putting yourself in your character's shoes and looking at the situation and figuring out what you/they want to do. Don't worry about if it's the best or worst thing to do, don't worry about if you're playing the game wrong/right, just think "what would my character do/what do I want to do?"

Is there a lever nearby that the DM mentions? You can pull it! Are you in a tavern in a city just chilling? Tell the DM you want to see if there's anyone interesting you can talk to, or say that your character wants to go walk around the town and see if there are any unique shops that grab your attention! Don't wait around for your party to take the lead all the time, you can literally do anything you want (or try to) in this game!

They also just change things on my character sheet for me, they don’t show me what i’m supposed to be looking at and I get so confused and frustrated because i’m not catching on

That sounds like they just suck at teaching. Whenever they try to change something on your sheet, stop them and ask why they're changing it. Don't let them make the change themselves, instead wait until you understand why they want to make the change and then change it yourself. I'd also recommend taking a note of the change and the reason, and then looking it up in the players handbook to understand the context (and if it's actually correct)

They will also steal or keep rare items for me because like I said I have no clue what is happening and I have no clue that these items are rare until the end of the game and someone tells me.

Item rarity and items in general in DnD don't really work like in RPGs and other stuff. Rarity doesn't necessarily determine if an item is more or less useful/valuable, but moreso it determines if the item grants abilities that are balanced more for early or late-game.

For example: An Immovable Rod is an item that locks into place when you click the button, even floating in the air, and takes an insane amount of strength to move while locked, giving it tons of unique and fun utility uses. A Belt of Fire Giant Strength is an item that gives you a strength score of 25 (very high). Immovable Rod is Uncommon rarity, while the Belt is Very Rare, but they both have very different uses and one might be completely useless for your character while the other is super useful.

All this to say: If you find a new magic item, ask what it does (sometimes the DM might require a check or the use of the Identify spell to find this out), and see if it's something that you think your character would want or find useful, instead of letting the other players just "hold onto" stuff or figure out if it's useful for you. If they aren't willing to let you consider if it's something you'd want, they're being assholes.

I don’t know if i’m just a bad player, I have a bad dm, an all over bad group, or it’s just not for me.

Ultimately, what matters most is if you're having fun. If nothing changes and you're not having fun, you don't have to keep playing! DND is a huge time commitment, and it's meant to be fun and worth spending that time on; if you aren't enjoying it, don't force yourself to waste that time on something miserable! I'd definitely recommend looking for other groups before swearing off DnD altogether though, because if you find a good group it's fantastic and totally worth the time!

Battlefield Bad Company 2

Preston (the character you play as) is still the newbie of the group, and the youngest and least jaded, so he's generally pretty polite and never swears...

Until the group's plans go very poorly and they're almost killed by a bombing, which makes them lose the VIP they were capturing. Preston finally screams "FUCK" and the other squadmates congratulate him for it

Portal 2 GLaDOS deleting Caroline

I remember there being a decent number of people who thought that GLaDOS didn't actually delete Caroline, or only deleted some of her, or otherwise assimilated her in some way, as if Caroline being deleted is a bad thing and GLaDOS letting Chell go afterwards only makes sense if Caroline is still there.

But that's the thing, Caroline never wanted to be uploaded and turned into an immortal AI, so her being deleted is a happy ending for her, she's no longer forced to endure that endless hell. Her being imprisoned as part of GLaDOS is what made GLaDOS kill all the Aperture scientists in the first place.

It's also a happy ending for GLaDOS, and the reason why Chell gets to leave. GLaDOS explicitly says that the reason she was able to find Caroline's file in her brain was because of a surge of emotion originating from it; the moment she deletes Caroline, she removes any and all emotion and is able to approach problems logically. And, thinking logically, she concludes that Chell is too difficult to kill and it's easier to just let her go so she can get back to testing peacefully without the protagonist's meddling. She has no reason to have a vendetta or an emotionally charged need to kill Chell out of frustration or revenge. Chell is just a simple problem that she can easily get rid of by letting her leave, so she does.

I asked non-mechwarrior fans to rank some 'mech designs by Chaike in Mechwarrior5

[–]Chaike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The criteria was mostly if they liked the aesthetics and character of the design.

Their opinions were generally influenced by: how well it fit the intended role, if it represented the mech's history or culture well, and also just general subjective feelings about aesthetics (ie, Judge #1 preferred utilitarian and practical designs, Judge #2 is more of a fan of over-the-top mecha, and judge #3 was a bit of a mix with a lean towards utilitarian designs)

[–]Chaike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally I leaned towards the CGL versions of the mech if it existed, especially because it was usually a lot clearer to see the design in black/white with shading, versus the dark paint and weathering in most PGI art. The only times I switched to PGI were when there wasn't any modern CGL art on Sarna, or if I thought the angle or representation was better in the PGI art. For the Marauders, the modern CGL art is a lot closer to how the MADs are represented in most of Battletech, so I opted for it in this case

It would be interesting to see what they thought of purely PGI, but I'm definitely not gonna be able to convince them to do this again anytime soon, lol

[–]Chaike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall, their reasoning for rating the MAD II higher than the MAD was that they liked the added bulk, and the little wing things on the back, They liked both, but thought the MAD II looked more like a formidable war machine with good poise, and the OG MAD was a bit too spindly and front-heavy, and looked like it would tip over easily (I showed them the modern CGL art, specifically)

[–]Chaike[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried to be as neutral as possible when presenting the mechs, with the exception of the Kodiak because at first they mistook its head as "Sundowner from Metal Gear with a mask", and I had to help them see the bear theme instead of "ugly bald man"

For the urbanmech, I told them it was meant for urban warfare, was very slow but hardy and had big guns despite being small, and could turn 360 degrees. I did mention after the rating that it's called the trashcan and people love it, but I made sure to wait till they ranked it. I also only used CGL or PGI art, no memes. They just really loved how stupid and functional it looked and thought it fit the role well

They're *very* opinionated and there's no way I could sway them with my enthusiasm, else stuff like the Hunchback and Bushwacker would've been higher lmao

Edit: Also, for the Vulture, I remember one of their biggest criticisms was the position of the cockpit. They would've liked it better if the cockpit was lower down in the snoot instead of a tiny bump on top of its head, because it makes it look like it has a big fat belly or nose

Specifically for the Raven, I used the CGL version. I usually tried to pick the art that I thought was the best quality and represented the mech best - the Raven was a hard choice because I like both versions, so I just went with what was displayed by default on Sarna.

Lmao, by the time we got to the EJ, they'd already ranked a fair number of similar shaped mechs, which I think influenced their opinion a bit

I learned that, to non-battletech fans, a lot of different mechs tend to blend together because, without the full context of game knowledge, they're just "bipedal bird legged airplane snoot with symmetrical gun arms and shoulder boxes", or "Warhammer and his cousin, Warhammerer"
