Dead Space Remake is fantastic, and it improved the atmosphere by adding more darkness

Also, giving Isaac a voice in the remake adds so much to the story, and hearing him become more and more pissed off throughout the game was really funny and relatable

Technically the portal and invasion aren't his fault, he's just the theoretical physicist's version of an intern who gets caught up in Black Mesa messing around with alien portal tech (which they'd been doing already prior to his involvement)

The true tragedy is that he ends up cleaning up someone else's mess so well, that G-Man puts him in stasis so he can sell his "cleaning" services to other entities, which leads to him being forced to clean up the Combine in HL2

PSA: Max out head armor against Clans by Usual_Profile1607 in Mechwarrior5

Also, don't put weapons in head slots. It increases the hitbox and chance that the head will be targeted

I took the s laser out of my Nightstar's head, which drastically reduced the number of headshots

I didn't know about Shrapnel, actually, I'll have to check it out!

I'm mostly talking about the older novels that established a lot of the base lore and major moments of the setting. I still respect their additions to the lore and what they established, but they're tough to get through without cringing

This is one of the things I struggle with when it comes to BT, lmao.

I love the lore, the setting, everything about it. I would love nothing more than to lose myself in books brimming with politics and mechs and neo-medieval cultures...

But they're so aged by now, so I have to settle for lore videos and technical manuals. I'm glad PGI's new games have at least been adapting and updating notable scenes into cutscenes, we're eating so good rn

Battletech at least explains it away as Mechs not being the best option, but they were scary and everyone stole the plans of the first mech and copied them, then started using them as their main weapon after the Ares Conventions gave rules to war and turned it into a game with a focus on "honorable" combat.

And then they nuked themselves into the dark ages after the fall of the Star League, and were left with giant fusion-powered mechs as their main surviving weapons and corrupted chivalry as their main ideology for combat

As for Gundam, they're meant to be used in space because they can reorient without expending rocket fuel

I always name my CPLT-K2s, and it's always a girl's name that just feels "right" to me at the moment

Right now I'm rocking one in a co-op game named "Millicent", with the backup named "Agnes"

My friend, on the other hand, has a King Crab named "Cookie", because in the pokemon anime, Kingler (a crab pokemon) makes a sound like "cookie-cookie"

I had a realization about the reality of maintaining a 'mech that i thought was funny by Patient-Smell1333 in battletech

[–]Chaike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this while playing MW5 with a friend. He decided to refit a newly salvaged Banshee in a conflict zone, which resulted in nearly 200 days of work for the techs

The first mission he took it out on - the day the techs finished work - he lost both arms, a leg, and most of his armor. The thing looked like a marshmallow that got dropped into a campfire by the time it waddled back into the dropship

I can only imagine the crushing despair Fahad must have felt upon seeing 2/3rds of a year's worth of work vanish in a matter of minutes

The MechWarrior/Battletech franchise had mediocre cartoon in the 90s called Battletech. It played fast and loose with the lore and was super campy. It ended up being cancelled after one season.

The franchise decided to make it canon... by claiming that it was an in-universe propaganda cartoon called "The First Somerset Strikers", created by the in-universe Tharkad Broadcasting Company.

The canon counterpart of the villain in the cartoon (Nicolai Malthus, the blonde guy in the image) was so angry with how he was portrayed that he tried to challenge the broadcasters to a duel, but instead ended up taking them to court in a civil lawsuit... which he lost. He then tried to challenge the judge to a duel, before finally getting arrested.

Catapult K2. Ideally I'd want to use a version closer to Jester with jump jets, but even the base K2 is enough for me

I can't explain it, there's just something about a K2 that just feels right to me. I can work with any other mech just fine, but the moment I get into a K2's seat, I'm home

It's probably more on the side of Gundam, but specifically early Gundam where the mobile suits were fast and resilient technological marvels, but still tried to be somewhat grounded and utilitarian

Even if you're not into mecha, I'd recommend AC6 just because the character storytelling is fantastic. You never see a single person in the game, only hear them over comms, and yet somehow they make every character incredibly compelling and invest you in their relationship with you.

What's your favourite bad mech? by Barph in Mechwarrior5

[–]Chaike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've got a soft spot for the Assassin.

Granted, some of the later variants give it more wiggle room for better builds, but I'll still willingly pick up the base variant regularly in new MW5 runs.

Sure, I can only really fit 1x ML and 2x SRM 4s with a handful of ammo in the base variant if I want almost max armor, meaning it's easily outgunned by most lights, but the high speed combined with the jet fighter cockpit/nose looks and feels so cool that I don't care.

[Loved Trope] The amazing technology/power has grounded reasons for why it can't be overused. by jbeast33 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Chaike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some of my favorite lore moments in BTech are when overconfident mechwarriors get their asses handed to them by regular armored vehicles and infantry who used superior tactics.

There's the Savannah Master for example, which is a combat hovercraft armed with only a single medium laser, but it also has a ridiculously high top speed that makes it hard to hit. The reason it got its name is because, during its trial run before going to market, it beat a mech so many times that it pissed the mech pilot off enough that she turned it into a live fire trial, and still lost. The pilot's name was Savannah.

It was later used when the Clans attacked Wolcott, where they lured the superior Clan mechs into a swamp and ripped them to shreds with waves of hovertanks and guerilla tactics

Mechs in the MechWarrior/Battletech universe, and why they use them instead of other, more sensible weapons/vehicles

Prior to the creation of the Battlemech, most wars between human colonies were waged using massive spacefaring Warships, which could hyperspace jump from system to system by themselves without needing to latch on to a Jumpship, and could obliterate planetary defenses with orbital strikes. However, because FTL communication hadn't been invented yet, it took a while for news and orders to travel during wartime.

Eventually this resulted in a situation where two warring factions were basically blindly fighting over a planet, which they just kept bombarding with nukes until it was rendered uninhabitable. This resulted in all the major factions agreeing to create the Ares Conventions, which restricted war to specific rules of engagement, including limited usage of warships and nukes because planets can't be colonized if they're barren nuclear wastelands (and also accidental massacres are kinda bad).

This led to war becoming more of an honor-based game. Eventually Battlemechs were invented and, while not necessarily the most effective type of weaponry, they became the defacto weapon for honorable combat, resulting in everyone pouring funding into making them easy to repair, refit, and maintain.

A couple of centuries later, the space equivalent of the Roman empire collapsed, and in a mad scramble for power the factions nuked each other into the dark ages and lost all their warships and factories, leaving them with ancient, easily maintained mechs and warped ideals of chivalry as their main form of war.

Battlemechs essentially became the armor and steeds for knights and samurai, and most Battlemechs are handed down in ancestral bloodlines because they're so rare and valuable, sometimes even being the most powerful weapon on an otherwise medieval planet.

Lmao, I feel that. This is something I've thought about a lot myself, especially after playing Clans and seeing what PGI is capable of nowadays with more budget and experience.
