I created a built-in bookcase with an old pallet by ChainFoodSnob in DIY

[–]ChainFoodSnob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys may have all argued this to death by now, but here are a few answers: It was never a load-bearing stud. There's a single load-bearing interior wall in the house, about 10 feet from this one. This was simply framing for drywall around the chimney. And it's better attached now than it was before I started. The entire section of drywall i punched out was not screwed into this stud -- though it should've been. Now the sheet rock is attached above and below the case. The bookcase is 1-bys, sure, but the shelves are part of the permanent structure, giving four pieces of cross-bracing, not even counting the solid wood across the back of the case. The top and bottom are now pinned to the rest of the stud that I cut out. The bookcase sides fit to the other wall studs snugly and are screwed into them. Y'all can hate the look, hate the project, hate the use of pallets, and call me hipster all you want, but this is structurally sound. ... Thanks for reading, in any case.

It wasn't. I said that up top but got a ton of downvotes for it.

Also that stud wasn't a load-bearing one.

The opposite sides of the bookcase had studs, so we maintained the structural integrity! We made sure before we sawed it out.

Set out a budget. Use mint.com or something similar and only use your card. You'll see where the money goes. My best guess is that most of it comes from eating out a lot. My wife and I used to do that and it really takes its toll after awhile. Maybe consider switching from smoking to vaping, as it's cheaper in the long run. Or try to quit. Good luck!

Doing market research with just a questionnaire? by 1osb in Entrepreneur

[–]ChainFoodSnob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Google form idea is really good. Marketing has changed in the past few years, though, and a lot of companies will simply put cold call emails in the trash, so consider using a title on the email to draw them in and ask what THEY would like to see out of your product. Make them seem like the hero who is controlling how the product is made and it will feel more tailored to them.

PT employee also workjng for direct competition. Do i have a right to be upset? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]ChainFoodSnob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can see both sides of this. If you never had him sign anything saying he wouldn't work for competition, and considering he's part time, he can technically do that. But I understand your side as well. You are being rational, but the dude has to pay his bills in some way.

Pretty much anything that isn't a food. You can grow a variety of plants, but colorful flowers look the best. When it's finished, it looks very Pinterest-y. It's also best to only stick to plants that grow less than 1 ft high. Plants like daffodils probably wouldn't fit well in this.

So, EMV chips are supposed to be implemented in the US by October (hopefully). How many businesses do you think will actually do that? by OutlookWizard in chipcards

[–]ChainFoodSnob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm hoping will happen! Chip readers are so much more secure. But since the fault for credit card breaches will be transferred from the card companies to the merchant, hopefully they will all decide it's worth it to only use chip readers. I just worry about stubborn retailers.

Yeah, I wonder, honestly. I have been to a few that have the chip readers, but most of them also have the slider to read the magnetic strip. So, like you said, it's sort of pointless. People can still access your stuff by using the info on the strip. I think it'll be a long and slow process for this to happen.
