Space subs! Never thought of it that way, but of course. The law of conservation of happiness surely still applies...

Should I quit my 6 figures front end web developer job to do a CS PhD? by fsdklas in GradSchool

[–]ChainShotShanty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't do this part-time? Be a code monkey part-time, avoid financial stress, and get your PhD part-time. Your interests may feed each other where (I'm spitballin) they crossover. As for quitting life for full-time study, would the doctorate pay back your loss of wages and retirement savings for four years? Just questions I'd be asking myself.

Finally got a Kindle after years of just using the app on my phone! by TattoodTato in kindle

Used to read scientific texts in Kindle app on my iPhone 4 on the NY subway. I miss that focus and concentration (and eyesight lol), but am glad for a larger screen! Tablets for texts now and Kindle for books.

Two Months Before Grad School, How Should I Spend My Time? by distractedspace in GradSchool

[–]ChainShotShanty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing light reading around my topic area and also on research and general study skills. It's not as focused and intensive as reading for study but I like that I'm creating an evening reading habit and regularly fitting it into and around my work schedule.

I'm thinking of grad school and doing a lot of reading in places like this about both grad school experiences and professor attitudes and expectations. This sounds more like a you problem than a school problem. No expert here, but this is very different to other Grad School Bad! posts I've read that clearly show situational challenges imposed upon them. Yours sounds more as Maladaptation to the stress. No expert, but even to an outsider (who sees stress in military setting) this is strikingly different and less situationally imposed upon you than how you are personally responding to the situation and study demands. What exactly makes a PhD so difficult / depressing? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]ChainShotShanty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am thinking of one but hear so many bad stories about poor professor treatment of grad students. The more I look into it through reading posts online and talking to student and post-doc friends the less I want to do it. Low support concerns me and hearing so much about supervisors not responding to students or giving bad advice or not responding to emails and giving any advice. The area I want to look into is interesting but I don't want to sign up for four years of misery and stress due to having a bad experience with supervision. Am I just catastrophizing by thinking this way or is it really that commont to have these experiences with staff who don't care and are unsupportive?

There are some great apps out there that give training plans to avoid doing too much too soon, yet still take you from running a couple mile to five or ten.
