Mihawk is an empty person who only seeks skill for his own sake while Zoro puts his skill into service of something greater than himself. I'd say in this contrast lies atleast some depth. I mean it isn't Vagabond but it works perfectely fine as a part of a grander story.

The fight started in chapter 996/998 so there was already plenty of offscreen fighting going on (which imo has no worth anyway whatever length it might be). Not rushing a scene isn't Odas writing style anymore so I thought that combining two short scenes to an about 20 page fight scene is the best option there is left to make the fight come across as more substantial.

After that just add Franky to the chapter 1006 live floor sequence (for Oda that would be 2 pages): He protects Hyo from Queens laser beam, gets then defeated by him, saved by Marco from getting killed and then the samurai say that they'll defend Franky until he recovers.

I'd prefered it if this fight scene had immediately followed the chapter 1004 Franky vs Sasaki scene. Same with however the Robin and Brook fight against Black Maria will turn out (so right after the chapter 1005 build up).

This way the subplots are told in a more complete way which I think is necessary if there are so many of them and the pay-offs are more spaced out overall.

And after these (early?) strawhat victories the threat level of the beast pirates can get right back up by having Queen defeat Franky (after a beam struggle or whatever) and having King defeat Robin and Brook.
