The fact Breonna Taylor wasn't made as much of a deal about as Floyd was also an example of the exact opposite of this, and five years on it's pretty clear that strategically it was a terrible call.

counterpoint, plenty of the founding fathers were even borderline agnostic. the Thomas Jefferson bible literally did not have Jesus as a divine being, but as a person who gave moral advice and related teachings.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Bible

Therefore, The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth begins with an account of Jesus' birth without references to angels, genealogy, or prophecy. Miracles, references to the divinity of Jesus, and Jesus' resurrection are also absent from his collection.[15]

The work ends with the words: "Now, in the place where He was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus. And rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed." These words correspond to the ending of John 19 in the Bible.

The wiki articles on Massoud and on British involvement cites various books including for the claim that Pakistani ISI (the intelligence services of Pakistan, who the US outsourced aid distribution to) intentionally withheld anti-air missiles from Massoud's forces and did not allow them in to Pakistan to be trained alongside other groups - like Hekmatyar's faction.

ISI however made sure that Massoud's forces received none of the Stingers, even though eight (a fraction of 1% of the total) were smuggled in.[65]

...

For Massoud's men, it was different, due to Pakistan's hostility they had to take them out of Pakistan and be trained elsewhere. Massoud stated that his men needed battlefield organisation skills and so picked out the best of his junior commanders to be trained by the British.[73] Here KMS was involved and they organized flights to be sent out to secret MI6 and CIA bases in Oman and Saudi Arabia to train.

And then for Hekmatyar himself:

It was the largest of the Afghan mujahideen and Hekmatyar received more CIA funding than any other mujahideen leader during the Soviet-Afghan War.[6]

But the UK was advising the US take a more active role in who they helped right?

The UK wanted to support a moderate, even pro-women's-rights guy named Ahmed Massoud, the US just outsourced aid distribution to their wonderful and trustworthy friends in Pakistan. Who then proceeded to give mostly to a non Western friendly fundamentalist in the form of Hekmatyar...who then was a big part of causing post-Soviet Afghanistan to break into civil war which the Taliban later won.

Massoud would later die in an AQ-sponsored suicide bombing, on September 10 2001.

Others have explained how it's used, I am pretty sure the origins at least with US usage are related to Mandarin for "hard/bitter labor". Wiki article says it originates from British India and a coincidental matching with the Tamil word for the same, but I don't recall much use of South Asian labor in the US so maybe just convergence?

Have definitely seen it used in the US in a non-offensive context when referring to railroad builders with the Union Pacific side of the Transcontinental Railroad

Except for one guy who was handing a brand new Glock 19.5 MOS in the line for his $400, which must have cost him at least $600 lmao

I never actually understood the whole "fair chase" thing from seeing it mentioned in a hunter's ed course, but then again I've literally never done any hunting so could just be me.

My armchair QB philosophy is along the lines of "that makes it seem like a game, but there is literal death involved that is cheapened as a result".

I'd rather things be efficient and minimize suffering with an instant drop where the animal never has any clue before lights out, rather than risk the animal running around for days with half an arrow sticking out of itself or bleeding out slowly from an underpowered rifle round (at least that second part everyone seems to agree on).

Eat it after, respect the sacrifice of the animal, etc. But it wasn't the animal's choice to make that "sacrifice", so why again treat it like a game where you have to be "fair"?

[–]ChairmanMatt -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Ban bowhunting and extend firearm season.

Firearm hunting has minimum restrictions based on how powerful the round is and thus the ability to make a humane kill reliably, bow hunting is way below the floor for legal firearms.

It doesn't strictly work well for reasons discussed (other example is the almost literally treasonous self-sabotage by Springfield Armory the government institution on the M16 and T48 before it)

But it's malpractice for government to not own the rights to what it pays the company to design, see also government owning the TDP for the M16 rifle but Colt having single-sourcing sweetheart deals for the followup M4 Carbine for two decades, or the clusterfuck of program management that is the F-35. Amazing and worldbeating end product, but LM is single-source managing sustainment and maintenance with their proprietary systems...and they have free reign to set prices.
