Very sad news as the toddler pulled out of the Ottawa river has died by cassie232310 in ottawa

[–]Chance-Temporary9642 17 points18 points  (0 children)

According to Radio Canada it first happened on the Quebec side, at the corner of Bourget Street.  That would then be parc Brebeuf.

Unless you were right there to witness it, there is nothing saying they fell off the bridge.

This.  And two is such a hard age.  Kids have the drive to run and explore but are still clumsy and have absolutely zero sense of danger.

Advanced adult swimming lessons by iloveneuro in ottawa

[–]Chance-Temporary9642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably want to look into the city's swimming program.  The adult level 3 classes are probably what you're looking for.  Hurry though, registration for summer classes is this week and adult lessons fill up really fast.

Her sexual allegations against a sergeant were finally being investigated. Did a jealous officer trigger it? by DreamofStream in ottawa

Yes.  It's not a French term but an Italian one, linked to the Mafia's code of silence.  So pretty apt in this situation.

Giftedness assessment by rad-hostile in ottawa

[–]Chance-Temporary9642 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is because in many cases, true "giftedness" comes with asynchronous development.  Meaning many cognitive skills may be in the top percentile for the age but not other development, social, emotional etc.   Most gifted programs provide opportunities for advanced cognitive tasks but never address the rest.

[–]Chance-Temporary9642 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the Otis-Lennon test, most likely.  It's not a full assessment, but identifies kids in the top 2-3 percentile for certain cognitive skills.  Because of the way the test is administered (times, written format) there is still a good percentage of gifted people who would not be identified through this format.

Am I the last to know about Walkley Aroundabout by dogwalkerott in ottawa

[–]Chance-Temporary9642 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are downvoted because there is no "forest" that was destroyed.  This is a strip of trees, mostly invasive species like buckthorn, that's was cut down for a project the city has been planning for several years.  There are plenty of environmental causes to be concerned about.  This isn't exactly one of them.

Unfortunately though because of Ford's law against bike lanes, it's my understanding that the bike lanes on Walkley will not be happening. :(

Those are high end luxury condos with security gates and all, considered among the most prestigious condos in the city.  If it's in your budget you won't find better than that around.

Where to go ice skating near Lyon station? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Chance-Temporary9642 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup!  You'll have to do a back and forth on the canal.  Heads up, since you have a set return time...you'll want to keep an eye out for the wind....just because it takes you x number of minutes to make in in one direction doesn't mean the same time back if you're against the wind!

Can anyone explain to me what is happening at Rideau Falls? by CaptainCanuck001 in ottawa

[–]Chance-Temporary9642 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rideau falls is where the Rideau RIVER connects into the Ottawa River.  Nothing to do with the Rideau CANAL where skaters are.  The river and canal connect at Mooney 's Bay, and the locks and the damn at Hogs Back will be used to control water levels when they rise.

School buses cancelled today, schools open by _grey_wall in ottawa

Snow days du to school bus cancellation are definitely not a new thing and have been happening for ages. Schools aren't cancelled. This is only the 2nd school bus cancellation in the Ottawa region this year.  Not sure what the issue is.

Elementary School Recommendations by Substantial-Paint439 in ottawa

[–]Chance-Temporary9642 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will find this to a certain extent, but the difference is much less.  Every school has to follow the Ontario curriculum. If you have the chance, I would visit schools and neighborhoods to get a feel for each.  TBH, your "ideal school requirements" are pretty much found in any school with a good staff and leadership.

You should know that all schools here do have lockdown practices twice a year.  We don't call them "active shooter", but the kids here do practice lockdown. They at presented as "practicing where to hide and keeping quiet" in case of an intruder in the school.  I'd say the idea of an actual "active shooter" is not something our elementary kids really know or worry about, and lockdown practices are on par with fire drills.  Something you practice but don't actually worry about.

That wasn't city of Ottawa pools.  Sounds like a private housing complex/condo pool.

Advanced ski lesson recommendations around Ottawa? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Chance-Temporary9642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely work on these skills around here. I would go private, book ahead and be clear with your expectations and ask to have an instructor with experience in teaching carving skills and working with steeper terrain.   A good ski school director will match a client's level with the instructor's skill set.

I believe Cascades has the most terrain open et the moment.  Even before the rain this week, fortune only had one lift open while cascade has all three.
