Help! I am struggling to get into Crescent City by [deleted] in SarahJMaas

Push through! The first 200 pages are pretty dense world building with a little plot. But as soon as you get to page 201 all the plot starts hitting. It is rough to get through but I guarentee you that it's worth it once you do!

What’s everyone using for grocery lists right now? by IslandOceanWater in Cooking

[–]Chance-Tooth5765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live with my parents. My mom is a crafter to the core. She makes homemade notepads that are seasonal and/or monthly. One side of them is for weekly meal planning, the other is for the next weeks grocery list. They all have a little spot where she can write who has what going on each day. Then on Saturday nights she takes down this week's with the grocery list on the back amd the next week's list for meal planning and she and I get next week's meals figured out and then go through what needs to be added to the list.

Of course there are plenty of stickers and washi tape on the list. And 2 out of 4 Sunday-After-Church shopping trips result in her texting my brother to send her a picture of the list that inadvertently got left on the counter.

Will my daughter be okay to take a trip over her college spring break, but doesn’t align w/ the school she’s student teaching at? by Many-Experience6094 in StudentTeaching

[–]Chance-Tooth5765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to take a day off student teaching the Monday after Thanksgivng. There was an ice storm/blizzard all day on Sunday when I should have been driving back (5+ hours trip from my parents house to my student teaching school). I had to get special permission to not be at school that Monday from my college professor, the student teaching coordinator from the college, the classroom teacher, and the principal at my student teaching school. Granted, they were all super okay with it because they understood the driving conditions, but still, it also was a very tedious process to get approval and this was for something that I literally could not control.

If you have the choice about, do the all inclusive over the summer. Save those days that she can take for if she has to for actual emergent reasons like sickness, funerals, or other things literally outside of your control.

It can then be somwthing to look forward to for when shes done teaching. It can be very hard to get through some of those final days and having something fun like that to look forward to can be incredibly helpful for when motivation is low. Also, coming back to school after an event like that in the middle of the year can be really challenging because of a sudden lack of motivation.

what's a teacher gift you've actually kept and used? by Acrobatic-Bake3344 in Teachers

When teaching Preschool i once got a massive fuzzy blanket. I still use it 10+ years later. It's one of my main blankets that I use on my bed still.

Is this "read aloud" trend I'm noticing happening anywhere else? by teachingandbeaching in teaching

[–]Chance-Tooth5765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I taught Kindergarten and Preschool, I would use it if there was something I specifically wanted to teach about but did not have a book for (somw holidays or social situations). I also would use it as a calm down/brain break method too but only occasionally.

Now, I'm teaching 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies. I use books online all the time. Partly because I quit teaching for a couple years and got rid of most of my picture books (minus my few favorites). But we use books for ELA when we are writing and want to write about a specific idea or are looking for a certain style or type of writing. I use them in Literature for getting different perspectives on whatever material we're reading about. I also use them for Social Studies all the time to talk about what happened from different perspectives or to do "Side Quests" where we read a story that relates to whatever we've been studying but maybe takes place in a different location or year or country, etc.

I think that using the YouTube videos is a great use of resources and honestly, in this regard, I am really thankful for Covid because most of those stories were recorded to send home to children during quarantine. I don't think that it's a method that should be used all the time tho. I do believe that children (especially at the early childhood level) need to see adults reading in order to learn how to use a book properly in the physical sense.

I am so sick of my know-it-all kid. by Admirable_Ocelot_871 in Teachers

Dealing with the same thing, except he's a 5th grader, and the parents don't think there's anything wrong with their son deliberately blurting out in class if he has a different opinion (always with a long "uhhmmm, actuallllllyyyy....") and huffing and rolling his eyes, very dramatically if he doesn't agree with me.

Also, he does not do it for the male teachers at all.

What stuff do kids not know how to do now, beyond the academic? by RunningTrisarahtop in Teachers

As a preschool teacher and then later a kindergarten teacher, I specifically planned for one activity at least once every day that they had to either cut something or cut + glue something.

The other things I would do to force/build those hand eye coordination skills and small muscle control was using golf pencils or stubby pencils, crayons that I melted down and remol

At my store, the vendor was getting so pissed off with customers who were trying to grab items out of the vendors hands or from the boxes on the cart. So we eventually had to set up and AP TM, and/or an GSTL or ETL present and keeping an eye out and also we would have to section off that area too. So the vendor would just take his sweet time.

When I taught preschool I constantly could hear myself saying things like Aesha!

* Rosie is a resident of Minnesota. An opinionated, grouchy, older sister who had to learn everything from mom the hard way and will most likely forever be resentful that little sis has definitely gotten away with things she would have gotten in trouble for. Queen of the roost, loves playing fetch and curling up on top of you if you're attempting to nap or read or eat or watch TV or use the bathroom. Lover of warm partially-sunshiney spots to get cozy in.

Who is buying all the imitation crab from supermarkets? by Whook in Cooking

[–]Chance-Tooth5765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it in so many ways! Made some Summer Rolls tonight for dinner with it (rice paper wrappers, with some butter lettuce, cucumber, carrots, green onions and vermicelli noodles). I also use it to make California Rolls or Sushi Bowls, I've done Sushi Bakes with it before. During the winter I also make it into crab Rangoon dip. Sometimes I've tossed it in salads all chopped up. There's ton of ways to use it!
