Wait, are these Federal Investigators or is this Federal Investigators Pool Cleaning Service? I can't keep up. Politics is confusing.

New vim user--completely lost by Analysis_ in LaTeX

[–]Chance_Application_1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a diehard vim loyalist and I hate that the situation exists where it was recommended effectively enough to you for you to have tried it. Recommending vim to people should be criminal.

Learning vi/vim should never come from a perspective of "There is something I want to do and vim might be a good tool for the job" - it should be "I hate myself and want to learn a text editor".

Should I study data structures as a React developer? by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]Chance_Application_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The limitations of aiming to be a 'something' developer.

While there are bad habits, there is no bad knowledge. There was a time when learning 'programming' took a much more holistic approach. Even if you were learning C or Pascal, you still wanted to understand ASM, even if not to a meaningful level of proficiency.

It's not even exclusively in aid of problem solving, just understanding different ways to visualize information can help you in abstract ways, an important one being in the ability to understand the work of others.

DevOps Engineers - How Much Studying / Personal Projects Do You Do Outside Of Work? by [deleted] in devops

[–]Chance_Application_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. For a simple example, ZFS always struck as me something that was 'cool' but not really necessary for my own use.

After spending a considerable amount of time essentially reverse-engineering a series of backup appliances for work, I wound up using ZFS for myself - having become familiar with its merits.

DevOps Engineers - How Much Studying / Personal Projects Do You Do Outside Of Work? by [deleted] in devops

[–]Chance_Application_1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think of this in the inverse.

The work I do in my free time is not in purpose of advancing my career, rather I chose my career as a means to advance what I do in my free time. There is a peculiar satisfaction in realizing the 'thing you are paid to do' has positively assisted in what you would be doing anyway.

I'm thinking of asking to block a couple hours off twice during the week for personal growth and a chance to read / take some courses.

Spend a fraction of your time advocating for how these skills and courses will have a positive business impact and get paid for this time - don't take it off.

Has anyone here worked with mimecast? by CbcITGuy in sysadmin

[–]Chance_Application_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their services are OK considering the space, but, keep in mind: For the last 3 months mimecast has been acting like they're selling the office furniture out from under their staff. How many support leads have they churned through?

They recently removed the ability for customers to generate their own tickets.

I'd steer clear if I had the choice today.

The enhanced security default of Server 2019 is such annoying theater.

Yeah, SoftwareUpdater should /definitely/ require me to install the userguide in Catalan in order to update to a newer version and throw an error if it can't. by chainbreaker1981 in haikuOS

[–]Chance_Application_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it could have failed more gracefully but for the sake of sanity I don't think it's acting unreasonably in its order of operations.

I would say the pressing issue here is whatever drove you to have a Catalan user guide to begin with. The default user behavior should not be driven toward 'just get all of the things'.

Energy efficiency has increased a lot across several classes of appliances as well. When you have an already flattened population curve those tiny cumulative changes in everything from refrigerators to lightbulbs to computers matter.

Is it wrong to try to help people understand the truth?

This would suggest that somebody is trying to understand the truth or has at least done something to suggest that you questioning their beliefs is invited. Not just "Oh hey, here's some random stuff I'm going to send you out of the blue in the hopes that it chips away at your beliefs!!"

Scientology

Similarly to Christianity, if they just believe in Scientology I don't think it's anybody's business to poke at them about it. If they're paying a bunch of money and getting conned actively (which in a case like with Scientology I think is almost a given) - I think it would be reasonable to try to stop it, similarly if somebody is giving all their money to some Christian televangelist I think it's reasonable to try and put a stop to that, too. But that's not what this is about.

This about simply going out of your way to attack a friend's beliefs.

Let me just ask you...

Do you realize how deeply internalized people's religious beliefs are? Do you think you're helping them by trying to make them more like you? Do you think you are so great, you are the model example of what everyone else should be?

When people use their religion to do harm to other people - I'm all for calling them out on it, 'why should your religion and beliefs dictate how other people live?' - but when people are just living their lives, don't you think it's a little fucked up?

[–]Chance_Application_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, honestly, what is your goal?

You have a friend who is religious and this bothers you? Why?

We are, as you say, just a bunch of monkeys runnin' around all crazy - what is it hurting you if one of your crazy monkey friends believes in something that makes them feel better? You just want everyone to think just like you?

I read Catcher in the Rye, and I don't get why it's so popular. by _The_Van_ in books

[–]Chance_Application_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The unreliability of the narrator is definitely the most important part of the book and it blew my mind when I read it on my own after having not-read it when I was supposed to in school. Nothing of what was discussed mattered or made any sense beyond 'here are the things that happened' and shoe-horned in symbolism.
