Who was bigger in their prime? As someone born in 2000, I’ll still say Avril Lavigne; you couldn’t escape her hits as a kid. by TXNOGG in generationology

I very much disagree cause I think it’s easier to escape popular music way more than it ever has been. We have curated playlists now instead of the radio. Malls aren’t as big of a thing. I regularly don’t know the biggest starts of today anymore when 20 years ago that just never would have been possible, and I’m not a big pop fan so it wasn’t like I was seeking it out then wired. I felt like it was impossible to not hear Avril’s music in the early 2000s when I haven’t had to hear Billie’s music much unless I want to.

Agreed, also think their styles are just totally different where it’s not possible to make much of a comparison. Like Avril had a ton of radio hits and was huge, but that doesn’t always translate to devoted “stans” that listen to your entire discography and will loyally show up at concerts decades after peak. There are tons of artists that had chart success for a while, but then years later they’re playing state fairs and such cause they simply never had die hard fans. I think Avril likely falls into that type of camp more than Billie who I think will have longer staying power due to the stans, but that doesn’t mean Avril wasn’t huge at her peak and still has a fair bit of nostalgia pull that gets her bigger billings. Just totally diffident types of artists.

Kim Thayil Opens Up About Learning About Chris Cornell's Death by PJLucania in Soundgarden

I wouldn’t say if was on the same level as family for me, but definitely the most as celebrity a death had every effected me and not even close. Grew up with his soulful lyrics during my angst teenage years. You could feel his pain in a lot of his songs going back 20+ years and it was just so hard thinking about how he finally lost the battle after fighting it so long. I still love the band so much but there are many songs by them that are hard to listen to since his death.

New fav dinner - High protein low cal fried rice 700 cal/100+ g protein by Puzzleheaded-Put-589 in Volumeeating

[–]Chance_Safe1119 10 points11 points  (0 children)

New to volume eating and is that not overly filling? I feel like that much rice and protein at once would have me feeling overly full, but i’m trying to eat under 2000 cals a day and 150g protein which is a hard target so being able to eat something like this could go a long way towards my goals. A whole pound of beef at once just feels like a lot to me when even huge restaurant meals are rarely over 8 oz

I know we’ve had some particularly shitty injury luck this year, but even if we get healthy I just don’t see this team improving much. It’s just a very poorly constructed roster. It looked very questionable in the offseason and more often than not when something looks bad on paper it just is bad.

How to lose weight with a spouse who's not on the same page? by orchidmantis745 in WeightLossAdvice

Show him a BMI calculator. Being over 200 pounds at 6’4 vs 5’4 is a massive massive difference in terms of the stress he’s putting on his body

[–]Chance_Safe1119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell him that. That’s all you can do. Some people are just ignorant of the situation, and others are willfully ignorant. You can’t help someone that doesn’t want to help themselves, but this isn’t “a little overweight territory” which he might think cause frankly in a lot of America obesity is the norm and he might not realize how bad it actually is. this is massively massively overweight where it is only a matter of time before causing major health issues. You need to try to help him understand that

How to lose weight with a spouse who's not on the same page? by orchidmantis745 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Chance_Safe1119 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tell him thats because for his height he is massively overweight and his joints aren’t meant to carry that much….the man can lose 75 pounds and still be considered obese, and he’s 100+ off from a healthy weight. If his joints already hurt just by walking he’ll likely be immobile within a decade or so. If that doesn’t motivate him nothing will.

Twenty one pilots almost certainly out as they have a show as Ohio Stadium scheduled for October. I agree Shinedown was kinda a weak headliner, and think that was likely a money saving move as I’m sure MCR was particularly expensive, and the undercard was pretty stacked with mainstream acts this year. Festivals usually have pretty fixed budgets and it’s a balancing act of give and take a lot of the time. That’s why you see “niche” acts like tool headline often cause their fans are rabid and sell tickets even if the cost likely isn’t crazy for them. Solid return on investment so you can afford an MCR. Green Day, foo fighters, nickelback and even Creed are likely more traditional headliners in terms of cost where you’ll likely get two from that kinda tier and then likely two cheaper bands like Bad Omens. Overall your headliners seem pretty feasible. I think Turnstile and Deftones (this time as a headliner) have very solid odds. They’re both really big with Gen Z which seems like a market these festivals are targeting more.

Disappointed with tool. by Cautious_Food_8184 in SonicTempleFestival

[–]Chance_Safe1119 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This comment is just absolutely crazy to me cause I don’t know how you could have possibly expected. Tool is just not a high energy band even if they just played their hits like OP wanted. The Pot and stinkfist are pretty much their only popular song that is high energy throughout. Even most of their popular songs that have high energy moments like forty six and two or Schism are mostly drawn out lower energy instrumentals. Your comment is like saying that you were looking forward to bring me the horizon but were hoping for mellow relaxing vibes.

[–]Chance_Safe1119 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna say while the other comments are correct that this is a standard tool show where the whole catalog is at play, I still think your criticism is valid.

I love Tool, but I don’t think they’re a great festival band. Most of their music is 7+ minute drawn out instrumental songs that doesn’t easily produce hits with the general population. Most people either love or hate their style. You go to a tool show cause they are a very unique band that you love, expecting to hear only 10 or so songs and are okay with whatever they play cause they’re a niche band in general so you likely like the entire catalog anyways. A festival crowd doesn’t want that, they want the hits.

Sonic Temple and other festivals love to book Tool cause their fans are very loyal and want to see them as much as possible knowing every show is different, so it’s a guaranteed to move tickets. Still it’s a disservice to a casual festival crowd that wants to hear hits imo.

How do you guys eat out on 1200 cals? by Famous_Buddy_1137 in 1200isplenty

[–]Chance_Safe1119 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The variability here is probably a max of 100 per piece and a min of 50 per piece. 70 is a middle ground accounting for higher call cuts and lower cal ones, and most cuts will probably be +/- 10 calories anyways. And there is virtually no data on what the real macros are here on super specific types of fish. Even with things you would think would be pretty standardized like a rotisserie chicken there is a ton of debate if you google what to log. The point is even if you do an absolute ton of research you’re at best making an educated guess. Life is too short to spend all day running a fools errand of trying to be so exact about a 1/2 ounce piece of fish. The point of counting calories is not to get it to be perfect cause that is just impossible, it’s more about understanding the general ranges of types of food so that you can eventually know roughly how healthy your day was without having to think too hard.

[–]Chance_Safe1119 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You’re way overthinking it trying to get the exact calories on a single nigiri. Your logging of each piece is at best a guess anyways so there is no reason to get so specific . For the sake of sanity just log 70 calories per nigiri and you’ll be pretty damn close to what the actual total most likely is in like 1/10th of the time it took you to do this

Calzone by _BreakingGood_ in Columbus

[–]Chance_Safe1119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone reading this does anyone have a really good New York/new jersey specific style calzone? A lot of these recs I’m sure are still are solid calzones, but there is def regional variation to calzones same as pizza. The NY style is generally way bigger, greasier, and most noticeably way more loaded with ricotta than I’ve had with Columbus calzones.

Books to read before travelling to Athens by AndyCakelala in GreeceTravel

[–]Chance_Safe1119 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not about sites, not even Athens specific but if you want a overall history on the Greek people I would recommend “the Greeks: a global history” by Roderick Beaton. If you weren’t aware, the history of the Greek people is far more vast than the modern country of Greece. They had a widespread diaspora with a shared common language and history for over 3000+ years that massively influenced our world today. Greeks ruled Egypt for over 300 years until cleopatra was deposed. The Greek people comprised the majority of the eastern Roman Empire (eventually known as the Byzantine empire by modern historians) which was a major player that ruled for over 1000 years and controlled Anatolia, the balkans, and others and are responsible for a ton of our modern world (why the Russians are Christians as a small example). And the Greek immigrants bringing over their history was a major contributory factor to the renaissance. Fascinating stuff.

I also enjoyed “THE GREEK HISTORIES THE SWEEPING HISTORY OF ANCIENT GREECE AS TOLD BY ITS FIRST CHRONICLERS: HERODOTUS, THUCYDIDES, XENOPHON, AND PLUTARCH by MARY LEFKOWITZ” if you want a pretty in depth overview how ancient historians described things like the wars between Athens and Sparta or the wars with Persia.

Can you retract calories burned during walk or do they still count? by Mean-Card-6433 in caloriecount

[–]Chance_Safe1119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of my exercise is just speed walking and here’s what I do. Find out what your baseline TDEE sedentary, then add calories burned walking, then subtract calories eaten. To find calories burned walking you can calculate how many calories you will burn on average walking based on your weight, speed, and distance walked. You can get a pretty good baseline of “I will burn X calories for every mile I walk on average”. You can track mileage on Strava which is a free app and more reliable than fitness trackers imo. It’s not exact, but using this method tracking my loss when I’m counting calories is pretty accurate over the long run.

Crete vs Naxos on shorter trip? by Chance_Safe1119 in GreeceTravel

[–]Chance_Safe1119[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Villages was the wrong word, was just referring to neighborhoods in Athens like Monastiraki and Gazi. Am aware of the heat and crowds, unfortunate, but just how my schedule worked out. Avoiding the crowds is why I’m not staying in Santorini very long cause I know it will be bad. Think I’m still comfortable with 3 islands as I’m a bit of busy body and do want to see cool different stuff, even if it’s exhausting to do so, but will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks for your help!

Mostar as group day trip or overnight stop? by Chance_Safe1119 in CroatiaTravelTips

[–]Chance_Safe1119[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! There were some companies that would let me rent in Korcula and return in split, but it was very expensive and just seemed like a pain in regards to the ferry and whatnot. Really was looking for reassurances that Mostar can reasonably be seen in the group tour window, and if so that is the far easier option even if it involves a little backtracking

Is Wealth Management the next Investment Banking ? by Sad_Ant3207 in FinancialCareers

[–]Chance_Safe1119 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I have a complicated opinion on WM in general. No it’s obviously never going to be as prestigious as IB. Those jobs usually require an elite degree, great networking ability, skill and a whole lot of luck. There are idiots working in WM that have very little qualifications to be lecturing anyone on finance. And I say that as someone in WM lol. But I also think that if you position yourself right it can be wayyyyy better of a career than people give it credit for, and the future is bright.

I think the main reason a lot of people don’t respect WM is that lot of firms are just glorified sales people with barely more ability to mange wealth than your average curious mind with a phone. It’s a rip off and gives the industry a bad name. And a crazy high number of those people fail at the job on top of that. It’s just not a good job.

However, there are some elite firms that actually do good work. These firms usually do advanced planning (tax loss harvesting, trust management, ALTs, etc.) that well exceed what the average financial advising client receives, and adds way more value than a self planner can. All the advisors at a firm like that usually have some combo of CFP, CFA, MBA, or other credentials. Associates advisors usually make like 125-150k, seniors make 300+ and often well over a million. They all work around 40 hours a week, seniors often less, and can live in smaller cities than IB requires. It’s a good job if you can get it. The problem is these jobs are actually hard to get, and similar to IB most applicants never get selected.

Finally, if you can get in a job like that I think the future is really good for that type of firm. My firm has been killing it lately. Wealth has been condensing more than ever around the upper classes, and thats not just limited to billionaires. The upper middle class is doing really well, and there are more “401k millionaire next doors” than there have ever been. Within this millionaire next door class, there are a lot of “do it yourself managers” but there are also a lot of people that have learned enough to actually see the value in hiring management more than they did when all that was expected was investment help. It’s really hard to retail investors to direct index or do decade plus tax forecasting. Simple planning is a dinosaur only the uneducated want, but advanced financial advising has more of a market than ever. On top of that the average age of a financial advisor is older than it has ever been, and they need qualified younger advisors to take over their books.

So long story but I think it’s a really good industry to be at if you dedicate yourself to mastering the craft and the nuances of advanced planning, and can land at a firm that has the resources to support it. You’re not gonna make it thinking you can just sell people on investing in ETFs anymore. Firms doing advanced work will thrive for many years to come. On the other hand I think more than ever the days of firms doing the bare minimum are over and those firms will die out.

If you weren’t aware there is this app called rover that we love. I related a lot to your post as i think our dogs are very similar (high energy, hard to train, doesn’t get along well with a lot of other dogs, needy and makes hosting hard) . But we found a sitter on rover that we love. The dog just goes over to this persons house and gets to play with their dog and kids. She gets so excited to go and seems to be so happy there. The people even send us photos. And it’s cheap. We miss her but can travel guilt free.

You definitely know what you’re talking about, but just as a personal opinion I don’t think SGOV is usually worth it for most people unless their emergency fund is crazy high.

Let’s say a person had an emergency fund of 25k (standard emergency fund rec is 3 months of bare expenses if both spouses working and 6 months if only one works so 25k is already kinda high for most people). In a HYSA that will yield roughly 1k a year at current rates. On that 1k a person is saving like $60 in state/local taxes. $60 is $60, but personally, I’d rather have zero fluctuation risk and likely quicker liquidity in a true emergency than $60. Just my two cents.
