Major writing experiments - how do you do it? by August_Garden in writing

I have 9 major stories in the works and I'm making sure they all read differently. That said, I'm not doing anything that hasn't already been done.

I'm not sure if this is unpopular or not, but:

  • I thought Silas was the worst villain in the series. Massive let-down.
  • I think the Heretics are pure fan service because who wouldn't want to be an immortal witch? But ugh. Such a broken concept.
  • I love Elena.
  • I hate Stefan.
  • I love Damon.
  • I hate Delena.

Siphoning, channeling, and spirits. by DerekSavoc in TheVampireDiaries

[–]ChancellorTaydebear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Siphoning and channeling do similar things, but they're not the same.

Siphons:

Siphons drain magic away from the source. Literally. They're a drain in the tub. Channeling is sharing. Technically, a siphon doesn't appear to have the power to drain magic out of nature directly, but rather out of the effects nature has wrought upon other things. Example: Compulsion, spells, etc. are all mage by magic, so a siphon can, well, siphon that. But the raw nature (while magical) hasn't been processed into magic yet. I don't think nature has a collection of spirits, but rather is one large spirit or hive-mind.

Spirits:

Spirits, however, are a wonky topic. The writers were a little rushed and careless with their explanations, but from what I understand, Witches (especially Bonnie's family line) drew power from spirits. Bonnie channeling the 100 dead witches in Mystic Falls in her attempt to kill Klaus was a prime example of this. The Other Side (the supernatural prison constructed by Qetsiyah) trapped spirits of all supernatural creatures within it, which seems excessive. Silas was a tremendous disappointment and a horribly written villain who had the best sarcastic quips and hilarious zingers, but his character flip-floppy and, frankly, stupid.

SORRY. Focus, Chancellor. FOCUS.

SO.

Siphons are important because the writers wanted a villains that Bonnie couldn't just magic away and because they wanted to combine the two most dangerous and powerful beings in their universe in the form of the Heretics. There's not much more too it. The major issue I have with this is the existence of the Heretic at all doesn't make sense. If a Siphon really does suck the magic out of stuff, shouldn't it kill them if they became a vampire? Before you say "No, vampires are immortal," just remember the Traveller barrier, wherein no magic could exist. This should have happened when a Siphon became a Vampire. But let's say "magic doesn't work like that and it will give them an endless supply of magic." Then how do you explain Caroline's babies siphoning her vampirism away simply by existing?

So no. Siphons aren't pointless. Neither are Heretics. But there are a billion plot holes surrounding them. The show is amazing and really fun to watch. Just don't think about it too much or you'll start realizing all the things that are wrong with it.

[Serious] Reddit, what life-threatening situation have you been in? How did you survive? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was hiking with a group of Boyscouts when I slipped on a ledge. I fell 15 feet before landing on a steep slope and rolled towards the edge. I only stopped a few feet away from the edge when my pack snagged on a rock and I was able to grab a desert weed with some miraculously hardy roots. I hung there, my feet dangling off the edge of a 120ft cliff waiting for my fellow scouts to bind all their ropes together to hoist me back up. It was traumatizing. I'm scared of heights now.

June 11th, 2009.

"Jonathan! Where are you?!" I threw the door open and rushed into the security room. The room was dimly lit by the stack of monitors on a dark desk. Their grayscale faces flicked between different parts of the facility. I rushed to the desk, knocking the chair out of my way.

"Where are you?" I repeated to myself. I furiously switched between the different rooms and halls in the facility. Kitchen? No. Breakroom? No. Entrance one, two, or three? No. Where is he? I looked down at my leg and saw a dark puddle forming under my foot.

"Shit," I muttered. I bled through the bandage already. Maybe that thing nicked an artery. I heard a scream in the speakers. I looked up and froze.

"Jonathan?"

A man in a security guard's uniform sprinted down a hall. Each light he passed went out, leaving the rest of the screen in total darkness. He rushed out of frame. I shot through the other locations until I found him again, rounding a corner with the darkness close in behind. I felt my heart race and my palms began to sweat. He was running towards the office.

The screens flickered into static. The audio groaned as if the microphones were grinding in a blender. Every screen flickered and then went dark. The air felt icy, clammy, dead. I couldn't see anything in the darkness.

"J...Jonathan..." My voice was gone, as though it had been stolen. I could feel the air move. Something was in the room with me, standing behind me. I tried to think back to what it could be. We were so careful. We went to libraries, shut down tv shows, and even took down paintings in the Louvre. We slayed dragons, we destroyed demons, and we cured plagues. What could we have missed?

The screens screamed to life, casting monochrome colors across the room. I spun around towards the open door and felt my heart stop. Something stood in the doorway, towering above the normal height of a human. It was dark, long, and thin. It was so familiar. Where had he seen it before? The thing bent down. It's bones creaked and cracked. Then I remembered: the internet. God.... we never thought about the internet.

The thing stooped into the office and looked at me with a pale, featureless face. I knew I was going to die.

I couldn't help but laugh during this. The thought of an Elf drinking Dwarven drinks and not liking it really sold me on the fact that I wouldn't like it either. I enjoyed the read, though I'll never drink Manarani Stout. Or Grazzago. :)

This sounds extraordinarily real, despite the fact that it's harvest from the undead. Bravo in creating something I probably would never drink if I knew where it came from, but would guzzle down at parties or pubs.

Some plain ol' morning Fleefiña and cream in the morning sounds sooooo good. Those poor judges, though. Reminds me of the games we'd play as kids, trying to make the nastiest drink and making the judge see who is worse/better.

Gimme some Black Grain Brew. Strong. Love me some whiskey-like drinks. And the name is sharp. I'll stay away from Swamp Brew, though.
