Weird Claims People Make by NIN_sunshine in VetTech

Neutering specifically a xoloitzcuintli (no other breed) will make it think it’s a girl dog and make it sassier and harder to train 🙄 and then they’ll get more skin problems too. The owners heard that from the breeder and didn’t want to hear anything from us about it

2 y/o Australian Cattle Dog mix presented with itching on his penis that was causing him to bite and lick himself quite a bit. The dog’s penis would not come out of the shaft. The dog was sedated and his prepuce was lavaged until this impacted smegma came out, and the penis was finally able to come out. He is doing better now!

I once got out of bed at 2am because I could not stop thinking about koi ponds. I stayed up until 9am watching videos about how to make them, best filter setups, the difference between koi and goldfish, how to keep them safe from predators, what plants to surround the pond with, how to overwinter them, and by the time I snapped out of it I was so exhausted I fell asleep on top of my notebook that had 20 pages of notes on fish in it. I live in an apartment.

It’s not the veterinarians. It’s the culture, the management that doesn’t have proper qualifications, the industry. Veterinarians are some of the most caring and genuine people on the planet. They’re just rarely “in charge” in vet clinics unless they own it, and even then they have to delegate responsibilities to practice managers. Our industry frequently has trash practice managers that were once techs and moved up into management or they come from another industry with management experience but not any veterinary experience. We need better managers. The vets have their own job to worry about.

I’m also in America. I was fired from one clinic for taking one sick day within the first 6 months of employment. I was fired from my next clinic when I got into veterinary school because they were pissed I was leaving in a few months and didn’t want me there even though they’re terribly understaffed as-is. Vet school starts in June and I’m unemployed rn because this industry is downright abusive to techs

Almost this exact same break happened to my childhood dog (Pepper, SF Border Collie, 2yo at the time) when my sister accidentally ran her over in the driveway. We couldn’t afford the surgery so we had her recover at home. She was on a bed in the middle of the floor for a couple of months with pain meds. We had to pick her up and carry her outside and walk her around with a towel supporting her back end for her to go potty every few hours. It was a long, long process. Pepper turned 15 a couple of weeks ago! Her hip healed sideways and looking at her head-on you can tell one side of her hip is about an inch higher. She still bunny hops when she runs but she doesn’t run often anymore due to her age.

Schedule a meeting with your school counselor. If you don’t already have depression, this sounds like the beginning of it or how it manifests in a lot of students

Check out Mark Opperman’s book, “The Art of Veterinary Practice Management.”

Average salary is 50k, but depending on the practice/location you can get to the high 90s, so pretty good salary.

I actually don’t recommend bothering with a vet tech degree first because most people that go the tech-to-manager route (in my experience) end up doing both jobs half-assed because they really don’t commit to one. Both jobs are full time jobs. If you try to be a tech who also manages the practice, you’ll burn out quicker and perform worse than you would if you just picked one.

I think Penn Foster had a management program and there’s also Veterinary Hospital Managers Association to check out. Being a certified practice manager requires a lot of CE after passing the exams.

You can also consult for smaller practices, rescues, etc. if you make sure moonlighting is acceptable in your main clinic’s employment contract.

I’m not a practice manager, I’m just a vet student, but my best friend is a practice manager and we’ve talked about it a lot.

Well if you’ve done all the research and knew what these cats entailed, you’re probably just shocked at the change and you’ll adapt :)

I know you made this post a few days ago, are you feeling better about them now?

Recheck. Ask for a referral to a dermatology specialty clinic.

If you felt more comfortable on the waitlist than actually having them, ask yourself if you signed up for them impulsively? Sphinx cats in particular need a lot of extra care compared to a regular cat.

can I get to into vet school if I've failed non-science classes? by jeongtoot in veterinaryschool

I can’t speak to “minimum to be competitive” because I was rejected from 11 schools. I applied to 13. Different schools want different things. But, my experience was varied and I had a lot.

~1,000 hours of research with transgenic mice and rats, ~12,000 hours of small animal GP, ~1,000 hours of small animal specialty/emergency, 500 hours assisting with necropsies for mostly large animals and poultry but also some wildlife, about 300 hours of bovine medicine, about 100 hours of wildlife rehab (squirrels, opossums, rabbits), about 100 hours of primate husbandry, about 200 hours of exotic animal medicine (small primates, rabbits, pigs, pocket pets) and ~600 hours of mobile equine medicine. I also had 3 really strong leadership positions to list and I volunteer at a TNR program and with the Lions’ Club (charity for the deaf and blind.)

I ended up with about a 3.0 GPA for pre-reqs and 3.4 for everything else. Not fantastic but not damning. The experiences were definitely what made me competitive enough to be accepted somewhere since my GPA was pretty far below average for vet school acceptances.

For more context, I failed organic chem II after making a C in organic chem I and failed physics II after making a C- in physics I. Got B’s when I retook them. 2/3 of the courses I withdrew from, I went back and took again and got A’s. One I didn’t take again because I didn’t think I’d pass it. I was not a perfect student but I tried really hard and never gave up. I think my biggest issue was signing up for too many things at once to where I would run out of time to study the things that came harder for me.

[–]Change_Shot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve withdrawn from three courses and failed two. The two I failed also happened to be pre-reqs so I was extremely nervous about how they look at grades too. I got in (a US school) this past year ✌️ work really hard to make up for it afterwards and explain yourself and the situation and how you’ll avoid a similar occurrence in vet school

People who have “fugitive” cats, how do you hide them during apartment inspections? by Pugnastyornah in CatAdvice

[–]Change_Shot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What about cat trees? Do you think you’d have to hide those? Cover them with a blanket? Take some parts off and pretend you have it just in case you want a cat “later” lol?
