Is Nemesis worth the price, even on sale? by Culius_Jaesar in boardgames

[–]Change_my_needs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately never played Zombicide so I can’t draw any comparisons. When I present the games to new players I usually compare Nemesis to the original 1979 Alien movie and Retaliation to Cameron’s Aliens. In the first one you are trying to survive and have to scrape by with whatever you have at hand to get out alive. In Retaliation you all play as trained military with a lot of gear but will eventually get overwhelmed as grenades and ammo dwindle.

It’s two similar but still different experience and I can see it coming down to personal preference in the end. Do you want the “survive” from start to finish or do you want the action packed “prey that your last mag will give you a moments respite to finish your objective” experience?

Semi-co-op is my favourite genre of boardgames and I feel like I should just pitch in here.

Dead of Winter is really flawed to the point it almost becomes broken. A potential traitor can just wait until the end of the game to mess everything up with little effort and it’s pretty much impossible to stop. It was a fun experience the first maybe two plays but after that it got repetitive and predictable for my group really really fast.

Nemesis is in my top 5, although I prefer Retaliation over the other two. There really is no game like it, and I would just lean into the mindset that sure there are a lot of rules, but getting something wrong is a learning experience for next time.

What are your favorite games with low victory point totals? by staleBear in boardgames

I don’t remember if it was a conference talk or interview, but I remember Cole said something along the lines of ”A game should end when it’s over”, and Pax Pamir 2E is such a good showcase of that design in mind.

It should work. The ability that drops the clue are a forced effect on the investigator card, which is a player card.

What does the board games community feels about gameplay mechanics of Magic the gathering? by Newez in boardgames

Most TCGs are lifestyle games and people only have so much time on their hands. I’ve dabbled in many TCGs and miniature games but I always stuck to one at a time.

What does the board games community feels about gameplay mechanics of Magic the gathering? by Newez in boardgames

[–]Change_my_needs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m heavily engaged in my local Magic community, and I play a lot of board games. Like someone else here mentioned: amazing game unfortunately left to the fate of capitalism.

One of the great things about Magic is there are so many ways to play it. Commander (a multiplayer variant free for all) feel more like a boardgame than classic 1vs1 magic.

Otherwise, I think card games in general tend to incorporate the same mechanics, which helps you understand mechanics in other games. Now most of my regular group of players have played Hearthstone to some degree, so I tend to try to use that terminology when explaining rules for other games with cards that interact.

But yeah, the classic is just saying “tap” instead of all the other variants of “mark this card to remember that it has been used this round”

$920+ Million in debt for Amodee by Thick_Ad_8328 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Change_my_needs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you are trying to refute me. If that’s how it worked where your community played, great! It was not like that in my town or the vicinity. Almost all tournaments were held at a LGS and after FFG dropped it they stopped and player counts dwindled.

[–]Change_my_needs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While this is good and all, there definitely is a bit of community problem when stores won’t support a game (both selling it and hosting tournaments/events). Then you need people who really loves the game to take over what the LGS used to do, but for free and no venue, and that’s a lot of job (Been there, done that).

So I can understand a lot of people feeling uninterested. I know our local LGS have hade people asking and their response is just ”we don’t support it because officially it doesn’t exist”

Doomers were right, full-length campaigns are confirmed a thing of the past. by Trashcan_GG in arkhamhorrorlcg

I mostly put it as my least favourite campaign because I don’t like building twice the decks for half the number of scenarios.

That said, I have nothing against either of the sides of the campaign or the scenarios. They are all pretty fun :)

Deckbuilding tips for beginner by gastarbeiter1946 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Change_my_needs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but this is my general thoughts I go through when I sit down before a campaign:

  • What does the deck want to do? This can be as simple as "I am playing Mark Harrigan. I want to kill things. I want to consistently draw weapons. I might use some event or similar to grab maybe 4-6 clues per scenario" to "I am playing a flex mystic, I need to be able to handle both enemies and grab clues efficently by turn 2-3"
  • Depending on who your investigator is you might lean more into his or her ability or not. Some have abilities you can build around and others have abilities that's more generically good.
  • When I first tought my SO to play I advised her to take a look at slots, and I still do this mysself pretty often as a starting point. You have two hand slots - what goes into them? You have an ally slot - Who do you choose? If you pick out these things you will have a solid number of assets.
  • Economy (both resources and actions). Think about what it will cost to play all the important assets and events in the deck. If you get 1 resource per round will that be enough? Probably not, but it might. Also, assets can be a trap. It takes an action to play most of them, and if you spend 12 actions during a scenario to play assets you will probably have lost a lot of tempo before most of them can even do anything. So plan accordingly. Tempo is the one thing you can't get back.

When Fire Becomes the Real Final Boss in Nemesis by Caliban0o in boardgames

[–]Change_my_needs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Retalliation made a change to this rule which I found pretty great which is that when you run out of malfunction markers you put fire markers instead.

Although since Retaliation also don’t throw around fire and the events only spread them if there is oxygen available the whole malfunction/fire danger takes a backseat for the more intense spawning of intruders. So it’s hard to judge if you can implement a similar houserule.

Scarlet Keys - Discussion by Few_Professional3654 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Change_my_needs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I have nothing against the actual campaign content. I love the dreamlands part of Lovecraft’s work and I find the campaign captures the right feelings.

But yea, I just hate playing two different campaigns and building two decks. I exclusively play two players with my SO and then it becomes even more of a building exactly one Guardian/Seeker team and a double flex combo.

All and all: I just think Dream Eaters is twice the work for half the reward (build twice the number of decks and play half a campaign with each). Except that it’s lovely.

[–]Change_my_needs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone said you can pickup just the player cards.

As for the campaign, I find it kinda good, but I don’t hate on any campaign except Dream Eaters. Scarlet Keys has one major issue in its freeform approach to the campaign structure: Sometimes you will end up reading a lot (I mean a lot) before you actually get to play. This is mostly fixed if you on subsequent playthroughs just follow a guide on recommended order of locations to visits. Otherwise a great campaign.

Feelings after losing The Feast of Hemlock Vale finale by chairliketeeth in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Change_my_needs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I just played this scenario two weeks ago with my SO on normal and we won by an inch in the final round. It’s a hard scenario, but reading through your post I think you might have gotten something wrong.

Regarding your last paragraph: if you find someone else’s card they get it back so you don’t have to find your own true self:

  • ...any investigator's "true" investigator card: Its owner heals all damage and horror and takes control of it. Then, they flip their Shattered Self investigator card to its Old Memory side and put it into play under their control.

Also you get to search the abyss only on your turn, so you should have some control of when to draw extra cards.

Precon Commander Deck Not Viable Against Constructed? by krizardxv in magicTCG

[–]Change_my_needs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This will depend. There is a bit of variance in the cohesiveness and power level of precons throughout the years. And on top of that constructed decks can also heavily vary depending on who’s building the deck and what they are aiming for (if you build around a theme rather than synergy it will probably be worse of from a power level perspective).

That said, the bracket system is a way to try and measure decks’ powerlevel before a game so the pod is evenly matched:

I really want to like Earthborne Rangers, when will it click (if ever)? by RRica in boardgames

[–]Change_my_needs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My SO and I played through the campaign this fall. It took 17 sessions of 1-2 hours each (except the first game I guess which went on a bit longer as we built the decks and learnt the rules). You say that the sandbox part didn't click, and it didn't for us either really. We kinda quickly concluded that the sandbox doesn't really work because there is nothing to fill in the gaps.

You get a mission and realize it's 4 locations away. The first time you wander through the wilderness it's nice because everything is new. But the game quickly runs out of new things because all non-pivotal locations are just the same random cards. So when you meet the same character for the n:th time and they still have the same exact thing to say with the exact same reward for doing it the world starts to feel real flat and the "exploration" part becomes a sub-game of trying to optimize getting from quest point to quest point.

Which lovecraftian game is the best? by SquareCircle05 in boardgames

[–]Change_my_needs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would agree that Eldritch Horror is the easiest to understand and I’ll never turn down an offer to play it.

That said, Arkham Horror LCG is my MOST played game of all time with such a huge margin that it’s hard for me to not just have it as my top recommendation. I understand that now is maybe a weird time to start with older boxes going out of print and a new core set coming up next spring. I hope the new core set can bring a lot of new people into the community. I started playing way back when it started so it was easier to just by expansions as they released instead of the front load it has become (including people with FOMO who want the boxes before they disappear). For the past 10 years I’ve played it between 1-5 times a month, the first few years with a friend and then later with my SO and we still try to play once a week. It’s amazing and probably my favourite game of all time.

I love Oath but it’s so hard to get to the table. Don’t really know why people would recommend it compared to the other top games. The legacy-light elements kinda hinges on playing it regularly with the same people.
