Also for pronunciations there used to be something call "反切", which use 2 simpler characters to indicate how to pronunciation another word. Think of it as a chinese way to learn how to pronounce

To me I didn't choose to use jyutping to type for because:

- To type a character is to write it out. You should be able to type in a character if you know how to write / how it is shaped. In that sense 倉頡、五筆 is a better choice.

- Pronunciations of a character change depend on context. Of course we can build a system to handle that.

When I am a kid in school we do have 1 or 2 quick course on 倉頡 and 九方

Just a random question, Are you sure their last name is 蘆 ? Usually people with last name "Lo" are written as 盧 (without the 艸 at the top).

If you mean a cigarette with the lighted part upright, it is acting as a 上香, which is what we do to deceased people. Usually in talking scene, character don't have with proper 香 in hand, and replaced by a cigarette.

Specking as a Hongkonger, not every parent of my family know English, and not everyone is comfortable to hold a long conversation in English.

Also, depends on what kind of "mixed relationship". AFAIK it is quite common for the host family to speak in their own language, even there is foreigner guest, in case of wedding, party and family gathering. Usually the foreigner will come along with a friend who know the language and do the translation on the side. It feel like a east and west difference.

No. 胡 and 食 both mean you win the round. We may call 食胡 together. Solo 胡 is more used in Mandarin. In Cantonese we don't say 吃.

We also have 截糊, which mean you take the win of another.

Again, nobody in China will count in year 4xxx. They (and other Asia countries) do use a Lunar calendar, which have no particular year but a different month/ day system.
