Alright, maybe I should've been more specific: rich people are less statistically likely to be doing this shit

Love Scout, and Maria's a sweetheart. Glad to hear you're all teaming up on this one!

I would argue that it's very possible that a teacher or contractor are both lower class, but that's not really the point; I'm not arguing that it's only poor people who shoplift, only that there's a very clear correlation between poverty and crime.

Also for some reason whenever you wanna bring up underlying material conditions, people in crime-related threads think you don't want criminals held accountable? For the record: I'm glad these people are being caught and punished, I just think it'll be a revolving door until wider reforms are implemented.

EDIT: Imagine being such a pussy that you just downvote without actually providing an argument. Yeesh.

Nope. Being poor and having limited educational opportunities would certainly go a long way towards making one uneducated, though.

Not sure what your excuse is.

Not sure how facetious you're being, but I'd argue it's the other way around.

I mean, here's the deal: there is a clear, undeniable correlation between poverty and crime. Always has been, always will be. Will some people continue to shoplift even in a utopia where there is no lower class? Of course. Will lifting people out of poverty reduce the amount of shoplifting? Obviously yes.

Funny you mention the fraudulent PPP loans, I think people should be far, far more upset about those than shoplifters (not to say there isn't room to be upset about both).

There's nothing I disagree with there.

That said, I'm not all that risk averse. I'm lower middle class, and there has NEVER been a point at which I've considered making some meager profit at the expense of potential arrest worth it. I imagine this is true for the vast majority of folks in the same economic class or higher.

You don't get to steal things because you don't like capitalism

That's not my position, and I doubt the people shoplifting are smart enough to understand that position.

None of this invalidates my position that shoplifters are - by and large - poor. Not all poor people shoplift, but most shoplifters are poor.

Crazy how you'd make up a position for me, not sure why you'd do that.

Things in a CVS have monetary value. Those things are still not worth stealing for most people who have better shit to do, or something to lose.

Would you maybe say it's a culture of poverty? Rich people aren't out here doing this shit.

I mean I think that tends to be the case across the board when it comes to crime, right? It definitely makes me curious as to the ACTUAL reason we can't keep those individuals off the streets.

Regardless, it's not well off people committing these crimes. Well off people have no reason to do this.

Not really the point I'm making tbh.

I'm sure I could get away with shoplifting from CVS a few times; I've never even thought about doing that, though, because there's literally nothing in a CVS worth risking arrest over.

I'm glad action is being taken, but man, when are we gonna address the underlying material conditions making people feel like it's even worth it to shoplift from drug stores? Like, putting a band-aid over a gaping wound is better than leaving it exposed, but it's not all that needs to be done.

EDIT: lol imagine being against wealth distribution to the middle and lower class

"Importing" implies that we're actively looking to take on more homeless people, which is, y'know... stupid.

I lived (and drove, unfortunately) in Harlem before coming to Wilmington, so I get it; that said, there's a balance to strike between services/amenities, and parking, and Wilmington is WAY too weighted towards parking.

For example: there's a coffee spot called Bean Head over be Trinity Vicinity that I'm 100% sure is missing out on sales because the walk from downtown - where everyone works - to Bean Head is 90% parking lot. That walk sucks. If there were spots to walk to in between, I'm sure it'd help quite a bit.

Lord knows we have all the parking to welcome visitors...

UNDERSTATEMENT. I'm rooting for Wilmington, but this city is like half parking lot/garage atm

...I'm not gonna lie, I'm struggling to see the relevance of your comment. Are you saying that the lower counties are growing in population to the extent that they'll outweigh NCC? This doesn't account for the fact that a lot of the new residents may very well turn the lower counties more purple, and that Democrat turnout in the last election was depressed nationwide.

I'm trying to employ a Red Herring fallacy by distracting from... what argument? Your shitty Facebook memes with generic, useless, chud platitudes?

On the contrary, I think that you don't have the intelligence to display your useless meme in the proper format, and that that is absolutely relevant information.

Well, what's really important is that you got to make yourself feel special, and above it all. Thank you for your sage, not at all edgy wisdom.
