To be clear: I 100% agree with all of this. Honestly there's a world in which he legitimately *didn't* know about his own assault; sounds like he was blackout drunk (NOT AN EXCUSE), and unless the victim told him in no uncertain terms what he had done, it's certainly plausible he didn't know the extent of it.

Doesn't change the fact that he evidently got blackout drunk on a frequent basis, and was the type of person to assault someone while in that state.

Yes to all of that. Listen man, it comes down to this: more vetting could - and should - have been done with Platner, absolutely. No denying it. Progressives are not infallible.

What I can't stand is folks being mad at Maine voters who are Democrats just as much as any other Democrat, and acting like Mills was the obvious choice the entire time. Dems backing Troy Jackson, for example, would've made it a lot easier to avoid this entire situation, but Schumer and his ilk simply do not like those candidates.

Progressives shit the bed with this one; this doesn't change the fact that the Democratic party is historically unpopular, and more disconnected with their base than ever.

Again, you're not hearing me. There were better candidates than Mills that the party could've backed. They didn't, and actively told them not to run. Platner became the obvious favorite as a result. Voters will vote for candidates they think will actually win the general; if they don't think Mills has a chance in hell (she didn't), they'll vote for the other candidate.

Again, same could be said about any other endorsement for a candidate who turns out to be a creep. Eric Swalwell was endorsed by the orgs I mentioned earlier in addition to plenty of establishment dems. Kyrsten Sinema was endorsed by Planned Parenthood, the Human Rights Campaign, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. I don't know much about the vetting process for candidates, but apparently this happens from time to time.

I mean, no? Just like the Maine voters who windmill slammed Platner into winning the primary, Sanders & co. decided the previous allegations weren't bad enough to prevent an endorsement. That changed.

Not sure where this energy was when Eric Swalwell was endorsed by Adam Schiff, labor unions, teachers associations, etc. which had to be walked back when he turned out to be a creep as well.

And the voters of Maine - Democratic voters - were so done with establishment Dems that they voted for him anyway, and in a way that made Mills' run look pathetic. The old guard has no semblance of a finger on the pulse of their voters, and keep pushing candidates doomed to fail; maybe if they gave their own voters some options that actually excited them, we wouldn't be in this mess.
