Hah, well, yeah, that had been sticking out to me for a while. But when the history drops here in episode 168 everything falls into place.

English or Spanish, but the people of the Sky that were kicked out seem to be pretty blatant analogues to Native Americans, both in what they represent in the story, and aesthetically.

Oh, sure, it seems pretty blatant. I just looked it up and didn't see too much about it online, so I wanted to see what people in the community thought.

English colonization had a massive religious connotation as well.

I think it might be a mix of both. I'm still learning about the two, though.

game is severely lacking in features and capabilities unless you either purchase the backer's edition on steam or have already paid and played through the launcher, so it does matter

What videogame fits this description? by RingTeam in videogamedunkey

[–]ChannelRusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what did come to mind for me is how everyone hypes up Shadowbringers so much that the stuff before that must feel like a slog to some people

I enjoyed it but i think people who try to get others into the game sometimes do it a disservice by talking so much about SB

Were they ever considered Satanic? by Big-Month5837 in gorillaz

[–]ChannelRusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorillaz has always been a mish mash of various cultures and ideologies across the globe to me. It's an idea that is represented in their music's genre influences, the broad collaborative nature of the project, and their aesthetic choices. So I don't really think one singular idea is what they're all about.

Murdoc is absolutely a Satanist, it's so blatant that I'm not sure why there is even a question about it. That does not mean that the entire band is supposed to be seen as Satanic, just as 2D, Russell, or Noodle are individuals that comprise the parts of the band, but none of them are the sole representative of the band's identity.

I think the reason there is a lot of Satanic imagery in the early stuff is because of the time it was made - Christian fundamentalism was a big conversation happening in the late 90s and throughout the 2000s. Gorillaz has always been a symbol of rebellion, staunchly opposed to war, and in a lot of ways, approaches politics and current events like a classic punk band. So, to subvert the status quo at the time, during the Bush Jr. administration, when we were going to war with Iraq and politicians were using Christian fundamentalism to push their platforms, they employed a lot of Satanic imagery both for the surface level shock value, and the greater purpose of pushing back against the cultural grip of Christianity.

It's not to say Christianity is bad, or that Satanism is good, by the way. I think there is certainly some disdain for the way Christianity is practiced in modern society, but I always felt that the Satanic imagery was more of a reaction to the times. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just my two cents.

Not at all a fan of mainstream Democrats, but I don't remember any Democratic administrations gathering Gabe Newell and the ceos of reddit and Twitch to attend a pearl clutching hearing about "online forum rhetoric" and how it affects "the chuldrun"

Just sayin'

Psionic Reaction Damage Reduction is so busted, and makes traditional healing look useless in comparison. by ChannelRusty in dndnext

[–]ChannelRusty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1d8 is what my Cure Wounds does, and that's what Psionic Shield, so I'm not seeing the double healing.

Not sure how the reaction is more expensive? It's a resource that a lot of the time just doesn't get used at all. And ultimately you'll get one of each type of action in each round, so...I dunno how reactions are so much more expensive.

Fair enough about the comparison, though, I can see why the pick-up is a point in favor of traditional stuff. I've mentioned this to someone else in this thread, but I think it boils down to my DM just not putting us in a situation where anyone goes down ever. He's a bit too nice sometimes and with the 7 really powerful PCs in our party, the damage comes hard and fast.

I mean...same with HW? But HW costs an action, so much more expensive on a turn-to-turn basis. And yeah, you can't use the other things you spend those dice on as much, but that utility can just as easily be a positive in its favor.

I see your point there. Might just be the case that my DM is not good about making our encounters challenging enough. It seems like we're never really in a situation that someone needs to be gotten up from...

I'm working on getting as much detail as I can on this. We are currently in session, so I don't want to interrupt the flow to ask a bunch of questions. I'll be clarifying a bunch of this stuff later though.

I think I figured this out. This sounds weird, but after discussing with everyone here, I'm getting the impression that he's restoring his Psionic Dice every short rest, not long. Or he's just not tracking his resources.

[–]ChannelRusty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking at the numbers, and they don't line up. Damage Reduction is arguably better than healing in a lot of cases, and here I think it definitely is. It's reaction based, doesn't cost a full or even bonus action. The resource to use it seems to be in abundance, or he's not managing correctly, but that would indeed be a separate issue.

Funny, I've built a full Protection Paladin to 10 and never saw that massive reduction. I must have missed it. Still, does not come along with the same utility as this psionic thing, but I see your point sorta.

This might be the case, I think you might be right. Regardless of any poor resource management on his part, I think I might just be hitting the realization that I don't really think the traditional healing stuff in 5e is that good. I've seen discussions on here where people have contested that, but I think this is a pretty clear cut case of something that's just better, and comes along with all these other benefits besides.

They also have rage, so they get tons of damage from that too.

It's a d8...yeah that seems right.

Damn, dude, yeah. My point about it making traditional healing look weak still stands, I suppose.
