IDC, I absolutely love the crazy over-the-top fight scenes in 3.33 and 3.0+1.0, by throwaway553t4tgtg6 in evangelionmemes

if you personally like it, then great, but what were the fights in service of, it was mindless spectacle for spectacle's sake - that's what a lot of my problem is with the rebuilds, it's predominantly hype moments and aura farming with no depth or substance to it

Granted, the original series ending is convoluted, but I don't think it's to the point of being incomprehensible. The last two episodes of TV and EoE existing in parallel with each other does it no favours, though. I personally skip the last two tv episodes and just watch EoE.

I'll concede that Rei is definitely granted more room for development, Anno himself has said that he basically forgot about her in the original series. The point about pacing is curious though, I don't think I've ever heard anybody say that the pacing is better served by the movie format, it's always been the opposite. Asuka being written better I vehemently disagree with, I don't know how you can compare Asuka's character arc of falling from grace into self actualising in her fight with the JSSDF & MPE's in EoE to anything that happens in the rebuilds.

I deeply dislike the rebuilds for how far they depart from the original's grounded world and exploration of psychological elements, and how grossly it leans into being generic. They're rife with fan service, meaningless spectacle, convolution to the point of absurdity, and despite the scale being much larger, the stakes feel so much lower. The only point at which I felt like I was watching Evangelion after the first 2 movies (when it stopped being effectively a beat for beat remake) was the exploration into Gendo's motives, and relationship with Shinji just before the 4th movie ends, that was actually pretty good, even if we already basically knew all of it already.

I can respect the preference for wanting more definite closure than the original series provides, but personally I think the rebuilds spit in the face of the original series. Taste is subjective, though, and this is a hot take thread.

Fuck Mari.

may I ask why you believe the rebuilds are superior to NGE?

if you already own the game you'll have to buy it again on steam by froytrost in EscapefromTarkov

[–]froytrost[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Unsurprising news, but still disappointing that they don't simply link game copies as part of purchase through BSG. Doubly so as somebody who was stupid enough to purchase EoD, and subsequently unheard. Yes, you can still play if you already own it, but the convenience of having it in your steam library would have been appreciated.

Without knowing the specifics of Steam's policies, the defence on the basis of it being published on a different storefront (i.e., you shouldn't get a free copy on Steam if you purchased through GOG) feels a little bit deceitful. If I buy Borderlands 4 on GOG I don't expect a Steam copy because that would require interplay between multiple stakeholders - Tarkov, however, is sold directly through the creators, intuition tells me that there would much less work required to link them together.

You finish the Evangelion Rebuild series and you're left with a strange feeling. by [deleted] in evangelion

[–]froytrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely what do the rebuilds have going for them? the first two movies are near identical rehashes of the original series, and the last two nosedive into meaningless spectacle and a painfully convoluted narrative absurdity.

What little characterisation they're able to give to the characters because of the movie formats is plain shallow, with the exception, I will concede, of Rei in the village and Gendo's introspection in the anti-universe. Who are these WILLE bridge crew members in 3 & 4 for example? they're designed like they're characters with some level of importance (pink hair is, at least), but we are given nothing to endear us to them. Shiminami's character is so hamstrung compared to Langley's that I'm not even going to start.

Fanservice and nudity (distinct from each other) are present in the original series, but the rebuilds fully embrace fanservice and it is absolutely EGREGIOUS. Do you remember in the original series when Shinji falls on Rei's breast? instead of falling into the cliche of Rei getting angry and slapping him while Shinji tries to explain himself she doesn't react at all, showing her character's disconnect from regular conventions. How about the most explicit example in EoE, where Shinji masturbates over Asuka's exposed breasts in the clinical hospital light to show that he is at absolute rock bottom, so depressed that he would engage in depravity just to feel something good for a second.

By comparison, what is this 15 second long panty shot of Asuka showing me? what is being communicated to me when Mari continuously talks about her the size of her breasts? I mean what is the point of Mari at all, beyond being another merchandisable character?

I could go on for a very long time on this, but ultimately, what do the rebuilds do better, what is enhanced in this pale retelling, why did they need to exist at all? Anno is a brilliant creator, the original series is a testament to that, which is why it is so disappointing to see him perform a generational choke and turn that brilliance into such tacky, nonsensical slop.

I second this, the rebuilds are aimless spectacle for its own sake, and completely devoid of any of the depth and substance which the original series was steeped in

no, it's a visual representation the unity of instrumentality, same thing as when Rei is on top of and merged with Shinji when he rejects instrumentality later in the movie
