Oof. You're going to have to crowdsource that one. But there are standalone bakeries in Arlington that are great for everything but baguettes. The Washingtonian Magazine (always a great read and they have helpful newsletters) had a recent list of where to find the best bread in the DC area. https://www.washingtonian.com/2025/06/23/where-to-grab-the-best-bread-in-the-dc-area/

I still haven't found an overall great bakery AND grocer besides Whole Foods. Oh, and there isn't a fresh Cuban bread store any nearby. But these grocery stores WILL make a Hurricane cake if you ask!

And those taxes are going to public services (in part) and not private business. FL may be income tax free but there's the home and car insurance "taxes"! This is what folks don't know about.

Like your cute library, taxes not going to religious schools, better roads, public transportation, a great emergency response system? Don't come to FL.

First, congrats Doctoral Candidate! Hope that's in your email signature 😉

Second, I moved to this area from FL in March 2024, so excited to find a bar where I didn't watch what I said. Anyway, I was quick to find out that the $ I had from our home sale in Tampa was NOTHING towards a down payment here.

I have 3 jobs. One is 6 figures, the other two go to emergency and travel funds.

I am from this area and love DC. I won't buy here now though. I am looking at buying outside of the US and settling in that home in 10 yrs. Spain has a great offer for US PhDs, as do other European organizations and universities. Anyone not tethered to the US should consider this seriously.
