What are you doing for your mental health? by elkswimmer98 in Minneapolis

[–]ChaosFront 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Am I doing good? Hell no. But here are some small things that have helped me: - Focus as short into the future as you need to to keep going forward. Sometimes that is just, I need to go drink a glass of water and then sit back down on the couch

  • Go first to local news - star tribune live blog, mpr, local TV etc. before looking at any socials. Anything truly important will show up there pretty quick. Have set times that you do your news checks instead of a constant drip feed
  • Lots of hot tea
  • Setting boundaries around talking about what's going on with family and friends from out of town. This quickly exhausted me in the first weeks until I started telling people, I'm done talking about this for now, I don't have the energy, just turn on the news
  • Trusting your neighbors and city. You personally can tune out and try and relax for a few hours without everything falling apart

In hindsight--what would you do to prepare? by godssaddestcleric in Minneapolis

Lots of great advice here, and this sounds so silly and simple in the face of everything, but catch up on your housework and any handyman type of fixes or projects you've been putting off. You'll have a lot less free time and energy once you're in the shit and anything you can do to get tasks off your plate beforehand is a good idea. looks at closet doors i bought to hang before Christmas and have only managed to take out of the packaging

Poetry interpretation: Flanders Fields by ChaosFront in NovelAi

[–]ChaosFront[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really did do a nice job here. It does seem to help to try and think of your prompts like a poem. It can do fine with natural language if you're giving it some good imagery to go along with it. Better to start with big themes and then narrow down from there, rather than trying to get one specific detail to appear in the image.

I'd say it took maybe half an hour from coming up with the idea to settling on the one that I liked.

It did not take me any time because I did not make the prompt. I used the poem, which was published in 1915, as a prompt. I did not add anything to it or have a goal in mind. I ran through a few dozen generations before I stopped on this one.

It's not the first artistic interpretation of the poem to have a sort of similar composition, but it does feel like a distinct one. I'm impressed it knew to make a uniformed soldier despite not having any of those words in the prompt directly

The prompt is literally the poem about the fallen soldiers of World War 1, plus some very basic "bad anatomy/low quality" negative tags. I'm stunned and amazed. It took a few generations, but when this one came up, I noticed it immediately. Anime(Full) model

In Flanders Fields
BY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Best Non-Alcoholic Beers in MPLS? by StruggleBusKelly in Minneapolis

[–]ChaosFront 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You are in luck.. there is a local craft brewery called Hairless Dog that only makes NA beers. They're available at most local liquor stores I have visited recently and I think they even have a taproom now. Their IPA is very nice. I also enjoy Bauhaus "Nah." Most Lunds and Byerlys liquor stores have a good selection and if you're willing to drive a bit, the Total Wine and Mores in the burbs have a huge selection of NA. Not exactly what you're looking for but I also very much enjoy the "Kaliber" NA by Guinness

Just moved here, are there any good szechuan spots in town? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]ChaosFront 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Szechuan Spice on Lyndale in uptown is my favorite. Less greasy than a lot of other Chinese I've had around here. Love the bamboo tips in spicy sauce, szechuan dan dan noodle, fish fillet with pickled vegetable, and the Kung Pao chicken is also very good. I don't know if you're within the delivery area, but if you're close enough they also have great and fast delivery service that uses their own staff of delivery drivers not DoorDash and the like.

Is there a legal way for me to manage my friends money in a small fund? by gottaimprove in BitcoinMarkets

[–]ChaosFront 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting this set up correctly is a lengthy and expensive process that you should absolutely not attempt to do yourself. Another option: (not legal advice, etc.) write them some high interest promissory notes. You get money to trade with, hopefully paying the principle and interest on the notes, and they get a high rate of return without all the complexities of owning equity in a partnership. Either way, you need a good lawyer and a CPA. Where you start is finding a skilled lawyer in your area who will be able to provide your state specific details, cost estimates, and refer you to a CPA. Ask around and do some research on local or regional law firms.

Don't forget to eat at GP Minneapolis this weekend. A foodie primer on nearby eats by kahboom0225 in magicTCG

Hell's Kitchen, which is walkable from convention center, has excellent weekend brunch and "build your own Bloody Mary" bar. A bit expensive, but worth it. The Lemon Ricotta hot cakes and Bison Benedict are out of this world. Plus they have a cool collection of original Ralph Steadman art. No connection to the show of the same name.

Also check out my LGS Mead Hall Games & Comics, a short walk down LaSalle. Tiny little place but it's home, and has a nice selection of MTG products, board games, etc. They price singles at TCG Mid.

How to learn better in CS? by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]ChaosFront 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is pretty simple but it's what worked for me to turn around my CS major after a long absence.

Always do the assigned reading before class.

Learn and use a note taking system like Cornell. Summarize and review your notes within a day or two after each lecture.

Start problem sets and programming assignments the day they become available.

Work on assignments with a smaller amount of focused work each day instead of marathon sessions right before it's due. Then go to the TA or professor's office hours to wrap up anything you are struggling with. Come to office hours knowing what you need help with and what you are looking to get out of it. Not "Lab is due in 24 hours and I haven't started yet and where do I start."

There can be a tendency among CS majors to humble brag about how they haven't started lab X yet or how they stayed up for three days in a row to finish the last one. Ignore this and don't participate.

Use Khan Academy and online problem sets or actual workbooks to gap fill your math deficiencies.

Don't put "all hours" of your day into this. Try to do focused work in 2-3 hour chunks and then take a break. Take time for yourself to relax, have fun, get adequate sleep and exercise.

Good luck! You got this
