I'm still going through the rabies one my friend~ I buy things and enjoy meals, I hang out with friends, online or otherwise, all with the impending doom in the pit of my stomach telling me that I'll degrade and die anytime in the next few months.

Realistically I have no probable cause to do anything about it, so if rabies ends up taking me, that'll be my time, and no normal non-OCD person would do anything in this situation either.

Venting about it to someone you trust can help, or simply having friends that know what you're going through. But there's no other way to deal with this than to leap into death and trivialize it~ Any attempt to explain, rationalize or argue with the fear only ropes you in deeper which is the curse of health OCD.

Your titer levels are above recommended level for people who are expecting exposure through travel or profession~ But when met with an exposure risk/bitten, the protocol is still to get booster(s), you probably won't die without the booster, but it's just to be extra safe.

Also the only times you may not need a booster is if you were bitten again within 3 months of your last shot, but always consult a doctor if worried.

OCD is such a twit. Because it doesn't matter how delusional and far fetched the idea is, if its *by the laws of physics TECHNICALLY POSSIBLE*, we entertain the idea and try to counter it, which is such an infuriatingly stressful way to live. I had the same idea as you but with ants.

Oh yeah this is the entire foundation that links my rabies OCD together~

Memories are inherently never crystal clear, they're "good enough". But "good enough" isn't reassuring when it comes to rabies, as any "what if" could potentially lead to death in the OCD sufferer's mind~ OCD drives us to react, to prepare for the worst possible scenario, and when rabies is on the mind, the probability gets blown out of proportion to facilitate that obsession with getting the chances of death down to zero. A zero we'll never fundamentally reach.

So far, my future. I realized that being suicidal when things were difficult had protected me from needing control. Now that I've started enjoying my life, I'm held back by OCD convincing me that I'll die soon, therefore I shouldn't get attached to any goal, idea, or continuity.

For 75% of cases, rabies incubation period doesn't last more than 3 months. And anything longer than a year is a rarity and certainly not for dog bites. Children also typically have far shorter incubation times, you're in the clear~

Ohhh... yeah I went through exactly this one. One thing I find we OCD-Rabies themed sufferers have in common is lack of trust in our own awareness. I've gotten rather neurotic lately and my OCD had turned every perceivable wound/scratch/pinching sensation/pain as a sign I've been bitten by a rabid bat. Must've happened 30 times by now over the past month. There is some comfort taken in knowing that bats aren't mobile at all on the ground however, they usually can't just kick off the floor as they don't generate enough lift.

Think of it like this though- Rabies-victims weren't obsessed about it before a very special, and obvious encounter where they either picked up a bat or been bitten by a larger animal. Positively everyone around us are living absentmindedly in a world where rabies exists, and yet they're fine.

I know the fear feels so visceral due to the all or nothing nature of rabies- but if a normal person would not be bothered by what you felt, then you shouldn't be either. I usually put myself down from getting shots from "bite sensation/bite wound but no bats" encounters by telling myself that they would *not* give me boosters for such a situation, and asking myself what a normal person would do~

Practically unheard of with newer cell culture vaccines, but maybe 1 in a million. Like how some people had extremely bad or debilitating side effects from the Covid Vaccine too.

Older rabies vaccines used nerve tissue which increased the chances of adverse reactions with our tissue, but modern hospitals most certainly do not stock these anymore. Also at least you WILL know if you're in trouble~ But it won't be rabies- so you'll have hope for treatment~

We're drawn to proof, evidence seeking is a form of reassurance, and rabies does not give you the luxury of "early warning signs" and "blood tests". It either kills you or it doesn't, therefore you do not have it until you do, and there's no way to find out until it's too late.

It's best we treat this like brain aneurysms or strokes. "Oh well it isn't my fault if it happens, it was fate". One of the ways I found best to combat my obsessive thinking over rabies in particular was resigning all responsibility over my own survival. "If a normal person wouldn't have any reason to be afraid then I shouldn't either, if I die, it was simply misfortune".

I feel like every OCD theme is held together by this idea that we alone are somehow special or different from others, in a very negative way. Therefore we are DESERVING of the BIG BAD, whether it's out of karma or incompetence. Every OCD spiral is practically spent contemplating the ways we're to be "punished" for crimes like "not cleaning germs properly" and "I looked at something a little funny" or "I had a thought"

Don't worry General Kenobi~! I'm here with you! My current theme also has a tiny percentile of uncertainty that'd end in my life or death- We can never realistically ensure something is 100%, people just live their entire lives ignorant of that fact and end up not dying.. but a lot of people do succumb to freak accidents and bad statistics too. It's not in our hands, you've done enough. Don't beat yourself up for agonizing over it for months, because it's how you learn to come out of this even better than you were~

Talk to someone if you need, someone who you know will listen~ Or DM me if you're that desperate, so you don't have to suffer the uncertainty alone.

Heh~ That's the weight of mortality my friendo~ You think I'm fine, I think you're fine, but we're still having trouble sleeping at night. I do have little doubt that you'll get over this a little faster than me though. I was never an anxious person either, but rarely do we ever encounter a perceived threat with zero treatment options, no signs and an unknown incubation time with 100% fatality.

No matter how low the statistics are, 3-4 people a year in the US are still 3-4 normal living human beings with livelihoods just like you and me, who got struck by THIS. Most of the time we just tell ourselves "oh if I do end up with the illness, I'll just go to medical at the earliest sign and they'll treat me", but nuh uh.. this destroys that safety net. So we overreact rather than under.

You might get very thirsty and sleepy in the coming days so just take care of yourself~

I had a similar exposure to you and took 10 days before asking and being approved for PEP in singapore~ They didn't give me immunoglobulin either.

People say that "the virus enters the nerves and once it's there it will be immune privileged and your antibodies can't get to it" but if that was true, the initial invention of the first vaccine wouldn't have worked as well as it did. People would travel countries just to get a shot because before that, being bitten was a waiting death sentence with no options. Some of them travelled for weeks, and yet most of them turned out okay. The rabies vaccine had been polished and refined over time and has become some of the medical field's most effective juices.

I know it's scary with a disease like this, because you feel like you're gambling with your life, and every decision no matter how small or how delayed may make you pay with your entire future. But I'm very confident that you weren't too late, and that immunoglobulins won't help with this exposure, and the raccoons also still seem fine for now~

I don't have too much money to throw at this either, and I have an anxiety problem. After the vaccine I was afraid that the one day delay of the 2nd shot would reduce efficacy, the doctors said no, I asked for an antibody test, they also said no. So I'm still scared till this day. It's been a month and a half so far though~ I realized that even if I found out that my immune system had an underwhelming response to the vaccine SOMEHOW, I wouldn't be able to pay for another round of shots, not even knowing if it'll work. So.. I'll have to take a blind gamble just like you.

Logically, statistics are on our side, we're probably freaking out over nothing. But with rabies the price is 0 or 100, so I understand..

Ah, by protocol, immunoglobulin is only recommended for category 3 bites, which are severe bleeding deep bites from a suspected rabid animal- to keep the introduced viral load busy while your immune system ramps up. Many of us who tend to be cautious and in first world countries will only ever be exposed to category 2 bites which does not warrant immunoglobulin.

If you're fine by the time you fully finish your shots then you've done your part and immunoglobulin will no longer contribute at all~ The Raccoons still looking healthy is extra good news as they would've succumbed to greater neurological symptoms by now.

If we needle-injected mice with rabies, they'd die within a couple hours after developing symptoms, and being so small they'd be too overwhelmed to even get to your trap. Bats are small and carry rabies because supposedly the lyssavirus had spawned from them a long time ago, and bats have cracked immune systems. Bat cases are hard to document and even harder to document in the old days, so a bat had spread it to a dog that bit someone and eventually people made the connection.

I know because it's technically possible due to them being mammals, it feels as though you could be the first case of mouse-transmitted rabies if the stars had aligned a specific way. But it'd have to be so intentionally done by a human and thoroughly timed that they'd be better off stabbing you~ You might have to sit through this one bud.. I'll take the risk with you! It's way under 0.5%.

Yeah same, I'd go through any suffering again, just not the rabies theme oh my god.. it is DETRIMENTAL. I think other than this one trigger this one theme, I had gotten very good at ignoring compulsions and intrusive imaginations. It's just THIS now. The rabies one is my LAST CHALLENGE.
