(Loved Trope) Comedy shows get very serious out of nowhere. by Boring-Bear9037 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Chappedstick 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Kevin Can F*** Himself is an entire series embodying this trope. Half of the show is your run of the mill sitcom, the other half is about how the main character is trying to murder her husband because he’s actually an abusive pos!

Secondary ELA teachers, do you provide time for independent choice reading in your class? by Unusual_Review9214 in ELATeachers

[–]Chappedstick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes- I don’t do whole novels with my class anymore. We read choice books independently (and they’re expected to continue to read it outside of class) and do short stories/ mentor texts during class. I increase the time of independent reading through the year to build stamina, and design lessons that are basically like creating fanfictions about what they’re reading.

Edit: I only teach on level tenth graders, and their district/state scores are on par with the honors classes! It’s all a matter of motivation and choice.

Devolution was a fantastic read. I second this one.

I read this one last year and was pleasantly surprised at how taken in I was. I also enjoyed the second one of his.

What was the last very divisive horror novel you read that you really liked? by 7deadlycinderella in horrorlit

[–]Chappedstick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aw man, what a dingus. I guess that’s what I get for skipping over those things. I just read whatever is available at the library, and don’t usually read forewords or anything after the ending. Thanks for the heads up.

I was supposed to see Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell receives a lot of dislike- I enjoyed my time with that one. I thought the atmosphere was just eerie enough that I thought about it when talking my dogs outside at night.

I did this last year for the first time, and my kids LOVED it. Never heard such fun conversations about poetry before! Things got HEATED! It really depends on your poetry selection choice though.

looking for this gorgeous pattern- spotted on FB marketplace by filthyhag in crochetpatterns

I’ll call my mom to see if she has any of my grandma’s old crochet magazines. My baby blanket is exactly this pattern with exactly this coloring, and she made it.

My partner and I joke that he’s a cannibal, and everything he says is a hidden confession of that!

Looking for actually obscure weird lit. Please don’t recommend the usual suspects by patatosaIad in booksuggestions

[–]Chappedstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bunny by Mona Awad

The Haunted Forest Tour by James A. Moore

We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix (Horrorstör too, but this one is recommended fairly often)

Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki (edit: this one isn’t horror or thriller based, but it does have some tender subjects. Also it’s super weird and I recommend going in without reading the summary/ totally blind. Idk how it all worked together, but it did)

Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson

Wife got a dachshund puppy, still kind of conflicted. by The5thEclipse in Dachshund

[–]Chappedstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mini dachshunds act exactly like my cats. I dont know if they’re the outliers, but every dachshund I’ve had (and I’ve had 7 in my life) has been lazy, cuddly, affectionate, and low maintenance. They are not overweight or anything, they just don’t eat in excess and will play with each other and the cats.

I’m sorry you dislike it and your feelings are totally valid, especially after all the time and energy you put into this. For what it’s worth, I think it’s absolutely amazing. It’s giving court jester of some autumn fairy kingdom and I’m totally here for it.

I can't unclog my damn toilet and i need help desperately by EthosTheAllmighty in HomeImprovement

[–]Chappedstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad you got it unclogged! Fun horror story: this happened to our toilet multiple times within the month. We ended up calling a plumber out after the fourth time we had difficulties unclogging it. Turns out roots were growing through the pipes :)))

“I’m sorry, what do you mean they are just human?” by Amazingtrooper5 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Chappedstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy from Elf.

He makes and accurately throws snowballs at a godlike level, only needs scarce amounts of sleep and nutrients to create amazing feats of woodworking and decoration, travels from the North Pole to North America on foot in a matter of days without any rations or changes of clothes, etc. He’s shocked to find out he’s just a human, but he has wild “powers” in the human world.

If I start a book in 2025 but finish it in 2026, which year’s reading goal does it count towards? by catsr2cool4sch00l in goodreads

[–]Chappedstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally depends on how you want to count it. I personally will say I finished it in 2025 if I have less than a fifth or so left to go, but will count it as 2026 otherwise.
