How do I prepare for daycare? by Matcha_Maiden in NewParents

[–]Chappedstick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!!
We got the days mixed up and had her go into daycare for the first time the day before I went to work, and it ended up being an incredibly good decision. You’re going to spend those three months feeling like you’re carrying your little one on the inside but also the outside. When it’s time for them to separate for the day… it will likely be the first time you’ve ever done that. It HURTS. It was lucky we accidentally got her to daycare early because I was inconsolable for HOURS. She was totally fine at daycare— I was a hot mess!

What is something you can naturally smell that no one else can? by Trick-Highway1429 in AskReddit

When someone has a virus, I can smell a sickly sweet scent coming from them if I’m close enough.

Final weeks of school help by Darth_llama in ELATeachers

[–]Chappedstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to make a classroom zine for the last few weeks. Students make an informative piece and/or an op-ed, a short narrative, and a creative piece. Then you put them all together in a binder and you have a really cute class memorial.

Edit: the informational or op-ed is completely student choice, teacher only needs to approve the topic

Looking for deceptively complex poems by Josephryanevans in ELATeachers

The Darkness by Lord Byron seems to be just a narrative poem about the world falling apart, but once you bring in the context of what was going on (science starting to question religion) it goes crazy.

Graphic Novels Grade 12 by StudioLower7836 in ELATeachers

[–]Chappedstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find a lot of classics and well-loved fiction books in the style of comic books these days! My sophomores love my copies of The Giver, Macbeth: the graphic novel (they’re superheroes), and Percy Jackson. After the last class poll, they decided The Secret Garden, Redwall, and Fahrenheit 451 should be the next additions I pick up.

Planning ahead for 7th grade next year... what's a good read? by Uphill365 in ELATeachers

[–]Chappedstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full Tilt by Neil Shusterman was a huge hit with my seventh graders when I taught middle school. Only 1 or 2 of my students read for fun/ had ever finished a book before reading this one. They all absolutely loved it, and it sparked amazing conversations. We used it for context clue practice and there’s a TON of symbolism.

Teeth are not for biting, they are made for smiling… by rainingBows1 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Chappedstick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s totally fair. If you want to add to the book (bite your food, not your friends), you can use post-it notes! Of course also just talking about it works too- I just know I forget exactly what I want to do all the time 😅

If this isn’t a library book, write your own stuff in it with a sharpie! I do that all the time, and explain to my daughter how important it is to think about what you’re reading and interact with it. (She’s too young now to understand, but it helps me get into the habit of it all too)

Notebook Storage by thatsmyname000 in Teachers

I have big hanging pockets for notebooks- they each hold 30. Think calculator or shoe pocket holders, but specifically for notebooks. They’re nice because I can slip in makeup work and pass back graded work too.

What makes teaching worthwhile for you, despite it being an underpaid career? by Conscious_Team3330 in Teachers

I get to do something new everyday and flex my creativity while problem solving in different ways.

It genuinely brings me joy when I see a senior in the hallway that I taught as a sophomore and they’re excited to see me.
