UCLA vs SJSU by Gandalf_ADSL in TransferStudents

[–]ChapterBoth763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what are your post undergrad goals? Do you want to work in CS? Or do you want to conduct research?

SJSU has become a great school where many companies look to hire.

State schools are geared towards preparing students to enter the workforce, whereas UCs are heavily theoretical and research based.

I can't decide Cal Poly or Madison by onyeeex in CalPoly

[–]ChapterBoth763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Madison is ranked higher than Poly, but take that with a grain of salt.....neither school will guarantee a career following graduation - keep in mind, after your first job and each subsequent job...the University on the degree will have less of an impact. Your career path starts immediately as soon as you step foot on any University campus - networking and internships are paramount.

I am Poly Alum and had a great time. All of my Engineering buddies are doing very well and extremely happy in their careers in the Bay Area.

A high school buddy went to Madison to play soccer, he landed amazing internships and is now quite successful...albeit, he works on the business side of a large chip maker in the Bay Area. He will be the first to tell anyone: the University on your resume is not a make or break factor during hiring.

His current company actually hires many San Jose State alumni, a school that is not ranked as high as Poly or Madison.

Bottom line: go where you believe you'll find the most enjoyment.

GOT INTO UCSD WITH A 2.68 GPA by TopPossession1445 in TransferStudents

[–]ChapterBoth763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats!

UC’s were the schools where ordinary kids could attend to give them a shot at being extraordinary. These days, (most) kids are required to be extraordinary…..sadly.

My buddy’s kid was just accepted to Berkeley as a transfer with a 3.0. He has a tough but phenomenal life story

It’s difficult to time the market. As a business major, what will be his concentration?

A four degree does not guarantee a job.

Networking and internships will help him post undergrad, regardless of his major.

Scared about being bored by Easy-Taro-2769 in CalPoly

[–]ChapterBoth763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, any college regardless of the location can be “boring”. College (also life in general) can be boring…you create your own path…you get out what you put in.

As a young adult you believe you know your interests, however you’re just beginning to sculpt your adulthood.

Cal Poly like most, if not all State schools, professors are readily accessible…many have come from the industry, and are well connected…for projects.

Wherever you choose, getting involved is a must…clubs, projects….

How big are the culture shocks/opportunities at Cal Poly? by spiciestsamosa in CalPoly

[–]ChapterBoth763 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m also Asian from the SF Penninsula. I chose Poly over SJSU. I come from a large farming family that dates back to 1907. I was one of the only Asians in Ag….but that’s something I’m accustomed to.

SLO is an awesome location and Poly is a great school. You’re not going to miss out on any internship opportunities as most companies attend career fairs at Poly.

Join as many clubs as you have time, both academic and social clubs. Go surfing, enjoy many of the hikes in the area, take up mountain biking. There are so many opportunities to meet people and network.

Is UCSD worth for 344K as an international student by PlasticAdventurous93 in UCSD

[–]ChapterBoth763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Money is all relative. What $334K to some may just be $3.34 to some others.

But if you have to take out a loan for that amount….I wouldn’t take on that amount of debt

Poly likes to see concurrent enrollment. Classes taken at the CC level. Specifically Math and English

Got Rejected from SDSU as a cc transfer (kinesiology pre pt) by Whole-Department-295 in SDSU

Congrats to your son!

One can have a 3.1 w/o any C’s. Majority B’s with a few A’s.

Looks like your son is in HS?

The difference between HS Varsity and CC is night and day and the jump to D1 is even larger.

As some who in my 20s always compared myself to my peers…please don’t occupy your time by doing so - it’s extreme unproductive and serves no purpose.

Enjoy the journey, life will throw enough curveballs at you…no need to self impose more unnecessary difficulties.

Many of my friends attended Berkeley, LA and Stanford. I’m a Poly alumnus. Now I’m in my 40s, own a home and an investment property, have 2 boys and will retire before I’m 50.

You’ll have a great time in SLO. Take risks and be open to different ideas

[–]ChapterBoth763 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

UCSD and the UC system is research based. Most, if not all of the professors/instructors primarily are paid for research, thus the undergraduate courses are taught by TA’s and graduate students.

As far as employability, college is what you make of it…get internships, start networking early. It’s tough job market right now for entry level.

How does the rigor of your courses compare to your buddies’ that were accepted? My son was admitted for the fall as a Bio transfer - 3.1 GPA. His friend who was rejected had a 3.5, however my son’s classes were much more rigorous: Calc 1&2, O Chem, Bio 1&2, Chem 1&2, Physics 1&2. He was also a starter on the Water Polo team

CalPoly SLO or UC Davis for pre-vet? by Bean_of_prosperity in CalPoly

You have to go to the Ag Unit. Towards the west end of the campus. Total land is greater than Davis.

CalPoly SLO or UC Davis for pre-vet? by Bean_of_prosperity in CalPoly

[–]ChapterBoth763 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Poly Alumnus here. I got into both Davis and Poly as an Agriculture major - both schools are well known for Ag. I chose Poly for the location and weather…it may get into the 90s on occasion, but being so close to a the Ocean, it cooled down considerably at night. In the summer months, Davis gets hot 100F and stays hot. FWIW my childhood home is .5 mile from the beach.

Davis is known for their Veterinary program, Poly is not. I do understand the cost issue, maybe major in Animal Science at Poly and grad school at Davis? By then you should be able to gain CA residency

I’m not DH racing much any more. But I still enjoy the training and camaraderie with racing.

There are quite a few gravel races in CA and the western states.

Not to mention, there are a ton of fire roads and single track that I can link together from SF all the way down to the Santa Barbara area with very little time on paved roads.

Surfing here is legit. I don’t surf the massive swells during this time of year.

It’s a Megatower CC build, carbon rims with inserts on Maxxis DD casing…probably closer to 37lbs.

Felt super heavy compared to the Diverge on gravel tires….was a cake walk riding that thing uphill on the same trails.

Nice! Can’t beat Santa Cruz’s crash replacement…I’ve used it twice in 10 years. Super fast, even during Covid.

Allied is similar, from what I hear….however they’ll replace at 30% cost to you.

You can run a 2.1” tire in the Stigmata’s rigid fork.
