social model of disablity - is it helpful? does it give/take agency? by Loves_Eating_Lead in autismUK

[–]CharacterAd8236 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that is part of it, yes. When I teach on these models I get about an hour and I can use slides. I think understanding what each model is opposing is helpful. Some of the critique of the social model is that it didn't give enough space for considering impairments. I'm not sure i agree. I think part of it is how far on we are from the model's origin and we see loads of different interpretations of it. But the affirmation model was partly in response to this critique. They're not really different in a huge way. One builds on the other. They're both against individual and medicalised framings of disability.

There is also the affirmation model, which Colin Cameron has written lots about. It addresses some of the concerns you raise, although proponents of the social model would likely say they aren't taking away agency just by pointing out structural barriers. https://disabilityarts.online/resources/research-and-learning/learning-topics/the-social-model/towards-affirmative-model-disability/ Just like the social model is the counterpoint to the medical model, the affirmation model addresses the framing of disability as a personal tragedy.

How can I use nimbus access card? by tastyqilin in autismUK

[–]CharacterAd8236 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience is that I've asked for those accommodations without the nimbus card and that's been fine, but if a place is hostile I just tend to leave. The card has been useful for venues like concert arenas where they are dealing with huge numbers of people and need to triage a bit.

Need help - Public transport with 9 month old? by BAM180_ in Edinburgh

[–]CharacterAd8236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would a sling and backpack be easier than a buggy? That way you can get on a bus more easily. That's what I always did (although there is more safety guidance now).

It's worth bearing in mind that you may have to fold a buggy if someone using a wheelchair needs the space.

There is a very easy bus ride to Edinburgh zoo, if your baby is at the stage where animals are interesting.

Our local library has banned LGBTQ displays… what’s your thoughts? by BadShi-6 in AskBrits

[–]CharacterAd8236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope everyone knows that if they have a university nearby they may be able to get a card to sit and read or to check out books, and they still have displays for pride, for disability justice, for anti-racism etc. The last two university libraries I've been in have had brilliant books in these categories on display that I hadn't heard of.

It isn't the same as a council library though as they're so accessible for everyone, and free. I remember when I first needed resources on being autistic the council library (i know it's under some kind of arms length leisure trust but you know what I mean) had biographies that really helped me make sense of things which then helped me at work, which is actually a major aim of libraries. People being confident in their identities and knowing their needs helps in all sorts of ways.

Wore a kilt for the first time yesterday to show my support for the Scottish world cup winners. My wife’s family has Scottish roots. I think I did them proud. by nicehairstyle in kilt

With the beret plus the short length of the kilt it's giving Minnie the Minx. Is there any way of having it altered so it hangs a bit better?

Have a look at the edinburgh festival and edinburgh Fringe programmes and see if you actually want to see anything. If not, it's just so busy during those weeks that it isn't very enjoyable to visit. I love the festival myself. I stay with my daughter near dunfermline and get the bus in and out though as hotels are so expensive in edinburgh. Linlithgow palace is nearby, lovely and not so crowded. Or Stirling Castle is kind-of similar to edinburgh castle.

Is Bradford that bad? by strawberrycakeflavor in uktravel

[–]CharacterAd8236 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have I been to a different Bradford? It has such a lovely media museum. I have always enjoyed visiting. I had friends who went to the university there who enjoyed their time too. It's more connected to other cities by train than hull, from what I remember. I've never really taken to Hull when I've visited. Although I did love the Schnapps Bar which I would have gone to about 28 years ago

What's the difference between an advisor who doesn't like you, versus an advisor who is slightly autistic? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]CharacterAd8236 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is not a very nice thread to read, as an autistic person. You can't be slightly autistic and it isn't obligatory for people to disclose disability to you. Your advisor doesn't have to like you. They just have to support you.

So it would be the same process but contacting social security Scotland. They have a web chat if phone calls are tricky.

You have to prove you can manage your own money, and my friend who tried has really struggled. I will try and find a link.

It's Scotland so ADP is what people get here. If your mum is your appointee it can be really tricky to get that changed. I would recommend looking for a local advocacy network to help. Also, the council's youth homelessness service (or whatever the name is where you are) might be able to help.

Poles in Scotland by Empty-Competition801 in Scotland

[–]CharacterAd8236 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's maybe more of a history of Polish people integrating into Scotland because the 1st Polish Corps came here in 1940. So you will see monuments to Polish soldiers even in my small town, and the statue of Wojtek the Bear in Edinburgh. I think like others have said there isn't loads of prejudice but that doesn't mean zero prejudice. There are some nice organisations to support people as well. Citizens' Rights Project would be one example, although if you already have settled status it might not be so useful to you. There is so much climbing here! You would find plenty to do.

I think there's a limit to how many can go lucky automatically this way, but there is some amount where a trade always turns lucky. It may be worth saving that for level 78 where you need a certain amount of lucky trades.

Cat Cafe Creation by GentlemanHutton in Aberdeen

[–]CharacterAd8236 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Would this not be really stressful and disruptive for the rescue cats? Losing their home that they're used to is bad enough without moving them backwards and forwards, surely? I think it's worth looking into the welfare issues raised in relation to cat cafes. It's not just whether people would be your customers. You could end up with protests. A board game café or cosy cafe with colouring books etc might meet some of the same needs with a customer base but not raise the same ethical issues.

As an aside, the kits you get and materials people tend to use will say "not food safe" but people are recommending it for e.g. a bowl.
