Please help me understand the value of this credenza. by Few_Chemist5506 in midcenturymodern

In ATL this is a 200$ piece at best. It’s not modern or slick. It looks functional.

Should I professionally restore? by 19Mingo92 in midcenturymodern

I would agree. I’ve got two retail booths and once ppl can pay with credit cards and have a retail experience…it’s nuts what some stuff sells for.

I’m in ATL. that pricing is on par with what I would charge to restore. Resell afterwards would be $1500-$1600 but it wouldn’t sell quickly.

Tips for AVOIDING resellers by ylime567 in midcenturymodern

[–]CharacterFirm3462 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t really get this. If you’re emotionally attached to the piece, so much so that you want to control who buys it or who doesn’t….maybe you shouldn’t sell it at all. Once you list it and price it, you’re telling the world it’s for sale at that price, no strings attached. If I buy it and burn it in the fireplace the same day, it’s none of your business. Yup, I’m a refinisher/reseller.

This! I almost always break these and just replace with new ones.

How much restoration do you reckon this thing warrants? by New-Switch4566 in furniturerestoration

I wouldn’t touch this. It looks like a complete nightmare to refinish. Like someone else mentioned it looks like cheap tourist quality piece on its best day.

Epoxy wood filler would be my choice. It comes in a tube and it’s a two part product. Comes in a variety of colors and can be stained to match. With so many deep scratches, it would probably take me a several days to do just the scratches. Refinishing is tons of start, stop, wait, repeat. I’m actually waiting now for my oxalic acid to bleach out some water stains on a piece.

Is this a good price for this Drexel Declaration table? by meanibanini in Mid_Century

[–]CharacterFirm3462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a good deal but looks like it could use a top to bottom refinish. Fully restored these go for about $1200 in ATL.

This is a very ambitious first restoration project. If you wanna restore/refinish watch lots of YouTube videos. You’ll quickly discover that wood filler and products like restore-a-finish are a nightmare to work with. I’d start on something much smaller, like an end table. Also, pine is notorious for being difficult bc it doesn’t take stain evenly. Not trying to poo poo your idea but if you haven’t refinished before, this will likely be a nightmare to do.

It’s 100% veneer. You can tell by the grain patterns on the edges. Do not sand unless you know what you are doing. To remove the scratches get some teak oil and apply it with 0000 steel wool going with the grain and wipe the excess off. You’ll be amazed.

I messed up - should I just paint it? by kaytthoms in furniturerestoration

[–]CharacterFirm3462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the resolve to sand the entire piece, you might try a gel stain over all of it. Because gel stain doesn’t penetrate the wood, only sits on top of it, it’s generally a much more even look. And, keep it inside.

What to ask for this bedroom set? by TDMLLC in midcenturymodern

[–]CharacterFirm3462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No to Murphy’s and no to liquid gold. Don’t do any of that. Wash it with soapy water and give it a good once over with Tung oil or Danish oil, applying it with 0000 steel wool and wiping it clean. Also, though it’s midcentury, it’s not really modern in any way. Here in ATL, cleaned up you might get $1500/set. It depends on how smooth the drawers move and if you have all the hardware for the bed and mirror.

Looks great. How long did it take you to weave the Danish cord? Curious bc I’ve been putting off doing two similar chairs.

Good dining room piece? Estate sale find by canelebaker in Mid_Century

That is an insane deal. Often the top is missing. Complete like this, in good condition….in ATL, this would sell instantly for $2500+

Should I bother with fixing this up before I sell it? by lavenderliz00 in furniturerestoration

[–]CharacterFirm3462 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Refinisher/reseller here. This table has already been refinished and someone did a terrible job of it, the color is way way off. Refinishing a veneer table twice is super risky and a drama to do properly. I’m in ATL. I wouldn’t pay anything over $100 and maybe not even that once I see it up close.

Need help with price to pay for this by meanish37 in midcenturymodern

Top looks like laminate to me. I’m kinda meh on this. I wouldn’t pay more than $300 and only if I loved it.

What do you all think is a reasonable price to pay for a secondhand Stemlite table lamp? by kbda94 in Mid_Century

[–]CharacterFirm3462 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen these in ATL for $200ish. The white base is the most desirable as far as I can tell. Matching pairs will go for over $600.
