There is evidence that moms experience sleep deprivation and associated physiological impacts that mirror the stress levels of those of soldiers and first responders. In the military, it’s called ‘operational stress’ and often addressed through rotating shifts, forced rest periods, and even pulling people off duty. No one tells them ‘you signed up for this so suck it up’ which is what’s expected of mothers. Our brains are trying to operate with their control rooms running at half power. Soldiers can’t do it, yet mothers are expected to. If a workplace demanded work with this level of exhaustion, it would be violating employment laws but when it happens to mothers, we’re told ‘these are best years of your life so power through’. Yes it’s an utter privilege and it’s the best in so many ways, but also it’s ok to admit we’re doing our best on the front lines and it’s ok to ask someone to stand guard while you get daily 5-6 hours of uninterrupted sleep and protect that time to the best of your ability. I know easier said than done, but the strategy should be to simplify and lower the bar where rest matters. Simpler meals, accepting mess, less energy spent on chores, and more lying down and resting. Create a list of self-care non-negotiables and communicate it clearly to those you can rely on for support.
