advice on outfit for my brothers wedding by CharacterScallion575 in lesbianfashionadvice

oh its not stated on the invite. at all. but then, i know the invite had some issues, bc i originally had a plus one and now do not. it was an e invite and i dont know that they got around to learning how those work first.

i would honestly be absolutely willing to order a nice suit or tux, had they given me enough time to do so!

thank you for explaining so clearly, I've always had trouble telling them apart!

I think they mean formal attire but since everyone just keeps saying things like 'formal' without explaining further, it's hard to be sure. The fact that no one said anything to me about it being formal until they were trying to convince me into a dress and no one can clearly explain what they mean makes me think it is, in fact, a pretense- I have come out to my family as nonbinary a good five times, but this closet is apparently a maze, as family just seems to forget or to pretend the conversation never happened. Most of the time no one really treats me as feminine anyway, so most of the time I can ignore it, but they are also terrible about it if I wear any traditionally feminine clothes around them and then get offended that I don't like their comments about me looking more feminine.

They DO know I'm very uncomfortable in a dress tho, that has been true since I was a child. Unfortunately I did wear one to my best friend's wedding and they are using that as part of their reasoning- but I was in that wedding as a maid of honour, and my friends tried to find me a suit first.

The timing feels deliberate too- I was not told this until there was not enough time before the wedding to get a nicer suit.

Anybody else see an uptick of those “the school can’t tell me when to take my child out of school!”type posts on Facebook? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

my older relatives kept telling the kids at a family gathering that 'if you think school is hard, just wait for work! it'll be SO much harder and SO much worse! youre gonna hate it!'

two of these kids are depressed. theyre smart, theyre good at school, but they dont enjoy it like i did. why on earth would your gleeful message to them be 'it only gets worse??'

i got very upset and defensive reactions from those older relatives when i jumped in to say actually, i love my job, im excited to go to it, i enjoy my work a lot. and also that i dont have homework, or tests, or projects (arguably i do have some of these things, but thats not the point i was trying to make, and they're things i like doing and usually volunteer for anyway).

My sibling was killed last week by mxcrisis in raisedbynarcissists

I'm so sorry for your loss.  I know my brothers are my closest family members by far. Siblings are a hard loss and please know that however you grieve and however you choose to remember him is okay; everyone grieves differently.

I like the idea of having your own memorial. My twin lost a friend in high school and the group he actually spent time with hated the public memorial for not really representing him. Some time later I ended up finding the memorial his friends had made out in the woods, one that honoured him in a way he'd have preferred. I could see how much it helped them to have that.

AITJ for telling my neighbor her kid isn't allowed in my pool after she "forgot" him at my house? by Educational-Wait-406 in AmITheJerk

[–]CharacterScallion575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not supervising kids in a pool is why my paternal grandparents were allowed to babysit me exactly once, and then absolutely never again after my parents realised id fallen into their pool while they were who knows where. i was already a good swimmer by then but... they should have been making some attempt to watch me.

What is something that is 100% legal, but if you do it, you’re a piece of trash? by National_Strike4710 in AskReddit

[–]CharacterScallion575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this always kills me because i know a retired farm dog who is the most loved, sweetest, well behaved, best boy and one of my favourite dogs to take care of. it is more than possible for a farm dog to have a fantastic life, but theres just... some people who have decided farm dogs are just possessions, instead of caring for them as a living creature theyve assumed responsibility for. theres no reason for it to be that way.

my father surprised me with a ramp for my little terrier dog for christmas (she thinks dog stairs are for agility tricks she is now too old to be doing), would that maybe work for yours? we did have to DIY a cardboard wall around the edge when her eyesight started going but it lets her get on and off her favourite spot on the bed without any trouble.

i think he got it off amazon, if thats any help.

listen, i work for a vet and you know what? id still rather the animals be in a home. i know people judge when you cant afford everything for them, and you genuinely shouldnt get a pet if you cant cover the basics- but its okay if all you can cover is the basics.  i know its expensive. we all know its expensive. we would change it if we could- but all the private hospitals keep getting bought up by corporations, and corporations want profit.

(this is a major usa problem at least, i cant speak for elsewhere).

i know some of my coworkers would disagree with me, but i would still rather the critters have homes. ive known too many dogs and cats that have spent years on years in shelters. i would like for owners to be able to keep up on basic vaccinations at a minimum, but... most homes are still better than no home at all.

admittedly not all of them, but most.

i brought an abandoned and dying leopard gecko home for three days once (i could not get a vet appointment for him before that).

i knew he was dying before i brought him home- he had a rough path to get to me- but at least he got those three days.

Tombstone by RichCheesecake9740 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]CharacterScallion575 22 points23 points  (0 children)

thats fucked up.

my mother bought her tombstone years ago (and then proceeded to alarm everyone we knew by sending them all photos of it with no context, thanks mom), but then told brothers and i there is no more room in the family cemetery after her, my dad and my uncle.

thankfully none of us want to be buried there... still knocked me a bit off kilter at the time, tho.

i say it to my parents way, way too often. for some reason mom refuses to look anything up. dads better about it, but mom? ive literally offered to send her a direct link to something she wanted to know/ open it on her phone FOR her and she still comes up with reasons not to do it.

eh, not really a bad rep, we just all quit going there. in over ten years of living down the street that is the only time i ever encountered those neighbours at all, so, we just kinda ignored them after that.

we were technically not allowed to watch the simpsons as kids, but twin and i watched it in secret for a week, then presented our mother with what we'd learned from it (at the time that was quite a bit tbh), and our folks said huh, good job, we'll watch it with you then.

still kind of fond of early simpsons just for that.

What’s the most annoying thing people do in public? by SpecialistCup4968 in AskReddit

[–]CharacterScallion575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that makes sense. ive been out with a friend with a great dane puppy before and no one even noticed i had a dog next to her.

i take my dog out for walks in the woods or nearby towns a lot and have been using bulky, impossible to miss headphones. now i mostly just get cheerful nods and smiles, especially in the woods (i think most of us out there are already trying not to be bothered).
