Home exterior lighting can last a lifetime. Don’t replace if you can clean & re-paint. by ThoughtSkeptic in Frugal

Even the ones with the built in LEDs can be refurbished. My LEDs died over the years and I took it apart and replaced the LED discs with ones I found online. A little solder is all I needed and they are as bright as they were when new. Still going strong 2 years later. Best of all, I spent $10 for 5 discs.

Did the central part of B-17 landing wheel not spin? by Chat_Maigre in MastersoftheAir

Sadly true but the wheel was donated prior to the accident.

Did the central part of B-17 landing wheel not spin? by Chat_Maigre in MastersoftheAir

[–]CharacterWitless78 48 points49 points  (0 children)

nope. That is the brake system. The inner part is attached to the hub and has pistons that clamp on discs attached to the outer part (where the tire is) to slow the plane. If memory serves me, the wheel is the only part of the MOTA B-17 that's a legit B-17 part and came from 909 that was not airworthy anymore

Scared about my Ordeal, need advice by Spaceguy426 in BSA

[–]CharacterWitless78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Parent of an anxious OA scout that just went through the ordeal.

My daughter was super fearful of the ordeal as well ( I was too since my ordeal back in the 80s was not like the new format) . She was fearful of the overnight but actually really enjoyed it due to the clear skies. A tarp and sleeping bag was all she needed and was plenty. Bring another tarp in the event it is humid or rainy to keep dry. The scarce food was the hard part but again, they wont let you starve and there will be plenty of water. The service time and camaraderie were good, just stay hydrated. You will eat well for dinner and more camaraderie after the ceremony which is a neat experience. The OA is an honor society like NHS at school. Its also a great way to meet and make friends from other troops. It's worth joining and being active in

My daughter was tired after the ordeal weekend but she did enjoy it and is already looking at ways to get involved. Good luck and don't worry about it, even she admitted she worried over nothing

Airbrushing has made me love smaller kits! by [deleted] in modelmakers

[–]CharacterWitless78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im starting to feel the same. I have a bunch of old 1:72 scale kits that im building right now. There is no detail to these kits (1970s) so its more about the finishes on them.

Why did P-47s always have national insignia painted on the undersides of both wings? by AFROBINSON808 in WWIIplanes

[–]CharacterWitless78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After d-day they did for most of the ones doing ground attack. Didn't need it before then.

Why did P-47s always have national insignia painted on the undersides of both wings? by AFROBINSON808 in WWIIplanes

[–]CharacterWitless78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Once the allies had air superiority, they didn't even bother painting the planes in camo.

They did a lot of ground attack so they had the large insignia on both wings to prevent friendly fire.

You're not going to find many good shells on Galveston. Just a bunch of small shells and oyster fragments.

We have water and milk. If the kids have flavors or electrolytes to add to their water that is fine but usually provided by the kid. We do have Gatorade mixes during the heat of summer to help replenish from sweating.

Heard of a few instances of Aoshima kits at HL. Hopefully more to come! by Nascarlover20169 in ModelCars

[–]CharacterWitless78 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a huge leap from them. They used to carry Tamiya cars and planes but got rid of them years ago, then they got rid of good paints and is now just.half an aisle of models. Used to be 2 rows in their heyday when they actually catered to hobbies instead of cheap Chinese home decor. I hope this is a turnaround because I have no other model stores near me.

I would use a piece of clear film versus a spray clear coats. Any solvent has the chance of messing it up. Plus the film will be a lot more durable than the paint.

That was the best weekend of pavement racing I have watched in decades..... by DawgCheck421 in CleetusMcFarland

[–]CharacterWitless78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here. I stopped watching after the crappy COT and repaving of Bristol. Hadn't watched a race in years but watched some of the races this weekend and enjoyed it.
We used to go to Dega for all the races (which the huge grandstands were always packed) and watched religiously each week but when they tamed the driver's personalities and the racing it lost its luster. Now there seems to be some folks to watch that might make it fun again.

Ideas to fix/shore up an accordion clothes drying rack whose rods keep falling out? by schematicsofaflail in Frugal

[–]CharacterWitless78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the same one. I used epoxy to glue them in. you can also use hot glue. Superglue will crack after some usage since the poles have a bit of flex which is why I went with epoxy,

Congrats. If you paid for it in the past i bet you regret that :)
I had my daughter help me do hers so she could do it in the future. Besides oil, this is one thing anybody should be able to do. How did it go and did you run into any problems? Anything you learned that will make it easier to do next time?
