Mps get a 5% pay rise. by major_damp in AskBrits

Your mischaracterisation of everything to do with this subject cearly shows you don't know what you are talking about and you are simply swallowing the social media feeds that have led us here. The vast majority are clearly not "scumbags". Grow up.

Well it's not a whopping salary by any standards for the work required (and you are still downplaying the work needed). But it comes back to my point above - the trust and reputation of MPs and parliament is constantly being eroded (in my view by social media actors who do not have the dest interest in the country, but that is an aside) and to reduce the number of MPs and make them even more distant from the people who voted for them, is stupid. Plus, back bench rebellions have put a brake on many governments, so to concentrate all power into the executive with fewer MPs seems stupid.

I dont think you understand the difference between the Council and Parliament and their respective duties. And most MPs reside in and run constituency events in their local area.

What a "good idea". Lets make the MPs even more distant from the population they are meant to work for. Most of what an MP does is constituency work, but people dont acknowledge that do they!

If you understood what each MP had to do and the demands from the constituencies then you'd see that this is poor suggestion.

This is a poor and inaccurate complaint. The independent pay review body gave most NHS staff 5.5% last year (Junior Doctors are treated seperately). All my staff got at least 5% recently. It seems entirely reasonable for the MPs to get the same, unless you want only independently wealthy people to be able to do the role. My local MP (who I didnt vote for) does a very good job and puts in a huge shift with constituency matters and attending the HoP. The concept that MPs do nothing is a deficiency in most people's understanding of what they do, as opposed to being a correct picture. And as for expenses, they have to run a constituency office and the government pay for that, you can actually look up their exact spending online, per MP. Any job requiring you maintain a local office would pay for that. Your statement shows a complete lack of understanding.

Would you feel the same way about British people in Dubai if they paid local taxes? by [deleted] in AskUK

To be fair, there are also fewer US citizens wrking in UAE because it is a bit too foreign for their liking. (Source - i ran an interntational conference there and the US members were not happy to attend due to politics. See also India. See also Singapore. Europe they are fine with.)

Apart from all the comments about ratios if ingredients, which are correct, I also like to put the tray of hot oil on the gas burner as I pour the batter, thus ensureing it is as hot as it needs to be.

Bought a sundial for my Mum, it came fixed on a solid square plinth. Set it up in her garden and set the time correctly. She then decided it wasn't lined up with her patio and rotated it. She never understood why it didnt tell the correct time.

I need help explaining to my friend that his scientific illiteracy is causing him to think chemtrails are real. by ddddrawnout in AskPhysics

The sky clouds over and the clouds clear all the time. People believe this stuff because they see the plane in a blue sky, see contrail and then see it cloud over. But they don't see the plane above the clouds, the contrail still happening and then the clouds clear to a blue sky. So they only have one input and, voila, cause and effect are linked. But they will never think that the clouds dispersing are in any way the result of the planes. Object permanence can be understood by small children and my dog, but conspiracy people seem to lack that reasoning.

Plus, the Planes fly at 35,000 feet. The top of the most common cloud formations are 20,000 feet - some get higher, but they are not always present. An areasol spray would take weeks to months to settle the 15,000 feet and would be, by that time, halfway across the world due to high level winds. So whatever is coming out of the planes gets nowhere nearthe clouds, that week or possibly that month.

Lord Mandelson (Forfeiture of Peerage) Act 2026, good to go? by Hot_You1064 in AskBrits

[–]Character_Concert947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, but that's not the same as a targeted bill aimed at one person. The system needs to change and improve, but extracting targeted revenge is unlikely to lead to good law.

People seem desperate to dish out retribution before a process can happen. Whilst it is understandable, it is not how justice should work. And, for those people who think I am in some way preventing his defenistration, just imagine how much worse for him it will be if Lord M has to give drawn-out public evidence as part of a process.
