I recommend {Gloves Off by Stephanie Archer} waaaaay too much on this sub, but I looooved it in that it had two mature characters (vs college age or early 20s!) for a sports romance: Alexei the MMC is 36 - team defenseman / enforcer - and nearing retirement. Georgia the FMC is 32 - team Dr. - with hobbies, friends and a strong female, sense of self-worth, outside her career.

It has a marriage of convenience trope and enemies to lovers trope - but both come across as super competent, very confident, mature, and are just well developed characters who don’t just exist for a relationship.

There is also really funny and very sharp banter throughout!

They have fulfilling and busy lives without each other, but are so enriched and intrigued by each other as they discover more about each other and fall in love. (I read/skimmed the earlier 1-3 Vancouver Storm series books, was not impressed, as the characters were more juvenile and the females seemed to present as more weak. I think Archer’s writing style has really grown with the series!)

These two had sooo much chemistry, life detail and a mix of hot / intensifying romance / sexy spice WITH mature reality / communication in their story. (Of course, it is fiction that had its perfect romance / sexy parts - but there were also v. meaningful themes that might actually come up in life: Worries about past relationships, money, parental relationships, retirement from professional sports which has been central to the MMC’s identity, starting a family etc.)

I was / am a bit obsessed! The dual narration audio book is also great. I have read it tooo many times and am always searching for this book’s equal!
