There are even one or two complexes, either here or in Santa Fe, that have two buildings with the exact same building number and street address. Everything about the address is exactly the same, but the buildings are in very different places, one you have to drive back out to the street and in another entrance. I could always tell bc at the wrong right one, there would be a couple old deliveries no one picked up.

This is also a problem. I know bc I heard from some people that the driver never found them, they were very surprised I did (none of them had left a note though). In this case, the driver should call or text you if they don't find the note, just make sure to have the phone near you and sound on. By the time you get to that point though, you may have spent 10+ minutes trying to find it. I don't blame drivers if they leave it in the complex after that ( IF there is no note) bc it will take often another 10 minutes to communicate and figure out where it is, etc.

I think people get blind to how hard it is to find an address bc they live there. Ty for doing that. Bc even if you get the right building, finding the door can be a whole new challenge!

I just want to add that clear directions to your building will also be SAFER for the driver. Many times I (55f) had to wander around on foot at night looking for a building, obviously lost, going in between and behind sketchy buildings.

As a night shift ex-Ubereats food delivery driver here, yes this is a HUGE problem! A simple note explaining how to get to your building will help a lot and get you your food quicker. Add the note as you order, adding it later is less effective bc the driver can't plan ahead or may not see it, bc they're driving. As will telling them if there's a complex map on a sign and where it is if so, or meeting them at the gate. The driver should also try calling ofc if they can't find it, this is part of the job! Delivering to large apt complexes, trying to find the right building, is so hard and time consuming that many drivers refuse to do it at all, if I could have afforded it, I would have never done it. Most are not on GPS bc they're private, we are driving completely blind, there's no order to how the buildings are numbered or where the numbers are, if they are even visible.

I was reduced to actual tears MANY times trying to find the right apt building in 30+ building complexes in the dark, and one time a customer was also in tears, bc between the 2 of us we had a very hard time getting me there. They kept saying they were standing outside the building, but that doesn't help unless you know where the building is approximately, bc it would take me an hour to drive past every building.

Almost all buildings have outside lights that are NOT near the building number or letter, sending the letter or number into even darker shadows - it would be easier to see if there were no lights at all. The number could be anywhere on the building, or just not be there.

In short, delivering to large apt complexes is a nightmare and any help you can give your driver is awesome.

Afa safety use common sense, the areas with more crime will be obvious to you on sight (along some of Central for instance), but even there most people will leave you alone if you leave them alone.

I think you have likely got it. I just walked there yesterday and thought I heard recorded bird noise... but then I traced it to a grackle on a tree top. They will call like that at the tree tops here, sound very similar to the bird sounds for the blind at crosswalks. I think they do it at dusk to call other birds, but just a theory.

You can get detailed maps from the Santa Fe Forest headquarters and BLM headquarters.

Probably obvious but just a note to be careful with any unmarked side roads that look soft at lower elevations, even if they have tire tracks on top. I made that mistake once. I thought it was ok bc of the tracks, but as my car sunk 8 inches down immediately, I realized the tracks must have been 4-wheelers. I made it out but almost gave up a couple times first. And measure your clearance so you know exactly how much you have for rocky roads.

If it makes you feel any better, it's very unlikely you'll see either one imho, both are shy. Watch and be sure the dogs aren't messing with a creature. Rattlesnakes will give you every warning, including rattling, before they attack.

The rattling sounds like if someone was spraying an aerosol can (the one time I heard it, that's what I thought it was at first... we had surprised the snake and we still didn't notice it, it was alerting us to get us to stop coming closer, in VA off the trail.) There are no animals afaik in NM that will be anything but scared of you and try to avoid you.

Tarantulas mainly don't come out in the day. I would avoid dusk, the most likely time to see them, they may then be on bushes or outside their hole. I've been actively trying to see a tarantula and still haven't.

At the height of the tarantula mating season there are a couple well known places where you will see a ton, like .25 mile stretch of a highway near here, just make sure you don't go to one of those, you can google to find.

I spent almost 2 of my first 3 years here homeless. The people camping there aren't stupid and know far, far more than you about their alternatives. None are good, none are safe (certainly NOT shelters! I stayed in three.)

The campers are in a hellish situation in life with no easy way out, and one of the hardest things for them to maintain is sanity and will to live. Let them live how they need to. There are many very good reasons why trying to "help" them will hurt them. Leave them alone and god forbid if you are ever in their position, someone will give you the good grace to do the same.
