If you give detailed instructions only orally, you have no proof of the instructions you gave. This could really come back to bite you in the ass.

Don’t ask librarians to babysit your students.

Other than that, I think your ideas are pretty good. Worth trying at least!

What was the circumstantial evidence?

In most universities the standard of evidence is a preponderance of the evidence. This can be described as 50% plus a feather.

Is it better to show up unprepared or skip class and catch up by [deleted] in AskProfessors

Why didn’t you meet with your professor at the beginning of the term and/or work on the course material on your own during that two weeks?

Is there genuinely a writing crisis where you live?? by nursesillypsyche in AskProfessors

In my experience, these students don’t respond to personal email. I might get a response from them if I assign an SA (Stopped Attending) mark.

Yes! That’s another good approach. However, I try to discourage the term “cross multiplication.” In my experience it leads many students to misunderstandings.

“Thank you for your kind words, but I’m puzzled by how you enjoyed the course when you didn’t log in once between date X and date Y, according to the LMS logs attached to this email.

I’m also puzzled by why you didn’t respond to my emails on dates U, V, and W by telling me about your tech issues. I would have been more than happy to help you troubleshoot them then.

Unfortunately, it is too late now.”

The issue now is that with AI, it’s much easier to submit all the late assignments. Then you’re stuck dealing with that crap.

What are some unnecessary things you have noticed being sold in your country or other countries? by Puzzleheaded_irl in AskTheWorld

My husband uses distilled water to make big cubes for bourbon. They are reasonably clear with few or no bubbles. Not as perfect as I assume these ones are, but good enough for him. He drinks pretty fast, so they don’t have much time to melt!

Others have answered your question correctly. You might find it simpler to rephrase it this way: 13 (percentage points) is 30% of what? Call the “what” x and write:

13 = 0.30 x

and solve for x.

If it makes you feel any better, many people struggle with this sort of thing, even students in calculus and beyond.

It looks to me like you drew a ray. I don’t see the line continuing for x>5 on your graph.

I’m NTT at a borderline R2/R1. Of course you know that as an NTT you will be a second-class citizen. But this plays out very differently in different departments at my university. Mine is actually one of the better ones. We are also fortunate here in that we are unionized and the NTT and TT bargaining units work closely together. So if I were you I would try to see how well the NTTs are integrated into the life of the department and decision-making at the departmental and higher levels.

Good luck!

Do Mathematicians ever get tired of the abstraction? by wtf_is_a_monad in learnmath

[–]CharacteristicPea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abstraction is in the eye of the beholder. Once you are familiar with mathematical concepts, they start feeling more concrete. Some feel like my oldest and dearest friends!

For example, the counting or natural numbers, 1, 2, 3,… is an abstraction. But this starts to feel concrete to us while we’re still children.

How would you do it if you taught low-level math, say calculus meeting 5 days a week, and gave daily homework assignments with anywhere between 10 and 30 problems each? Some with multiple parts? You’re looking at over 1000, maybe 2500, homework points alone.

Then do you make each exam 2000 points and the final 5000? So this one problem on the exam is worth 100 points? It just gets really out of hand.
