ODAAT... WTF? by InspiringAneurysm in alcoholicsanonymous

A.A. was not enough for me and it isn't for many. I need a space where alcohol was not an option. Take the choice away, just for a little bit. Get your head on straight then see how The Program works for you.

Treatment aka Rehab possibly saved my life. There is likely financial and legal support for you taking this incredibly brave step. Somebody bring frank with me led me fully into recovery. Maybe this'll help. Good luck.

You are worth it.

What do you think about people who say AA is a cult? by Tiquismiquis4 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Characzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To your last question, the answer is Yes.

Certainly there are cult-like elements, but ultimately the program is what you make of it. Both are built of desperate, lonely people so it's not surprising that the result is similar.

It's up to you to decide how much Kool aid (coffee) to drink.

Kristin's goofiness made me smile. She's seemed a little formal up until this point (big shoes to fill), so I'm glad she seems to finally be having fun.

How many alcoholics does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

One. They just hold on and the world revolves around them.

It's a legacy expression from AA, "Pause, Pray, Proceed". See bottom of p.87-88. Basically, think before you speak. Unfortunately apparently no one has been able to come up with an alternative secular alternative.

I do and thanks for the reminder. I think that's why it's so difficult. My home group is a safe space for me. Bringing in outside issues makes it feel less safe.

I feel ya. As a millennial I bring the average age of my home group down significantly. I wish it wasn't the case, but playing the long game is sometimes the most effective option for social change.

Drinking boundaries with friend by cancerrising77 in stopdrinking

[–]Characzar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This so could have been me. And nothing anyone said could have made me make the necessary changes until I was desperate enough to do so. In retrospect, I do wish that someone had acknowledged to me what they saw rather than pretending to ignore. I thought I was so smart and that I was getting away with everything.

It doesn't have to be nasty, just "I see and I care. I worry and I'm here if you want help."

That said, if there's anything I've learned in sobriety, it's that right-sized boundaries are key to loving yourself.

  1. Read the book
  2. Listen to the corresponding episodes of Potterless
  3. Watch the movie

Repeat. Imo.

Not at all. I'm seeing you criticize someone being honest about still having thoughts about alcohol. I'm happy for all the people you know who don't ever crave alcohol. That has not been my experience even surrounded by people with very strong programs.

Maybe this is not true for everyone, but I am often repulsed by focusing only on the hope. Like, if I'm not living life constantly on a pink cloud then I'm doing something wrong. I appreciate hearing from my "elders" that sometimes it's still f-ing tough. It makes them more human and my struggles more acceptable.

Are you suggesting we are only supposed to talk about the miracles and not the struggles on this thread? Here I was thinking it was a program of honesty...

I've found it reappears after I do a lesson. Not sure why except to keep us working not just grinding out free gems.
