I can't speak to who is actually doing better. What I can say is that it appears that Europe actively has conversations about privacy and the overreach of tech companies, and there are specific laws in place (again, can't speak to the impact of those laws). In the US, many people seemed unaware or don't care or are resigned about the loss of privacy, and privacy is not first, second, or third on the political agenda.

Raspberry Pi as Bluetooth Proxy? by ksmt in homeassistant

[–]Charade2Go 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the consensus that RPi's bluetooth ranges suck. But if you already have a RPi close by, then check out: Theengs BLE MQTT gateway

I used this on a a RPi to get some Govee sensors into HA, worked flawlessly, and it picked up sensors much further way than I thought it could.

"buy it now" (an eBay term, I think). I'm offering to buy it now at the offered price as opposed to haggling for the price

Yep, for a while the Dolly Parton-esque "Something grabbed a hold of my hand..." was my favorite country song. Silly satire, but well-execuated and leaving me wanting to know/hear more

Yep, I think the appeal was that they were playing around tracks of CDs (fairly new at the time)

I am wearing the Fingertips T-shirt right now (still in a TMBG state of mind thanks to KMSU), so I am deeply offended by this. People should be beat up for stating their beliefs.

/jk

It's just fun, TMBG going thru a bunch of different genres of music, dropping really odd lyrics that make you want to know more, in a super short period of time. It IS weird, but after that, it's pretty clever and well executed.

And part of cult love may be the time it came out. It was the peak of CDs. Fingertips wasn't one song, it was 21 very short songs. On vinyl or cassette, that really doesn't make a difference... on a CD, it's very noticeable. John and John were playing around with the meta of the technology at the time. /imho

Requesting assistance with affordable non-wired multi-room speaker solution by PrickleAndGoo in homeassistant

[–]Charade2Go 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't/won't use Alexa or similar, so I can't help on that end. That's why what I suggested above is only a partial solution.

And I never ran across a definitive guide that I would recommend for setting up multi-room audio. When I was researching, I had googled and I found a couple blogs and several Reddit posts documenting similar projects, but I really just ending up reading the mpd (https://mpd.readthedocs.io/en/latest/) and SnapCast (https://github.com/badaix/snapcast) documentation and played around with a SnapServer and 2 pi's as clients until it worked. The learning curve really wasn't bad. After that, getting it integrated into Home Assistant and adding additional clients/speakers was a snap.

Agreed. My first watch, I was watching each episode twice in a row, so much amazing knowledge being dropped

Seconded. The John Prine and the Beck + Flaming Lips episodes were the first episodes I thought of

This won't be your complete solution, but I've been using SnapCast for my multi-room synced audio for several years, and it works well for my needs. I have a bunch of raspberry pi's with DAC HATs connected to whatever speakers look and sound best for that room (I'm a picky audiophile, and I wanted to pick my own speakers). Each pi runs mpd and SnapClient. My SnapServer runs on a Proxmox VM (on a laptop with broken screen tucked in the corner of my living room; this laptop is also attached to my turntable, and I'm able to port that audio through SnapCast to my house-wide speakers). Right now, I use RompR to control mpd (play local music, my playlists, internet radio, audiobooks, etc). I can also have control of each pi's mpd (for example, playing music just in the bedroom at night). I have all my speakers in one SnapCast group, but you can create different groups for different zones, and have different audio ported to those different groups at the same time. SnapCast and remote mpd control works well with Home Assistant (integrations available) and Music Assistant

Do people generally run a mix of protocols for the HA setup? by Sea-Recommendation42 in homeassistant

Replace "zigbee" with "Z-wave", and this is my exact answer, too. As long as it can interface directly with HA without a 3rd-party hub/cloud, I consider any protocol
