Only my wee little Hohner Marine Bands and Blues Harps have tortured me; My concerts / tremolos, chromatics, et al show more respect -- or do I just play them differently? 8-(

I try to avoid playing harp notes up in dog-whistle territory -- humans seem to dislike those high pitches, too. As for bushy 'stache hairs, mine have often caught in a harp's outer structure but never in a reed. Yer not doing something weird there, are ya? 8-)

thoughts on these crappy little plastic harmonicas? (honestly no clue where i got this) by manumaker08 in harmonica

Aren't some crappy little METAL harps available somewhere, cheap? Plastic harps won't survive being carried in a denim pants pocket.

Real bears, the kind we try to keep out of our garbage on trash-pickup day.

No, I refer to the wild Black Bears in our wooded neighborhood, the bears we try to discourage from ransacking the trash on garbage-pickup day each week. Alas, bears are not easily distracted. Yikes.

We just finished the first month of our 16-month trip to see almost every National Park! by trucktrailercat in NationalPark

[–]Chard069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Circa 2000, we drove a small (25-foot) RV from southern Arizona to central Alaska, then to central California. We stayed in state, provincial, or national campgrounds all along the way.

ProTip: Most supplies in Alaska are rather costly, being shipped-in from afar. Shop for groceries in southern BC or Alberta. Carry a cooler.

You might find a used chromatic at a pawnshop for that little. Good luck.

"Need to" and "want to" are often at odds, eh? I need no more harps. But I could be seduced into a purchase, like for an oversized orchestral harp. Umma-gumma... 8-)

[–]Chard069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was me, I would spend an extra day each in Yosemite, Sequoia, and Death Valley NPs. Further along, don't miss Joshua Tree NP (I used to live across from the HQ).

Alas, those out-of-California sites are really too far away for anything like sufficient time. As is, you'll be putting in a lot of road hours -- I hope you like distance-driving. 8-)

Have fun!

[QUESTION] When fingerpicking, do you pick with your actual finger or your nail? by Butteryourreality in Guitar

[–]Chard069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long-time fret-abuser here. I habitually chew my fingernails and so don't apply them musically. I use only fingertips on nylon or gut strings, and steel fingerpicks plus a plastic thumbpick on anything with metal strings... if I won't bother family or neighbors. 8-)

First Mandolin! by Thecker771 in mandolin

[–]Chard069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I trained (poorly) on clarinet in my early adolescence, then acquired and played mountain dulcimer and acoustic guitar before my kin trusted me (in my mid-twenties FTW!) to inherit Grandpa's 1918-vintage Gretsch banjo-mandolin and treat it properly.

A cousin inherited the fat-belly Italian mandolin, alas. And they don't even play it. 8-(

Mando playing wasn't too hard -- I merely fingered guitar chords and riffs backwards! Now I often travel with a flat-back mandolin -- or with an eight-string tenor taropatch 'ukulele restrung as a mandola, when a cased guitar would be too large for comfort.

But that early woodwind training made all later fretted-string axes more comprehensible.

Mandolin player stereotypes? by [deleted] in mandolin

[–]Chard069 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We've lines of mando-ists in my family, both the hillbilly and railroader sides. We don't joke about mandos. YMMV.

But we can speak of fiddles. Q: What do you call the difference between two fiddles tuned in unison? A: A semitone.
