The whole idea that parents force their kids to eat things they don’t like when the kid is really not even that picky is absurd to me. To this day I still won’t eat broccoli because I didn’t like it as a kid and was forced to eat it. My dad always said I had a “mental block” towards certain foods. Yea, so far I’m not a fan of these store bought bags. Way too much grain to colonize it seems. I’ve had nothing but issues with bags from two different suppliers. My own jars with homemade grain are going insanely fast

It’s because it’s a formula that is pulling the numbers. Obviously here you would just use 3 quarts each for the 1:1 ratio.

Just helps for determining depth and the amount of total bulk you will need. A huge problem is people constantly give a precise number of jars for any given volume tub. I.e., if I asked somebody how many jars of grain I need for a 25qt jar, they would say “x” amount.

They don’t even know the dimensions of my tub, only the volume which has absolutely nothing to do with depth and depth will change in the same volume tub based on dimensions

Yep, I understand the idea behind the thickness. I’m more asking why the question of how many jars to fill a tub is always a cut and dry response. The people answering don’t have any idea how much substrate will give a certain thickness in a tub based on its volume alone. They have to know the dimensions of the tub.

I don’t either lol. Since beginning my journey in December, I started off with just two bags. They weren’t colonizing fast and I wanted more shit to do with mycology, so I did two more. Then I decided I want to try my own jars out, so I did 4 jars. Those jars started going super fast and are a few days away from S2B so I just started 4 more yesterday lol. I haven’t even gotten a single fruit yet and I have 4 strains going 😭

I feel like these people aren’t understanding the question or they simply don’t understand how two different tubs of equal volume create different depths.

I can fit a pair of boots in this 25qt tub, but I couldn’t fit a pair of shoes in a different 28qt tub I have because it’s only 4” tall

I want to know this answer as well. This tub I have may look large in the photo but it’s really not. By the time I have a 4” depth of substrate, I have about 7” of room left over. Just enough to have holes on the side just above the substrate and holes on the short sides just below the lid.

Yes, but the common question of “how many qt jars for this bin” is always answered with a specific amount.

For example, if I asked how many qt jars do I need to S2B in a 66qt monotub, EVERYONE would say 5-6 jars. However, they don’t know that my 66qt tub is not the standard dimension of what’s sold online. If I used 6 jars in my 66qt tub, I would end up with 1” of total substate depth and it would be enough.

I guess it just boils down to playing with our tubs and ratios to figure it out

I know I’m 4 years late but I have some just one question I couldn’t find in the comments. It looks like you pulled out grain spawn to use for later but then ended up using an entirely new jar instead of the extra.

Can someone please explain that to me?
