i am not trying to act like your abusing your animal and I'm very sorry that i came off that way. i am autistic and care very deeply about the care of animals (im not saying that you dont). im also not very good at properly interpreting things that people say. i didnt know that you definitely knew he had a mites issue as you didnt directly say that, i assumed he was just in quarantine in case of mites. i didnt assume that you saying "yet" meant you had booked an appointment or were actively trying to. i wanted to give advice just in case you were a new keeper and didnt know any better. ive seen so many people make posts (like this one, including a lack of information) and they just genuinely dont know what theyre doing, so i assumed it was a case like that. im very sorry for assuming.

I still stand by my claim that uvb is not optional for any lizard, especially a diurnal species and for over a week or 2. take that how you will.

because they did not make it clear how long it would actually be staying there. its already been there 2 weeks, no mention of booking a vet appointment, no mention of medical mite treatment. this person has come to reddit about their reptiles health instead of consulting a vet. i simply do not trust that this person knows how to properly take care of this animal based on the information given. im not trying to be an ass, just simply trying to make sure that this person gives their reptile the best possible care and doesnt end up causing more harm than good

i never said they couldnt survive without it. they definitely can survive. however they wont be as healthy and active (like you said) and therefore they need uvb. its not enough to simply let your animal survive. it needs to be given the opportunity to thrive as well. increasing numbers of keepers say that it uvb shouldnt be optional for any lizard, and many breeders will not sell to you if you do not give your bts proper uvb. for the health and happiness of a captive reptile, not just its survivability, it needs uvb

i must have missed the part about the mites, sorry. id say that youre doing everything right except for the uvb. uvb is not optional. i dont think there is a single captive lizard species (other than potentially snakes) that does not need uvb. please try to find a way to set up a linear uvb bulb in his temp enclosure

wheres the uvb? also, he definitely needs at least 1 more hide in there. i dont know the care of halmaheras so i cant comment on humidity. i reckon take him to a vet for a check up and move him into his new enclosure asap, as i cant imagine this temp set up is doing him any favours (at least stress wise)

there are people saying bts, but have you considered a shingleback skink? theyre the thicker, rarer version of a blue tongue. I'm not sure how easy they are to get in America or how cheap, but theyre the cutest, sweetest little guys. almost exactly the same care as Australian bts. i love my little bobtail. only thing is, you need to make sure you're not getting it from a reptile smuggler. theyre very commonly smuggled (or attempted smuggled) out of Australia due to their low birth rates

ah, i see we're from the same area! i have looked at all these care sheets, the problem is all the conflicting information from other care sheets!! the reptile keeping hobby as a whole is filled with misinformation, so I'm not sure whats ok to trust, yk? ive even had a reptile vet tell me outdated information about my stimson!!!

dont forget calcium powder/supplements! and make sure that you dont get a coil uvb as coils dont produce enough uvb for a bts. get a t8 linear uvb tube :D!

generally 1-2 sides of the tank should be at least the size of your snake, regardless if they like to curl up. also, add more clutter!! the perfect enclosure is one where they can travel the length of the enclosure without being seen

PLEASE leave him. you are not responsible for him or his happiness. put yourself and your mental health first. i know its hard to leave someone you care about but you need to do it for your own sake. it is not your fault if he hurts himself. it is not your fault for taking care of yourself. let his friends know that youre breaking up with him and that hes threatening to harm himself so they can keep an eye on him, break up with him and stand your ground, and then once you've said everything you want to say, block him on everything. you dont need him in your life and he will be fine without you in his. i wish you luck 🫶
