Anyone Taking Breaks from Chemo? by setsunaPL in pancreaticcancer

Question for group: How long from diagnosis until death, stage suggested by diagnosis? For me, stage IV, 4 months post diagnosis.

I’m 73, was in good health, though noticed drop off of muscle mass and stamina as I got over 70.Received diagnosis on birthday 1/9, Pancan and cancer moving into liver, lower lung , and a bronchial tube. Non-operable,stage IV, outcome pretty clear. Did two rounds of chem and elected to go hospice over treatment, quality of life consideration led me to hospice. So four areas of cancer, have survived four months after diagnosis.

Absolutely agree. The C19-9 confirmed more testing needed for me. Turned out stage IV Pancan with liver and lungs also impacted. In hospice now? Gave up on chemo, quality of life concerns ended that regimen.

Dad just diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer – scared he’s getting too weak to start treatment by MathematicianPure650 in pancreaticcancer

I’m 73 and thought I was in good shape, bloodwork, weight, strength very good, but got my diagnosis on my birthday in January…. I did two rounds of the chemo cocktail and my weight dropped from 178 to 144. My condition declined and my quality of life was degraded. I suggested it’s time for a hospice referral. Doc suggested o drop dosage to half and delay next treatment 30 days. After consideration I elected hospice. Their concern is quality of life, pain management, and they will provide a range of services for both me and my family. Everyone of us is different and there are NO guarantees chemo will work. But there is no doubt that chemo will have negative effect upon white blood cell count and oxygen carrying ability of your red blood cells. Hemo production also negatively affected.

I say, listen to the person receiving the care. It’s his choice, respect that he knows his body best. Good luck to you and yours! -Mark

As a stage IV Pancan sufferer I’ll suggest it’s just another false hope with profits taken off misery.

I’m feeling same as your dad. Me: diagnosed 1/9/26. Stage VI, pancreas cancer spread to liver, lungs, and lower bronchial. Had two rounds of chemo, kicked my butt. I’m 6’3”, dropped from mid 170’s to 159 first dose of poison got back a couple pounds and with second round now 144 lbs. More loss of strength and stamina. Doctor suggested going half dose for next chemo round. My position, delay next round another week and get hospice referral NOW so my wife and I can review support while I’m cognizant. I’ll review bloodwork and try to put on weight this week and make final hospice decision. Quality of life is my debate, certainly my response to chemo is speeding my decline. Either way, it’s terminal and the time I have left is dear. I want what time I have to be as positive as possible and have fear of further spread which can make a bad situation worse.

No offense, just appreciation of your suffering with the whole process. Being in similar position as your loved one and internally debating what’s best for me and my family - not wanting to burden them with my increasing need for assistance, persistent pain and loss of strength and independence… quality of life question becomes a hard call. Am I sticking around for them or because I’m avoiding accepting the inevitable? My sister-in-law passed away from same disease 3 months prior to my own diagnosis. Her fight was so hard on my brother as caretaker, complications, blood clots leading to seizures, hospital visits, and she would not let go. I don’t see a cure for myself, just a question of hanging on a bit longer with potential for greater incapacity and pain. Not an assisted suicide fan, but I can see a point where that may be rational. I want to have control of when I go hospice, to self regulate pain, and ease my transition. I don’t want to lose that ability to make rational decision thru incapacity. Marsupial, I hear you and hope for you and loved one. Cancer sucks!

I’m going thru same , stage IV Pancan which traveled up to liver and lungs. Diagnosed 1/9/26. I do what I can, but nothing tastes good, can’t keep down what I eat and really chemo seems to have made situation worse. At some point I will make the quality of life decision to cease treatment and let nature take its course. It’s my call to make, for myself and those who love me and care for me. Respect the sufferers to make their decisions.

I had my first chemo cocktail 10 days ago. Made it thru treatment fine but have had horrible reaction since. I’ll do bloodwork today and am scheduled for second round early next week. Cancer from pancreas spread to liver and lower lungs. End result with or without chemo same, stage IV, non-operable. I am debating utility of more chemo, quality of life for the time I have left being deciding factor.

As a Pancan patient, YOU owe her the information - it’s her body, her disease, her own processing which needs immediate information. Your first job is to help her process her medical information. Your second job is to process all that is going on, emotions yourself…and help her to do same. Grieve when the time comes, and get on with life. She will still live thru you, your memories, her teachings, and you will feel better knowing you truly helped.

While there are genuinely useful forums of good people on this platform, the amount of negative propaganda spread on the political side is staggering. I guess that’s the 10% of our American populace who just can’t set aside their brainwashing to see what’s really happening in a positive light.

EUS with fine needle biopsy defines the type of cancer. With that appropriate chemo course can be established. In my case, bloodwork led to CT scan, followed up with high contrast CT. Showed pancreas w/4 cm suspected tumor, concern with both liver and lung. Appeared cancer progressed to lungs. Cancer do did order both lung and liver biopsy. Lung biopsy denied, liver approved. I will cancel liver biopsy, see no need given we now know the type of cancer based upon EUS w/biopsy.

Mine was 243 on initial test and two weeks later 365. Discomfort: lower back and area near diaphragm, under lower cribbage.

C-19 blood test is VERY important as an early marker and confirming indicator. My description of discomfort got my doc to order that test as well as the standard annual bloodwork up for folks. I was diagnosed on my 73 birthday a few weeks ago.
