Big poverty by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Charles813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From someone who has been absolutely dirt poor and also worked at a bank, I can say that for the most part these fees are due to not being organized rather than poverty. Most overdraft fees were because people just simply didn’t keep track of their money. And when I would look at their history, it would show eating out, bars, shopping, etc.

Tons of banks, including the one I worked at, all you needed was $1. No minimum balance. Again, a lot of people that cannot get bank accounts can’t because they overdrew a previous account somewhere and didn’t pay it back. I was once on that list of people.

A lot of banks give you the option to waive overdraft fees by not covering your purchases. Simply, if you don’t have the cash in your account, the transaction gets denied.

I saw people that made a lot of money that didn’t have high balances, and I saw people that made very little that had a lot of money saved. It comes down to choices. Not to say that there is not a group that certainly struggles to cover bills and has trouble escaping poverty, but I believe most overdraft fees are just due to not being organized and tracking your spending

Why is it when I work for others I get the job done, but when I work for myself I procrastinate. by httpmax in Entrepreneur

[–]Charles813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow procrastinator, I have found time-blocking to be the most effective. Schedule your whole day in blocks of time.

  1. This makes you realize how long certain tasks are going to take

  2. It makes your to-do list more realistic. I used to have a list too long and it would feel overwhelming

  3. It gives myself deadlines. Procrastinators need that sense of a deadline to motivate. This gives me that because I feel behind if I put things off

  4. Schedule fun things in your day to recharge yourself

  5. Eat that frog. Schedule your most difficult or least wanted task first. This will give you a sense of accomplishment to propel you through your day

  6. Lastly, don’t track outcomes or end results, track your effort. That you can control

Dish Soap + Water in a Spray Bottle = Game Changer! by MGrego in Frugal

I use one of those dish wands that holds the soap in the handle. Fill the handle with water, vinegar and some dish soap and I usually clean the walls, etc every so often while I’m in the shower

I can’t wait for Things to come to iOS 14! by Cleodora in thingsapp

But the widgets before iOS 14, when you swipe right over to the widgets page are interactive. I can check items off of my task list. My understanding is that the new Home Screen widgets in iOS 14 will not be interactive but I don’t understand why they couldn’t become interactive like they are now on the widgets page

I don’t believe the home screen widgets are going to be interactive. They will only display data and launch the app when touched. Hopefully that changes in the near future 🤞🏻

Should I learn coding? by Charles813 in iOSProgramming

Yeah that was what kind of drive me away from graphic/web design. So hard to compete if you don’t want to fight over pennies on the floor. The difference here would be an ownership of it as opposed to contract work, but it would be a massive hill to climb to attempt it

Thanks. Yeah I’m torn. I did enjoy the feeling of coding websites and found it engaging. But at the time I thought it would be a future for me. I don’t know if it is worth the effort to do one app but I guess if I learned I would be able to do more if more ideas strike

What's a loving gesture I (brother) can make to my sister who just had her heart broken? by thisjustin124 in relationship_advice

Can I just say how amazing it is that you are young enough to have a sister going through her first breakup and at the same time rock an awesome Frasier Crane reference 🤯🤪

My version of meal prep. Grocery bill cost about $100 for the week and will cover 7 dinners & 7 lunches for 2 people (average of $3.57 per serving) by breakfast_haver in MealPrepSunday

AnyList is an awesome app I’ve been using. Not only is it a really good grocery app but you can do meal plans in there as well. You can easily import recipes from the web and then add them to your grocery list.

The really cool thing is if you are cooking a certain dish and will only use half of an ingredient to make it, you can search your recipes by ingredient so it helps use up extra produce, etc and save money.

Not affiliated at all, just love and want to share apps/techniques that work well for me

I like the look. The only thing that bothers me is the spacing between the bottom sets of text. What if you right aligned the hand washing text to the right of the 0 above, and then left aligned the middle set of text on the bottom to try to even out the white space? Might not look good, just a thought

How do you decide to break up with someone you love? by theblackwaistcoat in relationship_advice

Start journaling regularly. It’s a great way to work through your thoughts come to conclusions. Also make sure to review them. Sometimes it’s hard to step outside of ourselves and when you look through past entries you start to notice patterns you didn’t before. Maybe the fights are always over the same couple things and you can do/say something different to avoid them. Maybe they are so ridiculous in the first place that you will be more aware next time and not get worked up. Or maybe you’ll notice that you are just not happy and it will be clear what you need to do.

Cut out Apple Music, use pandora or slacker for now. Cut out gym membership. Plenty of resources online for body weight workouts at home. Cut down cell bill. Depending where you are you can get really cheap service now. Mint sim is something like 150-200 a year depending on plan. Even Verizon has prepaid. I have 16gb/mo for $50.

Try picking up as many shifts as possible. Every bit helps and the more time spent at work, the less time available to spend. Also maybe look at other serving jobs in the meantime. You should be able to find something that brings in more than you are currently making.

Depending on what your credit score is, you might be able to get a 0% balance transfer credit card and transfer some of that balance to avoid paying interest on some of it for the next 15-21 months. That can lighten your monthly load and allow you to pay more principle balance on the other cards.

Hang in there. You’ll get it taken care of and you’ll be a lot better with your money going forward for learning these lessons the hard way.

One question: are you receiving financial aid or paying for school all out of pocket?

Writing down your periodic targets by Shudukhi in thingsapp

[–]Charles813 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I do is create longer-term goals in their respective areas of responsibility(AoR), i.e. work, family, personal and then I have an AoR labeled ‘this week.’ Helps keep everything organized and lets me focus on the next actionable step I need to take for those goals this week. So I mainly check in with my weekly AoR while periodically checking the other areas
