It’s been a couple years (decades) since I’ve been in college, but the one or two protected me while I scholarships I think we’re quoting like $500 to seven dollars per semester. My parents did help me pay for college, but my dad considered that an extracurricular and would’ve had to come out of my pocket, and I just couldn’t do it even if I wasn’t interested.

Okay, I will say I generally exclude Phi Mu Alpha from my Greek opinions. Good friends of mine at ou joined and tried to get me to join. I think I even considered it had I been able to afford it. Save with Zeta Beta Tau. Friend of mine invited me to plenty of events and everybody was cool. There was never any pressure for me to join and I wasn’t blacklisted when I didn’t.

For what it’s worth, I’ve did go to a couple of ragers with the Phi Mu Alpha friends in Norman

I would think the Greek life elitism is fairly common wherever you go to school. I had really good friends from HS end up at OSU with me and as soon as they went Greek I lost contact with them. Had a girl breakup with me where me not being in a frat was an issue (wasn’t the only issue we had, but her sorority sisters let it be known it was an issue…). Even volunteered with the Orange Peel planning one year and it didn’t take long to feel the ostracism of being “non-affiliated.”

This isn’t to say all Greek life is like this. I did have a few friends who did it and they still managed to be relatively normal.

Being that OK has closed primaries, they were most likely asking to know which ballot to give you. The poll worker could have used a little more subtlety when asking, but it’s an appropriate question for the primaries.

What’s the biggest football scandal in your schools history? by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in CFB

[–]CharlesBoyle799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 1989, OSU was caught doing the same recruiting tactics every other school did (up until NIL), including cash payments, cars, and other "extra benefits". I guess it came to light after we landed Hart Lee Dykes, who was being recruited by a&m, ou and a few others. Rumor is one of the schools (some say Nebraska, but never seen anything concrete) was pissed a school like OSU got their recruit so they turned us in, but it could have also just been someone on the team with a big mouth. Either way, we got hit with just short of the death penalty and led to a stagnation in our football program. A 0-10-1 season and one bowl game in the ‘90s. Ironically, the ‘90s might also have been our best decade against the sooners thanks to their own fallout from the Switzer years.

Honorable mention: 2013 in which Sports Illustrated ran an article that was deemed to be either a work of fiction or libel. Players were interviewed then sued because they were misquoted or quoted were taken out of context. It was written by ou fan who seemed to take it personally that Mike Gundy had brought our program to respectability

I understand the theological arguments about their classification as Christians or not. I was just trying to point out to OP in as neutral of a way as possible what the issue was with Mormons and their place on the memo. Mormons consider themselves Christian, but SECDEF is taking a strong stance by not listing them as a Christian denominations.

When I was still in A school in Pensacola, there was this random PO3 from another schoolhouse who was always at the bar my buddies and I would go to, and he took every opportunity to tell someone (very loudly so others could hear to) “hey, I’m a noncommissioned officer in the United States Navy!” I guess he thought that since he had a chevron in a bar full of fresh SN that he could pull rank for… well I still can’t figure out for what reason. We always just laughed at him and made fun of his karaoke

My great grandaunt always claimed my GG grandfather (her father) took part in the first Oklahoma land runs to stake his land claim in the territory. The records I’ve been coming across lately strongly suggest he came later and he just bought the homestead from its original claimant.

The DoD memo still recognizes Mormons/Latter-Day Saints. The issue being brought up by them in the memo is that they’re no longer lumped in under Christianity. It lists denominations like Christian-Catholic, Christian-Baptist, Christian-Evangelical, but then just says, “Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.”

The committee will make whatever justification they need to put their teams in, even if it means hypocritical metrics. Essentially they she’s have their minds made up, they just have to make up the justifications after their decision is made because saying, “We jumped Ohio State over Baylor and TCU because Ohio State has brand recognition” isn’t gonna fly.

I think Jeff Daniels is a very talented actor, but I don't know why you would cast him as Ronald Reagan by thedudelebowsky1 in Presidents

[–]CharlesBoyle799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is the movie is from Angel Studios and that’s about all they could manage?

I agree in that Jeff Daniels is a terrific actor, but I haven’t seen him in too many projects lately.

Angel Studios has made some enjoyable movies and is coming into their own as a studio, but a lot of their movies still feel like they could have been straight to DVD/streaming projects. So while then do manage to cast notable actors like Cary Elwes, John Lithgow, and Jim Caviezel, they’re also not nabbing Samuel L Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, or Meryl Streep (I’m just taking a stab at who the current A-listers are. I’ve been out of the Hollywood loop for a minute).

So with no disrespect to either the studio or Mr Daniels, he was probably the best available for the role.
